Centre for Faith and Media Mourns the Loss of Parminder Singh

May 10, 2004

Calgary, AB: The tragic and untimely death of Parminder Singh will not mean an end to his life’s work of promoting interreligious harmony and helping young Indo-Canadians deal with the pressures of modern society, says Richelle Wiseman, executive director of the Centre for Faith and the Media.

“Parminder Singh was only 27 years old at the time of his death but he had accomplished so much in such a short amount of time that I am convinced his legacy is assured,” she said.

Parminder Singh, founder of the Gurmat Studies Foundation and the Guru Nanak Academy in Surrey, BC, was a strong supporter of the work of the Centre, assisting the production of a guidebook on Sikhism for journalists. “Parminder knew the importance of making sure that Canadian society had a better grasp of Sikhism – and in this way help Sikh youth know their faith was being respected and recognized.”

One of Parminder Singh’s most recent projects was providing the inspiration for Rally for Dignity and Diversity (www.r4d2.ca), an organization lobbying for religious freedom and countering the kind of restrictions on religious clothing imposed by the French government.

The Centre for Faith and the Media is an independent, non-profit organization to inform, advise and help media and the general public achieve a stronger understanding of spiritual history, practic

es and values in Canadian society.

The Centre provides non-partisan resources to journalists and the public to enable a more accurate and fair portrayal of faith in our midst. It conducts research, creates guides and other reference works, and operates an online site to enable broad access to information.
