The Khayal Sirlek is believed by many Sikh Musicologists to be the 1st mention of the Khayal style of singing in Shaastri Sangeet. Modern legends put the claim to fame in the Mughal Darbars, but Sri Dasam Granth Sahib is the first physical evidence of the use of the modern Khayal mode of raag rendition. As stated above it is interesting the sirlek does not have a raag hukum in it like other Shabd Hazare shabds of 10th Master - giving Rababis artistic license - its categorisation under Shabd Hazare clearly shows it was composed to be sung (which it is, heavily).

Sri Sarbloh Grant Sahib also has similar Sirleks with not only Khayal, but 'Dhrupad' singing style as well, providing cross referenced evidence of the above theory. Research into Sri Sarbloh Granth Sahib is being undertaken by a few Gursikhs at present, hopefully, a full analysis will be presented in the near future.
