Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

After last years election results were thrown out in court, another election was held Sunday, November 15, 2009.

With Guru Ji's Kirpa, out of 22,000 votes, the first count was 13,000 for Sikh Youth, and 7,000 for the Cheema Slate

I believe this will help the Sikh community in the Lower Mainland of BC which seemed to be broken apart before this election. Great turnout.

The battle has been won, but the war isn't over. Predictions are that the losing party will 80% chance take this back to the courts. On what statements is unknown. One obstacle in the losing party way. They have to spend there own money if they want an appeal for this election. They were fine using Gurdwara money, but know it's there own, let's see what happens.

Let's wait and see if they turn over the Gurdwara to the Youth party this week.

BC SIKH YOUTH

Writing a New Chapter in Sikh History

Community unites in historic election and elects Sikh Youth Slate at Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Temple

Surrey, BC - On Sunday, November 15, 2009, Sikhs in BC received the answer to the question they have been asking for years, "When will we re-unite?" In what experts are calling a turning point in the history of Sikhs in North America, Bikramjit Singh Sandher and the Sikh Youth slate defeated the incumbent regime in the executive election at Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. In the official results, the Youth Slate received a total of 13, 458 votes, while the incumbent slate received 7, 257 votes. With an almost 2:1 ratio of votes for the youth, the Sikh community has loudly indicated their desire for a positive change.

Large, energized crowds gathered throughout Surrey late Sunday night into Monday morning, letting out a collective sigh of relief when reports circulated that the Youth slate was victorious. As the news sunk in, people from all political backgrounds flooded the Youth campaign office with congratulatory phone calls.

Standing amongst a crowd of supporters, president-elect Bikramjit Singh re-affirmed the message that the community had already conveyed, “The time for change has come. The sangat has spoken loud and clear: they want Gurdwara management that speaks to the real issues our community is facing today. We must all join together to save our children from drugs and gangs, to provide support and equality to women, and to ensure the best services for our seniors. We must renew our mission to serve all of humanity now that we are united.”

A true testament to their dedication, the Youth Slate fought a hard but respectful election campaign. Numerous attempts to engage them in dirty politics were instead met with logic and respect, a philosophy that did not go unnoticed by the community at large. “My mind was set on voting against the Youth slate, until I saw their demeanor and the purity of their message” said one voter, “I realized that I myself needed to rise out of the political rut that I had been stuck in for years and look at the bigger picture”.

The Youth Slate, in an impromptu rally in Surrey on Sunday night, also thanked the hundreds of volunteers who spent countless hours throughout the campaign to help achieve this great moment. “Without the help of the volunteers, we would not be celebrating right now," said Bikramjit Singh. "Know in your heart, that your hard work has helped write a page in history!”

It now remains to be seen whether the outgoing management will give charge of the Gurdwara Sahib to the youth slate or continue to drag out the process in courts as they have done for the last 3 years. In the 2008 election, the Sikh Youth won by over 5,000 votes and was unable to serve due to small technicalities. Despite the delay, and despite the different opposing groups uniting to fight this tide of change, the community gave an even larger margin of victory to the Youth Slate this time around -- a clear call for a new path of peace and unity among Sikhs in BC.

Change has arrived and it is being met with tremendous optimism. For the first time in decades, the Sikh community of Surrey has a Gurdwara that they can call their own: A place where people from all walks of life can gather to worship, learn and serve; a place where political affiliations get left at the door; a place that fosters love and harmony; and a place that everyone can feel welcome.

Congradulations to Canada youth!

You guys also need to take over Dasmesh Darbar committee as well and re-implement PURAATAN ideas.

Is it same dashmesh darbar that was built after they came out of table and chair Gurudwara?

They are pathetic now. They are the one who called Harjinder Dilgeer last wek.

Singh, is Mr. Dilgeer in B.C. now?

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
