While coming back from Baghdad, Guru Nanak Dev jee told Bhai Mardana that he had only few more days to live. Bhai Mardana jee asked Guru Sahib to keep his honour in the next world. When the day for the demise of Bhai Mardana jee arrived, Bhai Mardana jee told Guru Nanak Sahib smilingly that he had onlyu few more moments left now.

Guru Sahib asked him how he knew that. Bhai Mardana jee who was very relaxed, replied saying that with his (Guru Nanak Sahib’s) kirpa, he could see that “uss dee naabhi vich, swaasaan dee gandh khul gayee hai” (the knot of swaas in the navel, had opened up). He further said that he now had only 9 more swaas left.

Exactly after 9 swaas, Bhai Mardana jee left for Sachkhand.

When I read this, I found it very wonderful. There is too much that we have to learn yet. I had no idea that there is a knot of swaas in our naabhi (navel) that has to open up when we die.

If we read the baani of Baba Farid jee, he writes:

JIND NIMAANI KADHEEYE, HADDAAN KOO KADKAAYE||

(The rooh or soul of ordinary people comes out with so much difficulty that it shakes the whole bone structure)

All our life is getting waste in trying to find the secrets of material world and accummulating the vain material things. No university, no college, no school is working on training us for the next world. Are we not totally unprepared for the next world?

Are we prepared to die today and be held accountable for your deeds right away?

Do we have the currency that will work there in the next world?

Do we know the language of the next world?

Do we have any connections there?

If the answer to these questions is “NO”, then we are in big trouble.

Eihu man nihachal hiradhai vaseealae guramukh mool pashhaan rehai ||

When the mind becomes steady and stable, it abides in the heart, and then the Gurmukh realizes the root, the source of all.

Naabh pavan ghar aasan baisai guramukh khojath tattu lehai ||

The breath is seated in the home of the navel; the Gurmukh searches, and finds the essence of reality.

Su sabad nirantar nij ghar aachhai tribhavan jote s sabade lehai ||

This Shabad permeates the nucleus of the self, deep within, in its own home; the Light of this Shabad pervades the three worlds.

khaavai dhookh bhookh saachae kee saachae hee thripathaas rehai ||

Hunger for the True Lord shall consume your pain, and through the True Lord, you shall be satisfied.

Anehadh baanee guramukh jaanee biralo ko arathhaavai ||

The Gurmukh knows the unstruck sound current of the Bani; how rare are those who understand.

Naanak aakhai sach subhaakhai sach rapai rang kabehoo n jaavai ||65||

Says Nanak, one who speaks the Truth is dyed in the color of Truth, which will never fade away. ||65||

Jaa eihu hiradhaa dhaeh n hothee tho man kaithai rehathaa ||

"When this heart and body did not exist, where did the mind reside?

Naabh kamal asathhanbh n hotho thaa pavan kavan ghar sehathaa ||

When there was no support of the navel lotus, then in which home did the breath reside?

Roop n hotho raekh n kaaee thaa sabadh kehaa liv laaee ||

When there was no form or shape, then how could anyone lovingly focus on the Shabad?

Rakat bindh kee marree n hothee mith keemath nehee paaee ||

When there was no dungeon formed from egg and sperm, who could measure the Lord's value and extent?

Varan bhaekh asaroop n jaapee kio kar jaapas saachaa ||

When color, dress and form could not be seen, how could the True Lord be known?""

Naanak naam rathae bairaagee eib thab saacho saachaa ||66||

O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are detached. Then and now, they see the Truest of the True. ||66||

Hirda deh nahoti aodhoo tao mann sunn rahae bairaagee ||.

When the heart and the body did not exist, O hermit, then the mind resided in the absolute, detached Lord.

Naabh kamal asathhanbh n hotho thaa nij ghar basatho pavan anaraagee ||

When there was no support of the lotus of the navel, the breath remained in its own home, attuned to the Lord's Love.

Roop n raekhiaa jaath n hothee tho akuleen rehatho sabadh s saar ||

When there was no form or shape or social class, then the Shabad, in its essence, resided in the unmanifest Lord.

[/code]

Goun gagan jab thabehi n hotho thribhavan joth aapae nirankaar ||

When the world and the sky did not even exist, the Light of the Formless Lord filled the three worlds.

(Sidh Goshate mehla pehal at Ang 945 Sri Guru Granthh Saheb ji )

    • Part of the problem is the hostilities between India and Pakistan. If the border were open, Amritsar would easily become a huge trading city. Secondly, the National Highways Authority of India is constructing a new 6-lane expressway from Kashmir, through Amritsar/Jalandhar/Ludhiana to Dehli which will be part of the Ludhiana-Delhi-Kolkatta Industrial Corridor.  Maps of the New Silk Road show Kolkata as a key part of the "road". The Punjab to Kolkata expressway and rail connections will fulfill the ability to hook up to the New Silk Road.  In addition, while crossing to Pakistan via AH1 (Asian Highway 1) is difficult, India does connect to AH1 on the other side, towards the East. Finally, Punjab can trade with the world via Mundra port in Gujurat. Rail to Mundra, then sea onwards. Dubai is very close with a free port. If you send products to Iran, there are ground links onward to Europe.
    • Yeah, that's one possibility. Another I initially thought is that it's a Muslim trying to gather info. But then, you might ask, how does he know about Sikh textual sources. Well, you'd be surprised at their resourcefulness. A final possibility is he's a weak Sikh who was asked a question by a non-Sikh and now he's suddenly feverishly wondering where it's "written" that you can't marry a young child. To the latter, I would say, you're looking in the wrong spot. Gurbani isn't a 1428 page rulebook, like Leviticus or the Vedas: The Simritis and Shastras discriminate between charity and sin, but know not the essence of the Real Thing. Without the Guru, they know not the essence of the Reality, know not the essence of the Reality. Anand Sahib.
    • You're confusing two different things: One is merely adding starch to a turban to get a certain feel to the fabric. The other is tying your turban once and taking it off like a hat. It is this that people have a problem with. What's wrong with it is that Rehit says to tie your turban afresh every time. If you ask, "Where is that written?", it's written in Bhai Nand Lal ji's Rehitnama. @ipledgeblue didn't just make it up. Umm, no, bro. We're not evangelical Christians like President George W Bush of the US claiming to "talk to God" who told him to invade Iraq. "Speaking to him directly" basically ends up being doing whatever you feel like with the excuse that Guru ji told you to do it. If you still want to take your turban off like a hat, feel free to do so, but don't claim that it's Rehit.
    • You don't need to wear either a pag or dumalla in the gym. You can simply wear a meter or 1.5m small turban (gol pagg or round turban). It doesn't come off.
    • The reason you don't see anything wrong with it is because like a fish in water, you grew up in Western culture and imbibed it fully. It's very difficult to for parents to inculcate traditional culture while in the West. The reason there is a problem is because a kiss between a man and wife is a sexual act (I didn't say it's coitus, but it's still sexual.) By contrast a kiss between a mother and a child, for example, is not sexual. And in our culture, sexual acts are not allowed in public. Goras do allow it. And that's also the reason they have gay pride parades now with people walking around naked with children in attendance and so forth.
