Have to agree that culture and religion are two very different things.

These days alot of people are confusing and muddling up their culture and religion to the point that they cant distinguish between one or the other. This is where education is important so people dont start warping their religions by thinking cultural things they do are part of their religion, thats how religions get distorted. Culture doesn't need to be forgotten completely, but its important that religion comes first and any cultural tradition that might compromise the beleifs of your religion are forgotten about because at the end of the day to be sikh or hindu or muslim or christian is more important than being indian, pakistani, arab, english etc and doing things that are associated with this...

Hope you could understand my point sounds a bit confusing :T:

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

Consider the following Bhangra Group Please:

www.jerzeydesher.com

The majority of the people on this team are Amrithdharis, and the others are on the path to SIkhi. They do not have a girls part of their group, and their songs are carefully chosen to not represent anything Manmukhi. IS this wrong?

Personally, I look up to these college guys. They have taken the true Amrith and have used bhangra to encourgae other children to do the same!

Please, i am a moorakh, thus forgive my ignorance, but does Guru Ji literraly mean physical dancing? or does "dancing" represent submitting to the 5 evils or some analogy of some sort?

well, im off to bed,

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

Bhullar veer u r absolutely right regarding both culture and religion....all my other veers who don't know whats going on in India...I would like to tell that India especially Punjab rather than going more into culture and religion is going backwards.....When I was in India I used to think that at the rate the young guys r cutting their hair and moving into bad influence there won't be much sikhs left in Punjab but after coming New Zealand my thinking has totally changed....some one told me that Sant ji once said that Sikhi will come back from the same place where it got erased from that is western countries....I am so much amazed at all you guys from out of India ^_^^_^^_^ ....I feel like putting my head in ur feet.....just beacuse u r so much into sikhism....Punjab being the mother of our religion I never used to see guys talking abt sikhism as much I have seen u all....Guruji said "Raj Karega Khalsa" and now I know it will come true one day.....this was regarding the religion....

now the culture thing.....well it is also depleting but not that much.....I mean girls have started hating suits and find excuses to wear jeans and other western clothes

...they think that guys will think that this girl is pendu(illiterate) if she wears suits...but personally I feel that a suit depicts the girl being much more Punjabi and decent....girls only like cut-hair guys...they flirt all their life before marriage with cut-hair guys and when it comes to marriage they prefer a turbaned gursikh guy....u know y???coz they think gursikh guys r much better than others coz they don't take drugs r go after girls.....people back in Punjab ldon't like to discuss abt sikhi much...if u talk to some1 they will say come on become modernized...this is not the older times u gotta keep up with times...lol....arn't they funny???no matter how much our world becomes westernized we shud never forget our true self...that is WE ARE SIKHS  .....Sikhism is one of the golden religions among the world and we all should be proud of being one not trying to not sound like a sikh at all....I think I have said enuf....lol....

Those who listen to dirty lyrics and lustful tunes with attention, listen Nand Lal Jee, they will be punished by the angel of death.;

O my fascinating Lord, may I never listen to the faithless cynic, singing his songs and tunes, and chanting his useless words. ||1||Pause||

Meenaas, Masandhs, those with haircuts and those who kill their daughters; If a Sikh associates with them, he will not be united with the Lord and will suffer at the time of death..

The love of duality and doubt have ruined the self-willed manmukh, who is lured away by the Messenger of Death. Says Nanak, listen, O my mind: contemplate the True Lord forever. ||1||

That Sikh who dances or listens to worldly songs deserves punishment.

Gurbani related to dancing:

nachiai ttapiai bhagath n hoe ||

By dancing and jumping, devotional worship is not performed.

nach nach ttapehi bahuth dhukh paavehi ||

they dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain.

nach nach ttapehi bahuth dhukh paavehi ||

they dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain.

maaeiaa kaaran pirr bandhh naachai dhoojai bhaae dhukh paavaniaa ||

For the sake of Maya, they set the stage and dance, but they are in love with duality, and they obtain only sorrow.

maaeiaa kai arathh bahuth lok naachae ko viralaa thath beechaaree ||

So many people dance for the sake of Maya; how rare are those who contemplate reality.

gurmukh nirath har laagai bhaao ||

The Gurmukh's dance is to embrace love for the Lord.

nachan kudan man ka chao

They dance and jump around on the urgings of their minds.

alternate translation: dancing and jumping are a pleasure of the mind

nach nach haseh chaleh se roe

Those who dance and dance and laugh, shall weep on their ultimate departure.

Today the bigest tasks sikhs around th world, from panjab to timbuktu face is the current mix of sikh customs with panjabi culture customs and rituals.

panjab culture consists of inluencews from the mguls, hindu's,, etc. we need to diffrentaiate between this fine line which is so blured. as time has gone on its become even more blured as sikhs have taken on hindu panjabi customs, etc which we as sikhs should not carry out.

Panjabi doesnt equal = Sikh,

we need to get rid of these customs which are against the essence of sikhi.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
