Birmingham-Kaljug?

I think its ridiculous that it has come to the stage of calling a town 'kaljug'. Fair enough you might have heard gossip about some bad things that have occurred, are you telling me these sort of things don't happen anywhere else?

The only reason 'birmingham sangat' gets pointed out a lot because the majority of the sangat is made up of youth; and yes as youth we all make mistakes and learn from them. You tell me who has never done something they later on regret in life? Why is it that as a community we always look at the negatives, we are always constantly bringing people down. We can never look at the positives; never comment how the youth in birmingham have arranged successful youth camps all on their own, that they've held charity events raising hundreds of pounds for the needy, that some blessed individuals hold amrit vela everyday without fail; encouraging more people to take the step foward into sikhi. Yes there are kirtan diwans held every week at many locations- i dont know where you guys have been but there is no talking or chilling of any kind. There might be a talk/presentation at the beginning- then kirtan. Instead of encouraging these efforts or giving them support guidance if you think they need it-we go around listening to gossip and slander and decide to call the whole town kaljug.

Lets look at ourselves before we judge others eh, because of this avgun- we are getting nowhere in our jeevans.

Sorry for any mistakes but its time we stop segregating ourselves from each and remember we are all one- we are all brothers and sisters and should act like a family- not splitting each other up due to the town they are from- its pathetic.

Personally I have struggled with living in East London, I find the Sikhs 100% unsupportive, since living here for about 12 years and only EVER going out to Gurdwaras and no where else, and even after taking Amrit and being a practising Sikh, I still have no friends here. It is so sad that we cannot 'love' each other and constantly are suspicious, ever easy to gossip rather than support, it is so sad because I have seen so so so many people come to Gurdwaras in times of need and sadness only to leave, afarid of gossip. Why can't we pray for each other like do in churches and wish everyone happiness, instead of always being suspicous and indulging in gossip.

I would have sent a pm but not everyone reads them, so apologies for being off topic. However, as for East London sangat please do come to Friday Simran sessions at Singh Sabha Gurdwara Seven Kings (next to homebase), you can meet gursikhs here as well as get laha! They take place every week from 7:30pm-9:00pm. There is also a simran session at karamsar gurdwara sahib ilford every thursday 8:30pm to 9:15pm. Sangat is smaller in East London than other places but its still good! Last saturday of every month there is a keertan darbar at 7 kings singh sabha aswell.

<self edit> Please let me know if you want to know anything more about Sangat in East London.

Back to topic! As for Bham most of the sangat I have ever met from there seems to be really chardikala, I am envious of the amount of programmes that take place in Bham. As an outside observer it has seemed to be a live place for Sikhi and sangat.

I may be wrong but I'd say look at things in proportion. Percentage wise there is probably the same amount of 'dodgy stuff' that takes place in all sangats in all cities, its just that there is so very much more sangat in bham that obviously in proportion to the good stuff the bad stuff will be quite large compared to in other places so you notice it more, but really its probably the same ratio.

I have personally seen a difference in way people from

Birmingham even talk and act differently , I don't know, they are ruder , etc use foul language! All the singhs and singhnia get a bit too close and that's where it comes from. Most the rumours from the uk sangat come from

Birmingham, like someone said previously , there are

certain groups/families who have messed alot of sangat around. I was once told by a bibi from the time she had facebook she was added and messaged from boys from

bham only and no one else . Doesn't this show? This needs to be addressed.

You would think doing Simran and Gurbani would change a person but plenty of people who do Kirtan, Paath, attend Amritvela, etc still have messed around with the opposite sex, use foul language and so on. Without good qualities within of truthfulness, humility and love much of our Kamai goes to waste!

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
