Damdami taksal was in full force in 1980's and nobody (sgpc/akali dal etc) could raise a hand against Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa because every single panthic sikh organization consider him and his jatha as the representative of Sikhs all over the world. Even today... Sikh resident of Amritsar and Gurdaspur district are very respectful to Taksal jatha.

In 80's longowal and tohra were very afraid of Sant Jarnail Singh ji khalsa Bhinderanwalay. They knew that if the did something wrong, they won't escape the wrath of sikh sangat led by sant ji. Not sure about tohra but longowal later came out as panth traitors by having Rajiv-Longowal Act.

Also, SGPC was not pro-government run organization back in late 70's and early 80's.

SJS Bhindranwale I personally believe did not have too high a view of the SGPC. from the time about 1982, when the sgpc elections were about to go ahead, the secretary of sgpc approached SJS and asked for his support for all the Akali candidates. Sant Ji asked if all the candidates were amritdhari and vibrant Sikhs, and the secretary said no, they are not all amritdhari. Sant Ji asked why not and the secretary replied that we couldnt find 140 amritdhari candidates. Sant Ji said, I will give you 140 amritdhari vibrant Sikhs right now, will you give them nominations to be elected? The secretary said no, and the meeting ended. The AISSF contested 40 of the 140 sgpc seats and won only four. The Akalis went all out to stop the AISSF members getting elected onto SGPC. So I guess overall Sant Ji did not realy have a good view of them , but being the blessed Saint-Warrior that he was, he didnt say too much, because of keeping unity in the Panth.
