SIKH FEDERATION (UK) NATIONAL MANAGEMENT TEAM PLANNING EVENT

The Sikh Federation (UK) organised a planning event today at Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Sedgley Street, Wolverhampton for its own National Management Team and around a dozen leading Sikh organisations across the UK.

Those present or sent apologies were:

British Sikh Federation

Khalsa Aid

Satkaar campaign

Sikh Council UK

Sikh Organisation for Prisoner Welfare

Sikh Womens’ Aliiance

Sikh Youth Project

Sikhs in England

United Sikhs

Those that did not respond to the invitation were:

British Organisation of Sikh Students

British Sikh Consultative Forum

Network of Sikh Organisations

Sikh Missionary Society UK

50 projects/activities were presented that the Sikh Federation said it would be taking forward. These were grouped under the responsibility of four teams – a Political Voice Team, Sikh Identity Team, Human Rights Team and Development & Growth Team and presented by some of those belonging to the newly established National Management Team.

The planning event was an opportunity to get to know each other and gather information on skills and interests.

A case study was presented on the benefits of local lobby groups using the experiences in Leicester and how lobby groups could operate in different towns and cities. It was recognised by all concerned that these groups have huge potential to nurture new talent.

Around a dozen projects/activities were selected and developed further in teams and there was considerable discussion how organisations could work in partnership to best take forward some of the projects.

It was announced the National Management Team would operate in four regional hubs in the West Midlands, East Midlands, North and South. There would be a Managing Director in each hub and there would be a core group of 5-7 in each hub and supported by a number of other volunteers. Given the volume of work additional volunteers are encouraged to come forward. The regional hubs would try and meet monthly.

In addition, there will be teams of varying sizes around individual projects/activities, but each with an overall co-ordinator. Priorities will be set by the Board of Directors and a timetable for delivery established. Much of the communication will be through emails and meetings would take place as required.

A monthly reporting tool to monitor progress of projects/activities is being developed and quarterly meetings would take place to look at priorities and switch resources if required.

Dear Sadh Sangat Ji,

SikhYouthProject representatives attended this event.

The feedback is as follows:

A big thank you to Sikh Federation for organising such a much needed and well planned out event.

This allowed for all organisations to work in partnership and take lead roles in projects that fitted that organisations main attributes.

This also showed that we can work together and if we all share the burden, we can make a bigger difference sooner.

The SYP team will be helping on 4 different projects working with United Sikhs, Sikh Federation, SOPW and Sikh Council reps.

Thank you once again for organising this event.
