Sikh Lobby in the UK Parliament organised by the Sikh Federation (UK) now on Tuesday 13 December between 1-4pm in the Boothroyd Room, Portcullis House – Please not the change of date

On 10 November the Sikh Federation (UK) informed the Sangat that Fabian Hamilton MP’s office has just emailed the Sikh Federation (UK) to say they have booked the Boothroyd Room between 2-4pm on Tuesday 29 November for a Sikh Lobby. The lobby has now been delayed to Tuesday 13 December to better suit MPs and give more time for Sikhs that wished to have a bit more notice.

Apologies to those that may have made arrangements to take part in the lobby on 29 November.

Please:

i) immediately arrange to attend the lobby on Tuesday 13 December and aim to arrive by 1pm.

ii) contact your MP via email, telephone etc. and ask him or her to attend the Lobby in the Boothroyd Room – if you have previously informed your MP the lobby was taking place on 29 November

We need to have Sikhs from different parts of the UK to attend and lobby their MPs. Younger and more articulate Sikhs in particular are urged to attend.

The lobby is likely to cover a range of issues linked to Sikh identity, human rights violations and building a stronger political voice for the Sikh community.

A briefing will be prepared by the Sikh Federation (UK) and circulated around 1o days before the Lobby so you can also share it with your MP.

The following briefing has been sent to all UK MPs by the Sikh Federation (UK) and widely circulated to Sikhs so they can send to their own consitiency MPs.

Please find attached a briefing that sets out the issues Sikhs from across the UK will be raising with you at the Sikh lobby next week. Sikhs from your constituency may already have written to you about the lobby and arranged to see you in central lobby between 1-2pm, in the Boothroyd Room between 2-4pm or afterwards if this is more convenient.

Some may be unable to travel to London to meet you next Tuesday or you may be unavailable so the briefing sets out the actions we hope you will take on each issue that Sikhs will pick up with you locally in the coming weeks and months or when they take part in the next lobby in March 2012.

Great programme (from the bits I saw). Amrik Singh's dedication to the cause is admirable, and the way he and Dabinderjit Singh explained the change in focus of SFUK to one working for the longer-term benefit of Sikhs through lobbying and building relationships with politicians, is important for its strategic foresight. We need to continue to work to build the lobby stronger and influencing policy in its formative stages.
