World News > Indian Independence Day celebrated in US:

Washington, Aug 16 (IANS) :

India's Independence Day was celebrated with gusto in the US capital, with some 400 Indian Americans gathering at the Indian ambassador's official residence.

The turnout was larger than those seen in recent years, perhaps due to the arrival of India's new envoy, Ronen Sen, who took over last week.

Sen hoisted the national flag on a bright and sunny morning and then the national anthem was sung. The envoy then read out President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's address to the nation.

A group of school children rendered patriotic songs, notably "Vande Mataram" and "Sara Jahan se Achcha".

The ambassador's wife, Kalpana Sen, gave away certificates to the children of the embassy staff who had done well in their studies.

Meanwhile, five Sikhs, led by anti-India Sikh activist Gurmit Singh Aulakh, shouted slogans against India outside the building but their voice was drowned as some national songs were played equally loudly from the embassy grounds.

A number of Indian American associations in the greater Washington area also came together to celebrate the Independence Day.
