'namdhari' Dastar

Just a quick question to the Sangat, In many of the pictures I have seen portraying Guru Nanak Dev Ji his dastar looks like the style many Namdhari or Kookas wear today. My question is does anybody know more about why it is portrayed this way and whether it is suitable to tie in this way in Sikhi or are you likely to get questioned about it. I apologise if I have created offence in some way and none is intended.

kooka pagh? it looks like a gol pagh to me. :s. maybe back then paghs looked different to todays styles.

all of the photos of the gurus and the sikhs are like that. small tidy turbans wrapped flat on the forehead. The Namdharis didnt invent it, they just re-invented it.

Thank you chatanga. i have noticed a lot of Gurmut Sangeet Raagis wear it too. I just wondered why there aren't much Sikhs wearing this style and is it because to avoid any confusion etc.

sikh dastaars changed when we began to fight more so dumallah types came around to store weapons in and offer head protection. the pointy pagh most people wear today is based aupon mahraja styles (i think :D)

The Afghans wore their turbans big and in the style we do now, called Shahi style, but the Sikhs know wear the Shahi style more tidier and neater, but its still the same way of tying, layers down one side of the head, and up the the other side.

The Sikhs adopted this style to show the afghans that we are the rulers now.

amazing never ever knew that, cheers mate. so wat style did sikhs tie before invading afghanistan? also what is the shahi style that we took from afghans? u mean the lehmber hussainpuri style? coz i REALLY HATE THAT!!

cud ppl clarify wat r the names of these types of pagh, coz i know the ramgharias in uk wear the kenyan turbans coz thats where most of them came from in the 70s.

Dumalas were the style of dastaar worn by the nihangs and not the main style of dastaar used by everyone else. The Kooka style of dastaar is most likely just an old style of tying the dastaar that was worn by the originial Singhs that formed the Namdharis.

See below at pictures of Sikh soldiers which are around 155 years old and would almost certainly have also served in the armies of Maharajah Ranjit Singh and the Khalsa Raj. Most of the dastaars bear no resemblance to damala or boonga styles worn by Nihangs and nor do they bear any resemblance to modern Nok patiala styles. Some do look simliar to the kooka style as well:

those old paghs don't look very secure. how did they tie them :O
