INFORMATION ON HOW WE NAME SIKH CHILDREN

Article XVII - Ceremonies pertaining to Birth and Naming of Child

a. In a Sikh’s household, as soon after the birth of a child as the mother becomes capable of

moving about and taking bath (irrespective of the number of days which that takes), the family

and relatives should go to a gurdwara with karhah prashad (sacred pudding) or get karhah

prashad made in the gurdwara and recite in the holy presence of the Guru Granth Sahib such

hymns as “parmeshar dita bana” (Sorath M. 5 ,Guru Granth Sahib p. 628 ), “Satguru sache

dia bhej” (Asa M. 5 , Guru Granth Sahib p. 396 ) that are expressive of joy and thankfulness.

Thereafter if a reading of the holy Guru Granth Sahib had been taken up, that should be

concluded. Then the holy Hukam (command) should be taken. A name starting with the first letter

of the hymn of the Hukam (command) should be proposed by the granthi (man in attendance of

the holy book) and, after its acceptance by the congregation, the name should be announced by

him. The boy’s name must have the suffix “Singh” and the girl’s, the suffix “Kaur”.

After that the Anand Sahib (short version comprising six stanzas) should be recited and the Ardas

in appropriate terms expressing joy over the naming ceremony be offered and the karhah

prashad distributed.

Fairy tales ?? Go and read some history and tell me prior to the creation of Khalsa and the initiation of the Panj Pyarey, where was the Singh or Kaur surname designation assigned to Sikhs ? It's a specific title earned when you have submitted your head to the Guru the prerequisite is taking Amrit and joining the Khalsa.

If you cant make the required sacrifice you havent gained the title. Go and read any historical books you want, and tell me when Guru Gobind Singh Ji actually became Gobind Singh...it was ONLY after taking amrit from the Panj Pyarey that he took this title.

Now if the Guru himself did not use the title Singh before taking amrit, what gives anyone else the right to use the title without fulfilling the criteria , which is taking Amrit ??

Hence why none of the other 9 Gurus are given the title Singh. Why ? is it because they are lesser Sikhs ? Certainly not...It's because at the time the prequisite of Amrit wasnt in existance.

KEEP YOUR FAIRY TALE VIEWS TO YOURSELF. READ THE ABOVE FACTS FROM SIKH REHAT MARYADA AND STOP CONFUSING YOURSELF.

It's nothing to do with caste. Im not advocating using family surnames. It's about realising that Singh and Kaur isn't just a label you can apply to yourself. It's not a micky mouse title. If your willing to follow Gurus hukum and sacrifice your head then you have earned the title.

You might as well all start calling yourselves doctors, major generals, lords , prime minister's. The same logic applies. If you don't meet the requirements/pre requisites required to Hold the titles quite simply your not qualified to use them.

Of course you are advocating using family surnames. In your confused mindset. you are asking Sikhs to keep using their backward tail names

until they have taken Amrit. Even after seeing the facts from Sikh Rehat Maryada, you are still putting forward own illogical, casteist theory forward.

Logic and you are at loggerheads and that is the reason of your whole confusion and inability to understand real and simple facts.

Veerji by that logic a new borne child has no right to be named Singh or Kaur ? ........

Once in a while shouldnt we relax our strict definitions to allow for a greater sense of belonging ?

You are devoid of simple logic and understanding. Answer the questions. When did Guru Gobind Singh Ji become Gobind Singh from Gobind Rai ?? Before or after taking Amrit. When was Singh and Kaur created ? At amrit sanchaar April 13th 1699 to those that took amrit and were initated into the Khalsa Panth.

Guru Nanak Dev ji's message was the rejection of caste, creed, colour etc but why wasn't he called Guru Nanak Singh ?? Why are none of the previous 9 Gurus prior to Guru Gobind Singh Ji given the title Singh ??
