Waheguru ji ka khalsa, waheguru ji ki fatehh

Sadh sangat ji .. can anyone please tell me what is cheddar cheese, reason I m asking is cuz I was/m in doubt that cheddar cheese was/is made of animal products. If though I found the source where it says that it doesn’t but still want to be sure..does anyone here who eats cheddar cheese..

This is what I found.

The vast majority of cheddar cheese produced is made from pasteurized milk (held at a temperature of 61.6 oC for not less than 30 minutes or a time temperature combination of equivalent lethality). Pasteurization of cheesemilk destroys pathogenic bacteria, and also reduces the population of other micro-organisms present, thereby promoting starter culture growth. Cheddar cheese can also be made from raw milk or milk that has been mildly heat treated just to reduce the population of organisms in competition with the starter culture. Some believe that cheese made with these types of milk that have been exposed to a lower heat load has better flavour than cheese made from pasteurized milk because more of the enzymes and microbes that contribute to flavour are allowed to survive. Safety is an issue with cheeses made from milk that is not pasteurized and so these cheeses require long aging times (minimum 60 days from the beginning of the manufacturing process) to allow the development of conditions that are unfavourable for pathogenic organisms. Cheese that is not made from pasteurized milk can be used as a food ingredient only provided the food is manufactured or processed so as to pasteurize the cheese to meet legal specifications.

Thanks

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

Just be on the look out for Rennet which is from and animal source. Rennet is commonly found in chesse. It is the inner lining of the fourth stomach of calves and other young ruminants. A dried extract made from the stomach lining of a ruminant, used in cheesemaking to curdle milk. Other wise cheedar cheese does not contain any animal products.

Hope that helps!

This is not always true because all cheese companies do not list if the "ENZYMES" are made from animal or plant or microbial source.

You have to call the company up or write to them and find out what is their source of "ENZYMES". This applies to all types of cheese not just cheddar. You shouldn't assume that if it doesn't say Rennet then it doesn't contain rennet.

We use "Tilamook" company's cheese. They make all kinds. And they use micrbial enzymes instead of rennet. THey only use rennet in Sharp Cheddar Cheese.

Most supermarkets nowadays (especially here in the uk) label cheeses as vegetarian or not to specify which type of rennet (animal or microbial) they use.
