Unemployment is the biggest problem in the Sikh community - Iqbal Singh

AMRITSAR: Iqbal Singh Lalpura, the recently appointed Chairman of the Minority Commission, expressed concern over the rising unemployment rate in the Sikh community.

Emphasis has been laid on availing the benefits of the schemes. In a detailed meeting with the district authorities on the subject today, he said that the problem of unemployment was greater in the Sikh community than in any other minority community in the country. He said that although Sikhs were in the majority in Punjab but it was a minority in the entire population of the country.

He said that the statistics show that the overall unemployment rate in the country is 4.6 per cent as against 6.4 per cent among the Sikhs.
He said that the trend of suicides was also high due to this reason.

Mr. Lalpura appealed to the Shiromani Gurdwsra Parbandhak Committee officials present in the meeting, Chief Khalsa Diwan and representatives of Khalsa College to make the most of the various schemes being run by the Central Government for education, employment and vocational education for the minority community. Let your community know.
Mr. Lalpura thanked the officers who came for the meeting despite being on leave on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

Earlier, he paid obeisance at Sri Darbar Sahib and thanked Guru Ram Dam for the service.

On this occasion Deputy Commissioner Mr. Gurpreet Singh Khaira, Commissioner of Police Dr. Mr. Sukhchain Singh Gill, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mr. Ranbir Singh Moodhal, Additional Commissioner Mr. Sandeep Rishi, Welfare Officer Mr. Surinder Singh Dhillon, SDM Mr. Deepak Bhatia, Secretary Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Mr. Sukhdev Singh Bhurakohna, Mr. Subhash Thobha, Mr. Jasbir Singh Gill and other dignitaries were present.

On this occasion Mr. Sukhdev Singh Bhurakohna raised serious issues such as exclusion of Sikh students from various examination halls and search of turbans in various entrance examinations and said that Sikh Kakars have been recognized all over the world. But sadly, there are still cases in India where Sikh children are targeted for their unique identity. Mr. Lalpura assured to strictly prevent such incidents in future.
