  5. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Please find below an article published in this weeks local Grays newspaper. http://www.yourthurrock.com/2010/10/27/demonstrations-outside-grays-sikh-temple/ Demonstrations outside Grays Sikh temple OVER 250 Sikh demonstrators from across the UK demonstrated outside the Grays Sikh temple in Maidstone Road in an attempt to prevent meat and alcohol from being served at a wedding. The group confronted the temple committee who were adamant that the party would go ahead. The demonstrators went into the hall to prevent the ceremony. Private talks over the contravention, known as Beadbi took place. A spokesperson for the demonstrators said: “The committee said that although they agree with them, they were in no position to take a decision as their local community had approved the usage of the party hall. After no resolution being reached, the Grays Gurdwara committee and local community have been given one month to confirm whether they will implement the ruling of no alcohol and meat. The group, although peaceful threatened to take away a number of religious symbols next time The whole peaceful protest was filmed by Sikh TV and Sikh Channel. Members of the Sikh committee were contacted but did not submit a statement.

  6. When I started this topic I just wanted to get a consensus of how many people supported the queue system. The only places I can think where is langar is served in the traditional manner is- Guru Nanak Nishkam Jatha Ramgarhia Sikh Temple - Graham st Any others anyone know of ? I dont think people will switch back now. A generation has been brought up on the queue system and they do not know any better.

  7. Good point lets just install free vending machines, next to the parsahd stick a self service sign. Lets forget about sucham. after all its much more effcient. Better still, why bother making langer lets just buy it, cause im sure theres no ever available to make. Lers just get a self catering firm in. Brainwave, lets franchise out the langer. It raises money and solves the proble that no one shoud do any seva! i can just imagine the akand paath invite.... Sri Akand paath bhog followed by subway ka langar

  8. No Satguru Nanak went to mecca to try and make some of the deluded muslims there understand that god is not contained within the Kaaba as many thought at the time. Just as Hindus in India had thought their gods and goddesses were contained in statues and pictures etc. Langar sends a message of equality, love and compassion. It helps the needy and serving the sangat is a very good deed. However a sikh cannot find god just by serving langar, in fact a sikh never has to serve langar a day in their life and still find god through naam jaapna and love for god which is said to be the greatest service to god, above all other service. It is also said that other works are fruitless without the name of god, Naam which is the only boat to take us across the darkness of this age. You cannot find god by dipping in HOLY AMRIT(not a pond), the ONLY way to find god in this age is through the Naam. Please read and understand gurbani before making assumptions. We go there to have darshan of the Guru, not a tombstone

  9. For me the following are the reason that i do not support the queue system: In a queue, sewadars are talking and the sangat in the queue are talking while waiting to be served. There is a mad rush in the queue system , everyone wants to get to the food quickly Sangat with all sorts of hygiene picks the plates, glasses, spoons up and take them to the sewadar, in the process touching other plates, glasses, spoon in the process. Elderly would find it difficult or pressured to stand in the queue to get langar. The interaction between the sewadars and sangat is not the same as you get when one is doing traditional sewa. Most importantly, You do not receive langar this way because langar is being put into the plate directly. Do people hold their trays in one hand and get their parshadas with the other? I dont think so. Sewadar, "Would you like kheer veer ji?" (spit). Man holding tray , "Nahi veer ji i am on a diet" (spit). FINALLY, I DONT THINK QUEUE SYSTEM IS RIGHT BECAUSE THE OTHER SYSTEM WORKS. Now lets look at the traditional system: Sewadars can move faster between the pangat and distribute langar efficiently. Sewadar's concentration is on feeding sangat and not talking to fellow sewadars. Sangat waits while sitting until langar is brought to them, this is a lot easier for elderly and it doesn't exclude them. No one but sewadars get to distribute plates, glass, water, spooons etc, this to me is more hygienic. Sewadars walk with food in their left arm and this is not only efficiently but also prevents spit going into langar.

  11. Is there any evidence, or pictures of Guru Gobind Singh Jis shastars which are made of modern day "sarbloh" aka pig iron? Look at the following link http://www.info-sikh.com/GGPage1.html The shastars held at Keshghar Sahib are obviously damascus, the tint and pattern shows that, the weapons have gold on them, ivory and bone grips. The sheilds are made of rhino / buffalo hide and have gold gilded bosses on them. Are you going to say that theses shastars are not authentic and should not be associated with our Gurus? Who knows maybe in 50 years time they will replace those with crappy kirpans from outside Harmandir Sahib with lil green stickers which say "M.S Quality" I personally dont like Kam Singhs kirpan, but I respect the fact that he has learnt some kind of smithing, maybe if you were more true to the Indo Persian armoury then you would have more positive feedback, it just looks like a fancy kitchen knife to me.

  13. difference from hinduism: -no idol worship -god is never born and never dies(incarnations of vishnu etc in hinduism) -God has no form, is nirankaar(formless) -no caste -women are equal to men(no sati, women jumping on funeral pyre after husband;s death) -ritual baths in rivers and pilgrimages are blind rituals which do not cleanse the soul -no priesthood(pundits, etc), all sikhs are "priests" including women -don't believe in holiness of cows or other scared animals -hindu mythology such as the earth is supported up by a giant bull etc -no fasting(karva chauth) instead of fasting sikhs feed other people(langar, free community kitchen). difference from Islam: -God is in all human beings, even the kafirs or the "infidels" -God is everywhere, not only in heaven -No shrine is more sacred than another(Mecca), all places where God's praises are sung are sacred -Man can be liberated while alive(jeevan mukhat) rather than liberation at death or judgement day -everyday is 'judgemnet day' for sikhs -women do not need to veil themselves -all religions are God's creation -no need to fast or do pilgrimages, true fast is surrendering to God's will(instead of fasting sikhs feed other people(langar, free community kitchen). and true pilgrimage is living a truthful life -muslims keep an uncut beard but sikhs don't cut any hair(no hypocrsiy) -no clergy, imams, etc all sikhs can lead a prayer including women -sikhs believe in reincarnation -sikhs do not belive in a "devil" or "satan" which opposes God, because in sikhi all creation is in God's command, nothing is out of God's command -sikhs don't belive in circumcision cause God's creation is perfect and if God wanted men not to have foreskin then he would have made men that way. -also if circumcision makes one a muslim, then what about women?(bhagat kabir ji, SSGs ji) -don't revere tombs of pirs and fakeers that's enough for now... peace.

  14. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh, Lets start from the beginning..... Pyara...IT certainly wasn't self glorification - it was the glorification of those well deserving Sikhs who have invested most of their lives in achieving their goals. Its always the age old argument that money should always be spent on the poor and the needy ..agreed! and I'm sure you would be one of those who would be the first to say that the sikhs have been contributing to society for over five hundred years why hasn't anyone taken notice! Well Navdeep Singh has to be commended for putting his money where his mouth is and actually raising the profiles of Sikhs. Sure it was lavish ... why shouldn't it be .... look how many other award ceremonies take place -the asian awards etc etc etc ...... why can't we have one for Sikhs!!!! You said you dont see the point! well the point is clear to me .... it's to promote achievement by Sikhs, it's to recognise the efforts and selfless service of individuals that have spent their lives in the service of others without anyone even noticing ...eg United Sikhs Well Done And Good Luck To them! Guptkuri.......Well each and every individual had the opportunity to nominate sikhs in a variety of ways ........ did you? Those that were nominated, regardless of looks were all sikhs and not neccesarily from punjab! and they worked incredibly hard to be where they are today ... don't knock them.... Where are you ? are you good enough to be nominated? Khalistan Zindabad ...... Sri Maan Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Jee Khalsa Bhindranvale - humble namaskaar to them. Today we are trying to raise our profile within the communities that we live in. In that particular category it was someone who was singing bhangra songs.... fine it might not be your cup of tea ... but the guy has made an achievement ... why didn't you nominate someone more deserving! Avnitk.. * huge Sigh* what are you talking about ? Can you please tell me what a manmukh looks like !!! I don't think anyone is qualified enough to make such a ridiculous statement. Are you a Gurmukh? question yourself? You may look like one but your comment is definately not one that a Gurmukh would have made! It actually was about Sikhs ... what's this about Punjabi's ? are punjabi's not Sikhs???? AS for Hoshiarpuria !!!!!!! really not very hoshiar!!!! were you actually there!!? think not!! How do you know it was a fix -- oh yeah Des Pardes - of course thay always tell the truth!! - not !!! The video was not self promotion!!! - it was actually showing Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji receiving the designation of "BHAI SAHIB" from Akal Takht Sahib, for the truly selfless way that they completed the seva of the four takhts. The queen had nothing to do with it - get your facts right. And it was only right and proper that the video should be shown because it is the GREATEST AWARD that can be bestowed by the panth on anyone ... check it out ... less than a handful have been awrded in the last century!!!! Get over your issues with soho road and stop misleading people. Oh Please if you know about insider dealing let us in on it ... bcos it was anything but fixed. Why is it that you people are always ready to criticise but never willing to offer your support to those trying to do something for the panth - in whatever way they choose. PLEASE believe me when I assure you that newspapers tell 5% fact and 95% fiction!! Hardeep - I'm sure you must also have insider info about the business venture for sure!!! Why can't you guys see that it's stupid comments like yours that have hampered the progress of sikhs throughout the centuries. We do not need to fear the enemy bcos the enemy is within. When someone is trying to do something for Sikhi, for the panth, why can't you give your support? why must you pull the rug from under peolpes feet. I'm sure there will be others popping up - but is that not a good thing! why can't we inspire our kids to achieve ... give them goals .... maybe in the future all of you will make the effort to see who is in the community worthy of an award . and if you want Gursikhs up there ....then nominate them!!!! simple!!

  16. As is often the case, the discussion descends into simple generalisations with examples to suit one or another point of view. Mentioning harmandir sahib as an example, is like using Mecca as an example of a mosque and St Peter's in the Vatican as an example of a church. I am not disputing the importance of langar. I think it is an extremely important aspect of sikhism in what it symbolises and also what it means for sikhs in everyday life. This discussion was started by someone criticising the fact that sangat (in many gurdwaras) are made to form a queue for langar. My view (and of course, other views are available), is that this is a very trivial issue with respect to what langar is. Two years ago people were discussing whether to have chairs in langar halls and now it is queuing. What will it be next?? Perhaps, whether their should be a quota for roti?? The substantive issue with langar is that it has gone from a simple meal that the community share to an extravagant feast....and for some people, it has now become the main reason why they attend. and to Mr Bundha....a temple is a place of worship/house of God. Is that not what a gurdwara is?? MentalSingh - apology accepted. Thanks and yes, if in a professional capacity I did work for a gurdwara, I would invoice them.

  17. Hi people From what I've seen the queue system works much better in certain gurdwaras. Also in smaller gurdwarras or when there isn't much sangat yes it is nice to be served langar but it is equally as lovely humbly waiting in turn for gurujis food which is lovingly served by sevadars. It doesn't matter how its served either way its about the love and selfless service and humbleness. Also in my experience a smaller sangat is able to cope with and keep track of the sangat and able to see who needs water etc and serve the sangat properly. With a larger sangat this is virtually impossible and also by the time say the daal comes around, the sangat may have finished their subji which was served before hand, paani may be served after the langar is finished, people may be overlooked and maybe even perceived to already have eaten. Different sangat coming at different times in great numbers makes it very difficult to serve properly. Godbless the sevadars that stand on their feet for hours lovingly serving langar to waiting sangat.

  18. ^^^That's your opinion and I have mine. Seva is about love and devotion and sevadars are serving with the same love and devotion. If you think otherwise and that it's becoming like maccis you are seriously deluded and insulting all that love waiting patiently and humbly for gurujis food and those who serve with love. I find it ridiculous that people are not humble enough to stand in line for the holiest food on earth.

  19. How do you reconcile your concerns about this time of kalyug with having a profile picture of Led Zeppelin - a band who in the 1970s were renowned for their drug use and interest in the Occult? I am not criticising you - I am just interested.

  20. Sarcasm is the lowest form of speech. And no I'm not doing nindya of Guru Sahib, you however are doing nindya of sevadars and sangat all over the world. The gurus children are a part of the guru so you're the one doing the nindya. You are overlooking a whole lot, but if you really think you can make it work then go ahead and sort it out, no one's stopping you, there's no point in arguing about it.

  21. Forgive me for being naive, as I am still learning. But, I'm not sure I understand what is so wrong with the line system. I mean, I do understand that the act of serving everyone itself is important. I suppose I'm having difficulty distinguishing the original way of doing things... from just working together. For instance, when I make meals at my house, everyone helps. It's very rare for just one person to be cooking and bringing it to everyone, as everyone wants to help one another out. If I am cooking, then usually everyone is fumbling over one another to help out, lol. My daughter usually helps put the plates together, and my son sets them on the table, then we all go sit together to eat. I don't force anyone to do this, we just never have been ones to let one person do all the work (unless it comes to cleaning the house, lol, then the kids have a million reasons why they cannot ) Now, I do realize it's not a matter of what goes on in the household (the topic of this thread, I mean), but I do know that when those things do not happen in my house, then everyone tends to demand more from me, rather than being grateful for getting a plate at all. ...and of course, I would do it regardless, but it would wear on me over time, that is for sure. I don't do it just to be thanked, I do it because it is my job as a mom, of course, and because I love them. But it is different when it just comes to be expected rather than seen as something nice. It becomes a demand rather than actually wanting to do it, and seems to lose some of the meaning behind it when that happens. I am not sure I understand how people going to stand in line to help reduce footwork for the people serving is such a bad thing. It seems to me they are simply helping one another out, which is a good thing, right?

  24. My grandparent had a religious tattoo and the reason for it was that every time they saw it they remembered babaji. I likened this to the fact that whenever I look down and see my kara I think of god or something to do with sikhi, and anything that reminds us of Babaji and leads us to his meditation can't be that bad seeing as in this age it is so rare of one to think of God. A sikh tattoo in an indecent place is another story though and would be pretty ridiculous and weird not to mention evil!

  26. Right mate, now if we take leather shoes off surely we can be bothered enough not to wear leather jackets if possible, out of respect? Imagine if someone took a pair shoes in a bag into Darbar Sahib by accident. Do you think they would just leave them in the bag or take them out asap? Even though the shoes are not being worn I think there's still an element of disrespect bringing slaughtered animal parts into the gurdwarra when it could be avoided mate.
