  1. While reading through the response, the word ਮਿਲੈ stood out for me. I'll put down what came to my mind while reading. Bhagat Kabeer Ji is talking about how this mind goes into every direction while the physical body does not. Generally, when we think of sangat we only think of physical sangat. There is another type of sangat that we usually do not think about. It's sangat of the sub-consious (the mind). This type of sangat is equally destructive as physical sangat but is much much more subtle. The word ਮਿਲੈ would mean to receive without [much] effort (I think). If we extend this to the tuk, the meaning "According to the company it keeps, so are the fruits it eats." does not really work because "to receive" and "to keep" have different meanings. Going back to the mind, lets look at a few examples. - if mind goes towards someone it finds beautiful, then you may get kaami thoughts - if mind goes towards someone it despises, then you may get angry thoughts - if mind goes towards material things, then you may get greedy or experience attachment - if mind goes towards it's own "virtues" then you may get egotistical Sangat of the mind is stressed by bhagat jee. He is saying that look this mind goes to so many places which is in effect doing sangat of whoever is at that place. As the saying goes: "Watch your thoughts: They become your words. Watch your words: They become your actions. Watch your actions: They become your habits. Watch your habits: They become your character. Watch your character: It becomes your destiny." Physical sangat will impact us only if our mind gets involved. After all, it was always about the mind and never about the body. Just as a lotus flower, physically it lives in the dirt but it still manage to spread its fragrance around: khY nwnku gur prswdI ijnw ilv lwgI iqnI ivcy mwieAw pwieAw ]29] kehai naanak gur parasaadhee jinaa liv laagee thinee vichae maaeiaa paaeiaa ||29|| Says Nanak, by Guru's Grace, those who enshrine love for the Lord find Him, in the midst of Maya. ||29||
  2. It's quite simple, raagi's sing filmi tunes because when they do that people give them more money. Also, I have been told by MANY raagi's that when they do raag kirtan for a while sangat gets up and leave, so they keep shabada sung in raag very short. I think the problem lies with us, not them. We don't appreciate raags anymore. PS. not ALL raagi's do kirtan for money, before someone mentions that <_<
  3. ^^ Good answer. Read some history please. At that time, Sikhs were trying to stay alive by living in jungles. They were not living in posh houses like we do today and eating tasty foods.
  4. I would discuss this only if you can find the rehitnama in it original form, i.e. in gurmukhi Translations do not glow for me.
  5. Going in line with a few people have said, one could easily argue that tabla, vajaa and khartalaa used during keertan are also nothing more than kan rass ...

  8. I have sent money to India using Western Union. But the company charges quite a bit to send money overseas. Does anyone know of other organizations that don't charge as much to send money?
  9. I would recommend getting in touch with Keepra yourself, send him a PM. I am in Canada, not sure how to send help to US. I will have more details once I go to the bank. Hopefully I can get away from work during lunch today. If not today then tomorrow for sure.
  10. ^ Why can't you put it in your pocket, as long as pocket is clean.
  11. WAH, shabaash goes out to everyone from me. We have done a REAL good job of helping our fellow Sikh. WAH I was hoping we would be able to help our brother in his time of need. But as usual, all I see is people saying they will do this, they will do that, but in the end nothing ends up happening. If you are going to do that, why bother getting someone's hopes up in the first place?!!! BRAVO !! Keep bickering amongst yourself like dogs over small petty issues while ignoring someone's plea for help. And then we have a audacity to call ourselves Sikhs and be proud of it while in reality, we are nothing more than lowly animals who only think for ourselves. Actually that's worse than animals. Animals defend their own kind, we just sit back and watch our brothers and sisters rot away to nothing !!! BRAVO
  12. Yes lets all drop out of school cause we are reading kachi bani :o don't read those adverts on public transit either, that is also kachi bani !!! :o Oh and don't listen to people talking either, that is kachi bani too: :o I am going to stuff my ears with cotton, will only unplug them at gurudwara I am going close my eyes always, will only open them at gurudwara and even then only when i am reading bani. That outta be enough to ensure i don't come across any kachi bani, even by accident :D
  13. India needs people like Dr. Abdul Kalaam and Dr. Manmohan Singh as leaders.
  14. I was going to post a few shabads, but I felt that would be extremely hypocritical of me as I can not relate to you at all. I can only say that keep up with your sikhi and leave your worries to guru sahib. He will sort everything out, even though at the time of happening it may not seem like the right thing. Speaking from experience, I used to think that things did not workout and it hurt me a lot for a long time. But over time (more than 2 years) I have come to realize that whatever happened was for my own good. Guru Sahib truly did save me from a whole lot of trouble. It was only my feeble mind that was not realizing all the gifts I had been given, it was only looking at the 1 thing I did not get. Guru Raakha
  15. I do know of a sakhi of Guru Gobind Singh wearting karas when they were a child and then threw them into a river. I am also pretty sure that armies would have worn war bracelets before this time. If my memory serves me right, that kara was a gold kara
