  1. When people say things like "free as a bird" etc, do you think these birds have a choice or are they on auto-pilot controlled by instinct etc? Maybe we are on auto pilot too just we have more choices to make and different contsraints to deliberate?
  2. My dads had allotments for years. He's got 2 at the moment. Pay £25 a year each. Grow stuff like sweetcorn, turnips, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, runner beans, methi, dhania, spinach, chilli's, pea's, and few other bits. Plus got a pear and cherry tree there too. Got mint and few bits in back garden, mostly stick to flowers at home though.
  3. I work in contruction industry bro and I've met loads of guys that wear Turbans. My brother in law does aswell. Personally I think they have it good not having to wear a hard-hat, keep warm in the winter time and still represent Sikhi. As far as the sweating and headaches go, sounds like an excuse.
  4. if it did say something about mixed race would you believe it?
  5. EDL have been around for a few years now. When I first heard of em, I think was from a newspaper article after a protest, which slaughtered them and painted picture of them being racists. I watched a few youtube videos, which didn't do them any justice either. I spent a little time reading stuff off their forums and it did seem like they were trying to stop idiots from coming to these protest, (or stop people acting like idiots at the protests). But I think there were too many trouble makers for them to handle and their message got lost so I stopped paying them any attention. But anyways I've just noticed that there is now an EDL Sikh division? any of you guys affiliated?
  6. i like your post, but aint you handing out your own dodgy certificates?
  7. Better to move out anyways and have your own space. You don't have to live miles and miles away, but just having that little bit of separation and your own room helps alot. My thinking is same as your Pritpalsingh1 in the way that I'd like to be there to look after my parents. But with us, my mother (who is amritdhari), comes out with typical silly punjabi Sass stuff and eventually it just got too much.
  8. I dont get that bit, you saying Sikh women clueless or something bro? Why they need men to set the example and make them understand? How about if I want to put up a few lights in/outside, bit of tinsel here and there, relax with friends family, have a few nice meals and give a few pressies out to people who I appreciate? Not because it's Christ-Mass, or whatever, but because I've been working hard all year and for me this is now time to chill out and relax since work is closed anyways. Is that acceptable?
  9. Consistency is the key to everything in life. What you do on a daily basis makes a huge difference to where you end up. An example of this is when I was living on my own I had a poor diet, eventually it started making me feel crap and contributed to me getting into a depressive phase and getting lazy. Then I'd slack off work and get stressed and when that started piling up I'd get more depressed. I clawed myself out of it a few years back, but I still have to remind myself to keep a positive mentally. Main thing that helps me is recognising that I'm an immortal being living for a limited time in this mortal body and at my age I don't have time to waste being depressed, it's time to live, learn, help and teach.
  10. I've never seen any women walking around with bloodstained clothes because of their period. I could understand this being an issue decades or centuries back, but these days there are things called tampons and pads etc available.
  11. http://www.abebooks.co.uk/SIKHS-TRANSFER-POWER-1942-1947-KIRPAL-SINGH/11484743479/bd http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chakravyuh-Gurtej-Singh/dp/8185815143 2nd one not available but it has ISBN number on webpage which should help you.
  12. People in India and Punjab should be sorting out their own problems. India has a space program. They spend billions on military. It's about time they started sorting themselves out.
  13. Gurdwaras should get together and run the tv channels. by "run" i mean set them up so they can support themselves, but if they need funds the Gurdwaras should back em up.
  14. A few years back I went through a phase where I used to feel like crap. I had many of the symptoms of depression. Mostly I used to feel tired and lethargic and didnt want to do anything, which started to affect work and family life, which adds to the stress and makes things worse. Buts its like a snowball effect. I went to see a Doctor who diagnosed me as having depression. Which I didnt really agree with at the time because I know I'm a postive kinda person. Plus it was kind of stupid, the way Dr gave me a questionaire to fill and return with a week later. If I did have serious depression problem the Dr wouldn't help me until the following week? 'Oh you've got depression, here take these pills 3 times a day' he said. I decided not to take these pills which I could potentially get hooked on. After doing a little research I realised what I thought was depression was really the results of years of a bad diet. There was too much sugar in my diet from fizzy drinks which was the main cause of me feeling crap. This is when I understood by what people mean when they say 'You are what you eat'. I switched up my diet and stopped with the fizzy drinks, sweets, snacks and takeaways and started drinking pani and eating more fruit and veg. I soon started feeling different like I have more energy, feeling positive and happy because I have nothing to stress about because now I get everything done and don't hide away from stuff. So yeah, basically if your going through what I went through: low moods, feeling hopeless, no motivation, aches and pains, lack of energy, trouble sleeping, not doing well at work, avoiding contact with friends and family - these are some symptoms of depression. Maybe you really have depression, but have a look at your eating habits and think about whether you need to change them. In my opinion and in my case these feelings weren't coming from outside but inside me after I had polluted my body with junk.
  15. In the quote it basically says if you wear this this will happen but "WHY"? Why would God make your soul suffer for this long? Sorry but in my opinion Waheguru isn't hateful in this way. I always thought that back in the day they used to come up with stuff like this to deter people from wearing hats/topi's (topiya) because Hindu's wear these little hats for some religious stuff and Muslims do too. So people used to use wrath of God as propaganda. I might sound a bit stupid here, but it makes sense to me that people could make up stuff saying this and that will happen to you for 7 lifetimes, for wearing this symbolic item that people from other religions (which we're competing with) are renowned for, to stop our people associating with theirs no? Or to make a statement that we are different from them and to act in a similar fashion you will suffer for 7 lifetimes etc etc? I read something on this forum last year with similar tuk, might even be the same, but there was also something in there about wearing Green color and basically it was saying this and that will happen to anyone who wears a hat or green color(Muslim color?), but that wasn't said by any Guru Ji.
  16. Watching Sikh channel right now and i've seen several people wit red/green Dastars. Maybe there were certain stereotypes when those words were written Green is considered traditional color of Islam. But I dont see how one would become a muslim by wearing a green Dastar. And cant really imagine God hating someone and/or sending them to hell for wearing a green/red Dastar.
  17. i think where i was going with that probably side tracks from this discussion a bit and isnt needed. good point though. thats what i was said in my earlier post, but i think you've totally missed the point. Its not just about the topknot being called a topknot. The boy in question may not want to be known as "the boy with the topknot". He may not be comfortable as being known by those terms. Even though amongst ourselves we might say things like 'Oh guttee vale munde nu haak maree!', so its funny how we do use topknot to identify people yet in the wrong situation using the same words to identify same person gets you in trouble. I had a topknot/turban during school years myself, so I do understand how for someone else it could be offensive, or even not offensive but just awkward as theyve been put on the spot infront of 200 kids. In punjabi school I remember a teacher identifying a kid by the color of his ramaal(cloth) on his topknot, but the same kid may not be comfortable with being identified by his white teacher infront of his white friends. This issues a bit deeper than i first thought and I understand that bit, I just cant get over the irony of it all. I mean we can complicate this all we want but simple matter is she called the boy with the topknot "the boy with the topknot". that was the teachers mistake. I think the issues come from us complicating things and bringing our own insecurities and egos into it.
  18. The whole thing is about someone calling a "topknot" a "topknot" really. One person in same situation as the "boy with the topknot" might get offended and another might not because at the end of the day its a topknot and hes a boy with the topknot. IMO the parents' reaction is a little over the top. I get what you peeps are saying, bout identifying the kid with the topknot as “boy with the top knot” which put the spotlight on the boy and maybe made him feel uncomfortable but accusing someone of racism. The boy with the topknot does actually have a topknot lol, the teacher might not be racist but the boy with the topknot got his parents to accuse her of that. What if she's offended by that? who can she complain to? Also I think the kids been/being mollycoddled somewhat lol. What happens when he's out in the streets and some kids he dont know start shouting abuse or whatever, would he tell his parents? would he call the cops and say he's been offended?
  19. I've heard stories before about people stealing money as you described above. Also others like one about this bibi that used to steal purses in sangat. Other stories about people that do seva taking(stealing) petty stuff like butter/milk/sugar from the storeroom and taking it home. some people might think its only few pound etc, no big deal, but its still theft in my book even if its 1p and tomorrow you never know, this woman that has no shame in stealing right infront of people, she might steal someones loaded purse or something. If i was in your shoes i'd report it to someone at the Gurdwara.
  20. Sounds like someone i once knew. i wouldnt say "end" the friendship. If he values your friendship he'll put the effort in, otherwise just move on mate. You've probably heard the phrase "friends come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime", which sums up my own friendships pretty well.
  21. I dont think comments like this are fair. Its not just Sikh girls marrying boys of other faiths, there are Sikh boys also marrying girls from other faiths. Heres thread from year back titled: Alarming Rise In Sikh Boys Marrying Hindu Girls http://www.sikhsanga...ng-hindu-girls/ .
  22. oh i get it now. is it too late to laugh at the joke? i think i ruined it.
  23. i dont understand the thread title as I didnt see Shiv Sena or sikhs being mentioned in the video. What the crazy old man is showing is a laughter excercise. heres video of people doing laughter meditation
  24. i think i said it wrong when i said, what "difference would it really make?". I mean along the lines of what would we gain from killing this 78year old (who i heard rumours he has cancer) out on the street in the way that was attempted? Say for example a serial killer murders my family and police be like forget it obviously it would hurt alot that people who can do something dont. but anything I do wont change the fact that my family is dead. its easy to say this, but if it wasnt personal its different story, and in that case IMO I'd be thinking about what i can do so it doesnt happen to anyone else. I dont think I'd go hunting the dude as I'm not the violent type. I think in situation like that I'd be hoping Waheguru will give dish out the Justice whether it be in this lifetime or whenever.
  25. I dont think this thread should be closed. Maybe some people who have been around on this forum have discussed this several times over the years, but others have not really had teh chance to discuss something like this. Yeah maybe threadstarter can go find a 3,4,5 year old thread, but if he has questions who would he ask since alot of old threads are closed and maybe the olderposters are not active anymore? btw I came across this page the other week and thought was pretty good regarding meat issue. http://www.info-sikh.com/PageM2.html
