In response to the Kirpan, here's what the Canadian public has to say. What a Multicultural and accepting place! The fact that Balpreet Singh is born and raised in Canada makes no difference and newspapers like the Ottawa Citizen allow comments like this to appear:

Name: Citizen A

Email: ashamed to be Canadian

Occupation: Accountant

Location: Canada (World's dumping ground)

For God's sake. When are we going to put an end to this and start putting these people in their place? If we went to there country, we would have to follow the rules and customs of their nation, so why is it that when they come here they are not expect to give us the same common curtise? They don't like it here than leave. In this country, accurding to our laws and custums, carring a wepon is a crime and something that is considered intollerable. Yes there are Canadain custums and traditions, but we know little about them, because we allow immagrents and refugees to come here and do as they please. When in Rome do as the Romans do. Every other nation protects their customs, traditions and laws exept Canada. If Shikes are allowed to carry weapons, then I should be allowed to carry a weapon as well. As matter of fact we should be allowed or not allowed to carry weapons. One nation = one set of laws. If I got into fight with one of them, I would use a weapon, because they have one, period

If you move to a different country that is mostly Judeo-Christian and you come from the Middle East or India you must accept that our culture and beliefs do not support transporting a sabre or sword on our person (i.e. body). While Canada has been spared terrorist activities (so far) most travelers on a train or plane live in places where terrorism is a constant threat. I am always amazed that the first thing that many of these people from radically different cultures from ours learn is how to scream discrimination and how to file a lawsuit.

Name: Modeno

Why oh why does it have to be us Canadians who have to kneel when faced with some kind religion? Now as far as I know, Via rail is Canadian, so why should they try to do something regarding someone getting on the train with a dagger strung around the belt? My God! when are we going to wake up and put our pants on and tell these people that if they want to live in Canada, they will have to abide by the laws of the land. Religion was invented by men, so don't tell me that God Almighty told them to wear a dagger at all time! I really wonder what would happen if we tried to do the same things in their country? We would most probably get shot on the spot!

Name: Sean P. Hogan

Occupation: public servant

Just another example of how the immigrants in this country are trying to shove their beliefs down our throats. If you have to wear a dagger as part of your religion, it doesn't say much for the religion. At the same time, they don't care about the safety of passengers, just themselves, so selfish and so uncaring.

Occupation: tech

When are these people going to learn that we have laws in this country that they have to abide by if they wish to live here.

We do not allow citizens to carry weapons, religious or not, end of story.

Whether or not you worship God, Allah, Vishnu or Casper the Friendly Ghost, you will have to do it without a knife, M16 or ground to air missile launcher. If you cannot abide by these rules, there are plenty of medieval middle east countries who can accomodate you.

I was appalled when I came across this on an internet forum. For a Newspaper to allow such hate filled remarks based on prejudices is sickening. This so called “unbiased” journalism is contributing the degradation of our society. Every person who is or has been a victim of a hate crime, whether you be muslim, sikh, Christian, or whatever else can blame it partially on these types of newspapers. Freedom of speech is fine, but to allow comments that you know will lead to tensions betweens communities is unacceptable. It is fine if you want these types of messages on your newspaper if you allow people who are knowledgeable in sikhisim to reply back. What is sad to say is that people who allow this kind of hate to be spread usually do it because they feel the same way. On a side note maybe you want to tell these educated people who have made these comments that it is not even your country to start with. On what bases are you people saying that “these people come to our county”. What makes this more your country then someone who was born and raised here (Which Balpreet Singh is). So maybe “you people” need pick up a text book and realize that the native people were here way before you guys showed up. Maybe you need to take the core lessons of Sikhism and apply them to your lives.

Sikhsim is a faith that follows Guru Granth Sahib ji which on many occasions states the equality of people as god's children. The Kirpan is not a dagger, it is a symbol for truth and justice that a sikh who has been baptized is required to wear. Not for intimidation purposes but to be reminded of their great heritage. To help Sikhs remind themselves to always help the oppressed. Before a Gursikh starts his or her day he/she is required to wake up early and meditate on the name of God. A Sikh is to reflect on the greatness of God and God’s creation. At the end of each prayer session of a Gursikh the words he is required to utter are “Nanak Naam Chardi Kalla, Terai Bhanai Sarbatt da Bhalla” Guru Nanak Dev Ji the first Guru of the Sikhs is asking God to bless humanity. Not just Sikhs, but every single human being regardless of caste, creed or color. A Sikh is required to keep a strict code of conduct which promotes love, equality and justice. Sikhism is a faith that believe love to be the its core principle in every aspect of life.

Here are some quotes from our Gurus. "JIN PREM KIYO TIN HE PRABH PAYO" Guru Gobind Singh Ji. (Only those who love will be able to reach God". Manas ki jaat sabhay Ekhai Pashanbo. Guru Gobind Singh Ji (Reconize all humanity as One). Äval Allah Noor Opaiya Kudrat Kay Sabh Bandhae, Aik Noor Thae Sabh Jag Opaiya Kaun Bhalae Kaun Mandhae.” Bhagat Kabir Jee (First, Allah created the Light; then, by his creative power. He made all mortal beings. From the one light the whole world welled up, so who is good and who is bad). Also Sikhsim is the only non-denominational writing in history. Not only did the sikh Gurus write this scripture but they put in writings from people of other faiths. They did 'not discriminate based on religion they included writing based on the higher truth of spirituality.

I want to let you people know that I am a Sikh youth who has limited knowledge of Sikhism. But I am in the process of letting others more learned Sikhs know about this issue and they will be writing to you soon. You people being the voice for the people have a duty to inform people not contribute to hatred.. Please understand what I have said in this emai,l because if action is not taken to rectify this situation we will hold peaceful protests, flood you with emails and boycott your News Papers.

P.S I am a BORN AND RAISED CANADIAN and DAMN PROUD.

PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS ASAP!!! I BELIEVE THE EMAIL IS sanderson@thecitizen.canwest.com

HERE ARE SOME RESPONSE EMAILS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO USE THESE AS SAMPLES IF YOU WANT.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am all for free speech, and feel very passionately about this, however what your readers are letting on in the free flow of dribble is simply that they have mastered the art of stereotypes. Congratulations. I think we should learn to be better critical thinkers and not be so heated and steamed when it comes to people who are different from what we know to be "normal". Funny thing is its usually our mirror image that we define as normal, and try to fit everyone in that carbon copy mold. Hmmmmmm a bit premature in the mind are we, ehhhh, a tad bit underdeveloped?! Well the moral of the story goes: what we do not know about scares us, and that seems precisely to be what is happening here. What ever happened to tolerance? Hmmm….. someone referred to living in a Judo Christian nation and that outsiders should learn to deal with the mere violation of human rights (OPPRESSION of religious rights) here and there... however they failed to think, would Jesus have wanted me to write such a hate filled email overflowing with a lack of compaction and care for my fellow man, my fellow neighbor, my fellow tax payer (if that makes more sense for this non-Christian-Christian...hmmm is that a word?). Come on PEOPLE lets learn to tolerate each other and grow as a human race and not regulate people’s way of life if it is justifiable and righteous. We do not live in a communist state, nor do we live under a fascist ideology, so my BIG question is, where did all these fascist ideologs come from and how do we come together as a greater human race to stop them?

HERE IS ANOTHER ONE

In reference to the below . . .

I am a white christian born in Canada and I have to say this falls just short of Hate-Media. We should be ashamed to even be letting such trailer trash garbage go to print. These people obviously know nothing about Sikhism because if they did they'd have nothing to say. My good friend is a devout Sikh and always shows the utmost respect for Jesus and my religion. . . . If only we could be as unconditionally loving, peaceful and respectful as the Sikhs . . Instead of glorifying these ignorant people's hate, why don't you do something about it and educate people for the better.

PLEASE COPY PASTE THIS POST TO AS MANY SIKHS OR SIKH SYMPATHIZERS AS YOU CAN.

GuruFateh!

It just shows how ignorant some people are. On one hand they say that religion is man-made but how about the laws that are made in the said countries? Who makes those may I ask? Yep, men. So, they have just invalidated their arguement by saying that. They are saying that men made religion hence men made Sikhi so men made the rule of wearing a Kirpan. Those foolish Canadians are saying why should we accept something that has been made by men. So I ask them why should we follow rules of Canada because they are also made by men!

Religion man-made, THE VERY IDEA! HA! Religion was created by God's messengers who came upon this Earth at various times to put mankind on the right path.

Dasmesh Pita, Guru Gobind Singh made Khalsa in Jujhar Singh's roop and made it compulsary for Sikh's to carry weapons. The great deads carried out by Sikhs is shown in history and this is because we are allowed by religion to carry arms and fight injustice and oppression! I would like to ask these fools (and that is what they are) what state India etc would have been in at this moment in time if it wasn't for the sacrifice of the Sikhs!

Gurbani is a precious gift that was given to the world by the messengers of Waheguru. We should not forget that! That is what is important not what some supposed democratic fools decide to do! These same people say that their rights should be protected in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks but I'd like to pose a question. In the UK, attacks took place on 7/7 most likely due to the illegitame war waged in Iraq. This war went against the principles of Sikhi as stated by Guru Gobind Singh 'Our work is not to instigate a clash or make the first move, ours is to give a fitting response to an atack.' Most of the UK public did not agree to the war in Iraq but was there opinions heard by the so-called democratic British Government? Why don't these people send e-mails to their MP's or whatever they have in Canada and voice concerns about voices of the people in a democratic country not being heard?

If someone is an Amritdhari Sikh, they have to follow the 5 Kakkar's without a shadow of doubt! That means wear your kirpan with pride! It is a symbol of our faith!

May Waheguru bless those people who are involved in yet another struggle for the Sikhs!

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
