To do degh seva, it is necessary to be in Gurmukhi baaNaa and also have done keshi ishnaan.  This must include a hazooriya, which should be wrapped around the face and go up to the nose.  This is the traditional way of doing degh.

Fateh veer ji

If your in bana thats great but if not don't worry because I see a lot of the sewadaars at the gurdwara in english clothes giving out karah prashaad without a hazooriya. As long as you've washed your hands nobody will say anything to you if you want to do the sewa rather the paathi will probably be happy coz a lot of the times in lots of sangat there might not be enough people to give it out. :TH:

Significance of the Hazooria:

Hazooria; hazoor: Being ready; being in presence.

5 Kakaars are the bare minimum and are not the full extent of Khalsa uniform. A hazooria is part of Khalsa uniform. It should be white and past the waist in length.

It is part of the tradition of panj kapare (five garments), comprising dastaar, hazuria, long cholara, kamar-kasaa and kachheraa. Reference to this has been made by Bhai Gurdaas Jee as well.

A hazooria is a sign of humility and that's why when doing ardaas it's grasped. It is a constant reminder of surrendering your mind to your Guru, along with your punj kakaar. A Hazooria is very practicle. It helps you keep succhamta (purity) when during seva or reading bani. If you want to keep your hands clean when scratching face or picking up something, you can use your hazooria.

Hazooria is usually worn by servants as they serve their master. For Sikhs, it similarly symbolizes servitude to the One and Only One True Master - Akal Purakh and Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

While the kamar-kassaa symbolizes the readiness of a Sikh to do some active seva, or jump into battle the Hajooria is mark of a Sikh's readiness to serve Satguru.

waheguru ji ka khalsa, waheguru ji ke fateh

Pyare jio, for basic hygiene reasons a hazzoria is essential and should be used as Singh 132 has stated.

Otherwise virus, colds, flus and other unpleasant things can be transmitted to sangataan via degh. Just because we are sikhs, we should not forget basic food hygiene rules.

In fact, on a bigger subject. I think there is a need for all gurdwara parbandaks to ask their sevadaars to do a basic food hygiene course. Unfortunatley most are not strong enough to convinve other punjbais to do this. These courses only take half a day and are availble in punjabi.

Have you not noticed how many people in Gurdwara do get food poisoning, and the amount of fires and other bad practice happens in gurdwaras. It is not the fault of the bibis who do seva, they just need to be shown basic food hygiene.

We are trying to implement this at our local gurdwara.
