I think Bhai Mardana was born in a family where after birth no kid survived. So When Bhai Mardana was born his mother didn't think

he would survive but Guru Nanak dev ji said "Marda Na" and so Mardana ji didn't die and his name became "Mardana".

bhai mardana was named as marJana (as in "will die") coz as amardeep said that no kid survived very long after birth in his family. but bhai mardana ji didn't die and so later on Guru Nanak renamed him mardana (doesn't die). also note that bhai mardana was 10 years older to Guru Nanak :)

According to janam sakhi, the 1st Sikh of Guru Nanak was Rai Bhullar, who saw a snake covering Gurujee's face from sunlight, and he bowed to Gurujee who was a kid then, as he knew that this kid was a messenger of GOD.

Guru jee was at bhai mardana jees house and mardana jees mum called bhai mardana that guru jee came to seee you .. She called "Mar Jana" and guru asked why she called him by such words.. and then she said.. "Everyone before him died, so we are not keeping our hopes high so we call him Mar jana cauz he probably gonna die anyway".. Guru Jee then Said.. Bebe jee. "Eh nahey "Marda Na". From that day.. bhai sahib was called Bhai Mardana jee

Mardana jee family was Muslim.. but it doesn't matter cauz before guru jees time.. everyone was either muslim or hindu..

Here is a kicker. Most non-Sikh heroes of Sikh history have been Muslims. Bhai Mardana, Sai Miya Mir, Pir Bhikhan Shah, Pir Budhu Shah, Nabi Khan, Wali Khan, there was one guy called Keema (also name of a dish...food i mean) who had the saubhaag of having chhote sahibzaade and mata gujri stay at his place for a night, then we have the nawab of malerkotla who walked out of wazir khan's court as a protest against wazir khan's orders to execute the chhote sahibzaade. To this day, his estate is well guarded in Punjab, and always atleast one muslim from malerkotla is member of Punjab constituency. Also, during the bloodbath of 1947 when Hindus and Sikhs on one side and Muslims on the other were at war, no Muslim from malerkotla was killed by Sikhs, on the other hand, i think they were protected. i think even maharaja ranjit singh's bodyguards were Muslims. Baba Farid and Kabirjee are other examples, although there is still controversy about bhagat kabirjee as some say he was born to a brahmin woman who abandoned him and so he was raised by muslims (could be propaganda).

Then on the other hand we have people like the mughal emperors jahangir, aurangzeb and farrukhsiyar, governors like zakariya khan and mir mannu, invaders like ahmad shah abdali and nadir shah.
