Shabads Being Remixed

Waheguru ji ka khalsa

Waheguru ji ki Fateh !

I have just been listening to an album called Punjab Lounge. It is mainly lounge music mixed in a chill out mood style. All was fine till I came to track 8. It is called Mooli but it is actually a remix of Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji Srinagar Vale's shabad.

"Dar Mande thande darbar tuj bin surat kare ko meri.

Khol Kapat Gur Maliya Nanak Har Sangat Meet"

It is not mixed with any other lyrics and is on its own. I was quite shocked to hear this.

Now some questions/comments/concers

1. Question Do the mixer DJ needs to get permission from the holding record company in this I think it is T-Series.

If yes, then does the singer/artisist/ragi has an understanding of this.

The point I am trying to make is that has someone just remixed it or really gone to check with the holding company (In this case Prob T-Series).

2. Concern: If this is being remixed in such a way, what is stopping from this CD being played in clubs/bars and other places.

3. Comment: As much as I appreicate that kirtan should be done all over and not being narrow minded about its remix. It still raises a question of the value of Gurbani being used in such a way

Apprecaite sensible comments pls.

Thanks

Tony, I think you have some valid points. I have never been a big fan of re-mixed dhadi vaars mainly due to the uncomfortable feeling of the vaars being played in the club scene, I have often wondered about Shabads being used in the same format. In the eratic club/bar environment sometimes misguided youth cry out the Sikh jaikaray or wave the nishan sahib, mistakenly thinking it is all a show of honour and dignity. Maybe in their ill-advised and erroneous way, the DJs think they are showing an appreciation of what they feel being “Sikh” is all about.

Sikh elders, jathebhandhia and people like you and me should take on the responsibility of speaking to these DJs/youth and educate them about what Gurbani means to a Sikh. Collectively we should approach the producers of this album and make clear the sensivity of the issue and express our concerns of Gurbani being “unintentionally” manipulated by them.

Your the real joke mate, you are so intollorent! Whats your problem why do you feel that every single problem in sikhi is due to the Hindus. If hinduism was so BAD dont you think maharaj Shri Akaal Purukh would have wiped it out?

You have absolutly no nimarta, therefore you should feel ashamed to call yourself a sikh, as sikhisms golden rule is tollorence, only after the boundry is broken should the sword be taken up. You are a joke and a stain on Sikhi!

youth should stay away from you, as you r kausangat!

My two rupees worth...

I think we need to distinguish between dhadhi and gurbani. Whilst I think nothing is wrong with remixing the former, something Tigerstyle has done very well, doing the same to the latter seems wrong. Don't misunderstand me though, I'm not saying that we should not experiment with bani on a musical level. If you hear some of the stuff coming from the goray Sikhs in America it is really beautiful, soul inspiring and deeply spiritual and they experiment with different instruments such as guitars. In fact remember that the common bajaa that is used in Gurdwaras are in fact a European innovation as the instrument came to the Panjab via Europeans (it is an adapted harmonium).

But using bani for dance tracks - something seems very wrong with that especially if we imagine it being played in clubs.
