Families of Beant's assassins left shattered

Patiala, July 30

As the assassins of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh wait for the pronouncement of sentence by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, their families have been left destitute and shattered.

Harnek Singh, father of Dilawar Singh, the human bomb who killed Beant Singh, told TNS at his residence in the Guru Nanak Nagar locality here today: "I cannot term the act of my son as right."

"Many hardliners are calling him a martyr. They may have collected crores in his name. However, none of them has ever visited the family for the past 12 years. They have being observing his death anniversary in foreign countries but nobody has taken the trouble to address the problems of affected families," he said.

"Our family has survived just because I was a government employee in Punjabi University, Patiala. I am drawing a pension that helps us make both ends meet."

He said Dilawar Singh was a jolly person. He never gave an indication of his allegiance to hardliners. "Just five days before he committed the act, I sought his consent for marriage. He, however, told me to wait for two months. The family was shocked when five days after the assassination of Beant Singh, we came to know that the person who acted as human bomb was Dilawar Singh," he said.

Dilawar Singh's elder brother works for a private company. His family remains aloof without interacting much with people in the colony.

Gurmeet Singh, another convict, was an engineering student when he became part of the plot to assassinate Beant Singh. His father Jaswinder Singh, who was a Punjabi University employee, died two years ago in an accident.

The ailing mother and physically challenged sister of Gurmeet Singh now stay in their house in Guru Nanak Nagar. Both of them are now surviving on the family pension.

Hardly anyone visits them these days, say neighbours. Both of them are concerned about the sentence to be pronounced on Gurmeet Singh.

The family of Lakhwinder Singh, another convict, is shattered. His house in Guru Nanak Nagar is in poor shape. None of his family members now stays in Patiala.

The house has been rented out. His father Darshan Singh, a sub-inspector with the Punjab Armed Police, has retained a room in the house. He comes here for a few days to collect the rent. The tenants said the family was under immense tension. One of the sisters of Lakhwinder Singh tried to grab the house.

Their father, however, disowned her and her husband. His mother died in 2004 and his father now stays alone.

SGPC chief for life term to Hawara

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 3

Breaking his silence on the death sentence to Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh in the Beant Singh assassination case, SGPC president Avtar Singh here today said the provocation for the attack was connected to religious and political sentiments of the people.

He said the two accused did not have any personal reasons for the act. He further said the atrocities against Sikhs, which drive the youth to take such a step, should have been seriously looked into before awarding death penalty. The SGPC chief added that in view of all this the death sentence should be converted to life term for the two accused.

Hawara, Balwant find support in KAC

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 4

The Khalsa Action Committee (KAC) has expressed solidarity with Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh, who have been awarded death penalty for eliminating former Chief Minister Beant Singh, by offering ardas for them at Akal Takht here today.

The programme was organised by the KAC and the ardas performed by Jathedar, Takht Damdama Sahib, Balwant Singh Nandgarh. However, Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti, who was present at Akal Takht, chose to stay away from the function.

Addressing the gathering, Manjit Singh Calcutta, a veteran SGPC member, flayed SAD and other leaders for having failed to stand up against the state repression. He eulogised both convicts for the courage they had shown while discharging their duty towards the Panth.

Bhai Mohkam Singh and Kanwar Pal Singh, convener and spokesperson of the KAC, respectively, said the death penalty awarded would further alienate Sikhs from the Indian state.

Naraien Singh, Surinder Pal Singh and Parmjit Singh Gazi (all members of the KAC) and Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra were among those present at the function.

Jailbreak Case

For now, Hawara not to be taken out of jail

Swati Sharma

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 7

The Burail Jail authorities today expressed their inability to allow convict Jagtar Singh Hawara to attend the jailbreak trial at the district courts here. According to the jail manual, Hawara, who has been awarded death sentence, is not allowed to move out of the jail premises.

In view of recent protests in the city against the death sentence to Hawara and Balwant Singh, taking Hawara out of the jail for court hearings can be dangerous.

Defence counsel S.S. Bawa said, "The High Court will first go through the evidence and then confirm Hawara's death sentence, so the reply says that till then he cannot be moved out of the jail as per the jail manual."

The defence had given an application to the CJM on August 4, 2007, to allow Hawara to attend the trial of the jailbreak case at the district courts.

Meanwhile, the tunnels used by the accused to flee the jail are still unfilled. Additional IG prisons and jail superintendent Navjot Randhawa said, "We cannot not fill up the tunnels without the permission of the judiciary. An application in that connection is pending in the court" Hawara and Balwant, who have been awarded death sentence, couldn't be kept in special barracks made for such convicts because of their proximity to one of the tunnels.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
