The relatives of those involved in the Beant Singh assassination were not permitted to meet those convicted at Burail Jail, today. Emotions ran high as they struggled to see the face of their dear ones whose fate was decided more than a decade after the trial began.

However, it has always been problematic for the relatives to meet those in custody. The mother of Lakhwinder Singh, one of the convicts, passed away on May 3, 2004. However, he was not allowed to attend the funeral.

“Initially, the authorities gave their go ahead for the same, but they backtracked at the last moment,” lamented Hardev Singh, Lakhwinder’s brother.

An aunt of Lakhwinder, one of the convicted in the Beant Singh assassination case, at Burail Jail.

Jan Singh, the brother-in-law of accused Lakwinder Singh, said, “Though we were allowed to enter the jail, the police didn’t let us enter the courtroom.” Jan Singh has come all the way from Ludhiana to meet his relative.

The situation was worse for the sister of Jagtar Singh Hawara - the mastermind in the case. She was denied entry on the jail premises while the others were let in. Baljit is also suspected of helping Hawara, Jagtar Singh Tara and Shamsher Singh dig the tunnel at Burail jail. It was alleged that she had arranged the car for the three to flee.

When questioned about this, she said, “They are mere allegations and nothing has been established as yet. During police custody, I was tortured both mentally and physically and I have come here only for my brother.”

Dev Singh, uncle of Jagtar Singh Hawara

For the children of Shamsher Singh, who was also convicted, the journey back home to Palsora was sadder as they could not meet their father.

The wife of another convict, Naseeb Singh, Avtar Kaur said: “I don’t know why we could not meet him despite making it in time.”

A radical group, Khalsa Action Committee, turned up at the jail premises but was disappointed after the pronouncement of the order.

They claimed that they had come to show solidarity with the convicts and later dispersed peacefully. The members of the group said: “We hope that the higher court will eventually take all aspects of the case into consideration and resolve the matter in a truly humane manner.”

A brief altercation

A delegation of radical Sikhs, led by former bureaucrat Gurtej Singh, had a brief altercation with jail authorities as they wanted to enter the jail premises. However, the jail authorities did not allow them to proceed. “We are here to express solidarity with the accused,” Singh, who was accompanied by some members of Khalsa Action Committee (KAC).

Although convicted yesterday (27th July 07), the court was supposed to give the sentence today (28th July 07), but this has been postponed now as well.

Babbar Jagtar Singh Jee Hawara (who was first to enter the court) yesterday is said to have greeted the judge with "Vaheguroo Jee Kaa Khalsa, Vaheguroo Jee Kee Phateh" and was in high spirits. Balwant Singh also convicted who entered the court next shouted "Khalistan Zindabad, Dilawar Singh Amar Rahe"...

We must all do Ardhaas for the Chardhee Kalaa of these great Gursikhs, such as a GEM of the Panth like Babbar Jagtar Singh Jee Hawara!

Vaheguroo Jee Kaa Khalsa, Vaheguroo Jee Kee Phateh!!!

Defence Lawyers Roughed Up

Beant case sentencing postponed

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 28

The pronouncement of the quantum of sentence in the Beant Singh assassination case was deferred to Monday following the alleged manhandling and roughing up of defence lawyers by the Burail jail staff and police today. ind5.jpg

The defence counsel told the mediapersons, waiting outside the jail premises, that they had boycotted the proceedings before the special CBI court as the treatment being meted out to them was not appropriate and in gross violation of the established norms of decency.

Defence lawyers A.S. Chahal and Arvind Thakur alleged that the jail staff misbehaved with them after frisking them in a completely uncivil manner. One defence lawyer, whose name was duly entered in the jail list, was reportedly told to move out of the court on the ground that he was not carrying his identity card.

"Given the circumstances, we felt it was best to boycott the court proceedings and expressed our inability to argue the case," the lawyers said.

Meanwhile, an undaunted CBI counsel, S.K. Saxena, refused to comment on the defence lawyers' allegations. He told the mediapersons that as the defence lawyers had boycotted the proceedings, the sentence would be pronounced on Monday at 11.30 am. He said: "We have demanded death penalty for the accused facing serious charges."

Meanwhile, Navjot Singh's counsel N.K. Minhas said a CBI team had taken his client to New Delhi at 6 am today. Navjot was acquitted yesterday. A warrant issued in 1995 against him by a Delhi Sessions court is pending and he has been taken to New Delhi in that connection.

The special court of R K Sondhi was all set to deliver the quantum of punishment to be given to the six men who were convicted yesterday, after an 11-year-long trial in the Beant Singh assassination case.

Jagtar Singh Hawara, Balwant Singh, Shamsher Singh, Lakhwinder Singh and Gurmeet Singh were held guilty under Section 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. Another accused, Naseeb Singh, was convicted under the Explosives Substances Act.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
