why surrender to your parents wishes whn you know thy r wrong??

I dont know man some people give in because of guilt/family honour or something then u get those classic uphappy marrages and sometimes parents support you, thats life.

one thing thats great about arranged marriages is if it goes bad u can blame your parents because they arranged it LOL.gif ANYWAY i dont think society plays much of a role its the family who puts on the pressure.

^^ wake up. why do you think family puts pressure on you? rolleyes.gif its cause of what's considered as "norm" in society. the fear is, "hai rabba, if we dont do it, what would peeople say"

i stand corrected.......yea ur right also goes for the alcohol and meat at weddings thing.......man it pisses me off even religious families cave into THAT one........

i personally think that nowadays people lack knowledge in sikhi. That is why we look for a more westernised reason to marry an indivdual rather than the true reason of uniting your soul with another towards guru ji pray.gif (i blame media to beacuse it is a huge influence on a persons mind grin.gif

date... depends on wha ur def'n of date is... i tink i's okay for 2 people who are tinkin bout marriage to get together and go out... talk... get to know eachother... i tink i's okay ONLY when they are serious bout marriage and are talking with a potential marriage partner and are looking to pursue towards marriage...

otherwise, the other type of 'dating' where u jus go around n whatever... i don't think tha's rite..

gettin to know the other person, in my opinion, is not only rite, but i's required... obviously not on a physical level, but a mental and spiritual connection shud be made before..

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

thats not good!

go out? talk? that is dating!!!

sikhs should not be dating

leave it to your parents

they will find a suitable match for you.

Hey well although parents are usually right, this matching up business doesn't always work.

My parents matched me up with a boy last year and all the people who we talked to about it beforehand said, he's not very good looking but he's a very good boy, good family, your daughter will be happy there. Now i'm more of a personality person that looks so I didn't mind him being not so good looking and after a 20min conversation with him, i decided after a talk with my parents to go ahead with it.

then a few weeks before we were due to get officially engaged, i was walking home from uni one day and crossing at the traffic lights, his car was stopped at the lights and he was sitting there with some friends, but when he saw me he started to try to hide his face.

Then i started havign serious doubts about this, i thought i don't really know this guy at all, why was he trying to hide from me i don't understand. So i spoke to my brother about this, and being overprotective as they are they got a few of their friends to basically stalk this guy for two days.

Turns out hes got a girlfriend, but becuase shes black he couldn't tell his parents and was going ahead with it only to keep them happy, and wouldve kept his girlfriend on the side. Oh and he also drank alcohol like it's water and according to my brother's friends who followed him to this pub, said he got very aggressive after a few drinks and almost started a fight!

Im so glad i found this out before i ruined my life! I think you need to know the person your marrying becuase it is a LIFE LONG commitment. Not dating, but talking to your proposed life partner is very important!

Oh and another thing we learnt is that when you ask people what so-and-so's son is like they may be lying, like this other guy my parents tried to set me up with. Actually i'm really naive and i spoke to this guy for 2 hours and i thought this guy totally understands me im very happy with this, and then my brothers did a bit of digging (after what happened last time) and found out that this guy smokes pot! he was just very good at pulling the wool over my eyes!

So parents CAN get it wrong!

As for the question of the topic, personally im happy with a 70/30 split on personality and looks! there has to be some physical attraction, but what i find is that, someone who you would say is not very good looking, suddenly seems alot more good looking if they have a really great personality.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
