Yuvraj sets Durban on fire with six sixes

DH News Service, Durban:

The left-handed Punjab batsman whacked England's Stuart Broad for six maximums in a Group E match in the Twenty20 World Cup in Durban on Wednesday.

India’s Yuvraj Singh became the second batsman after South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs to smash six sixes in an over in international cricket. The left-handed Punjab batsman whacked England’s Stuart Broad for six maximums in a Group E match in the Twenty20 World Cup in Durban on Wednesday.

Yuvraj managed to perform the rare feat in the 19th over of the innings and Broad’s fourth over. First ball was a soaring hit that went out of the park.Second six was not as brutal as the earlier one. A wristy flick off his legs went over long leg. Third ball produced the same result, a six over long-off. Broad changed the strategy and went around the wicket for the fourth ball, but Yuvraj hit a full toss with a hit-me label on it over square point.

Yuvraj did not disappoint the roaring crowd as he larruped the fifth ball over midwicket, leaving Broad a trembling wreck.

Sixth ball -- Can he or not? Yuvraj answered the question with a thundering shot over long-on. The sixth six also brought him the fifty in just 12 balls, the fastest fifty in Twenty20 cricket.

For the record, Gibbs smashed Holland’s Dan van Bunge for six sixes in the last World Cup, while Garry Sobers off Malcolm Nash and Ravi Shastri off Thilak Raj did in first class matches.
