Whats The Story Behind Your Name?

Mines really boring, i asked my mum why they called me Harpreet, apparently it's because it sounded nice!

But this is a good excuse to ask, does anyone know what my name means, some people have said it means to love everyone Har - Preet, but others have said it means to love god...

well, my Hukamnama came as a Oorhaa, but they were going to ask a certain Mahpurash who was Ik Mik with Vaheguroo (I wont say who) what to name me.

So he told my parents to name me Uttam Singh, and then he did an ardaas, he told us that it was accepted in Sachkhand .

I was born in a Hindu family. My first name was that of a Hindu deity which was kept maybe for a few days. After that there was news that another kid of the same name had died in our neighborhood, so out of superstition my family changed my name. My cousin who was from Canada (and whose mom was Sikh) had a friend by my former Hindu name (I always knew I had some sort of relation with Canada), and he named me.

On June 6, 2004, on the 20th anniversary of the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib, I was at the Shaheedi Samagam in Chicago. It was here that the Singhs finally gave me my Sikh name. The letter was "M", and there were many options, including Manveer, Manpreet, etc. One was Mengha Singh, but one Singh joked that I would never be able to go to India with that kind of name. So we called up one penji in California (who is the sole reason why I got to meet so much sangat in the first place) and woke her up. She suggested Mehtab, to which the sangat agreed to immediately.

It was the day Sri Darbar Sahib was attacked, it was the name of a Singh who had avenged the beadbi of Sri Darbar Sahib 200 years ago.

My parents respected Baba Ajit Singh (Coventry aka Ajit Darbar) and so before I was born they asked him and he said I would be a boy and to call me Bikram.

My parents also respected this guy called "Raja Sahib"; he has a Gurdwara in India near our pind that kinda acts as a dog sanctuary (loads of dogs everywhere), so they asked him before I was born and he said Bikram aswell.

I ask my mum if we asked from Guru Ji but shes not too sure :closedeyes:

So anyway my Dad cant spell so on the birth certificate they wrote "Bickrma" something along those lines, by the time I went to school my dad had got slightly better at spelling and registered me as "Bicram" and this unique mis-spelt name has stuck ...need to do something about that birth certificate though

What does Bickram/Vikram/Bicram mean?

I know Its named after some Indian Raja agesss ago in whos era a calendar was invented or something. But there must be another meaning other than the name of a calendar?

no sir that is the only reason of name Bikram . He was the brother of a famous nath Bhanger Nath. bikram is one of the most famous kings of bharat. cool name.

MY STORY IS QUITE INTERESTING.

still i dnt know the reason behind my name JAGJEET SINGH, but its means one who rules over world or like one has victory over world.

BUT AS GURU SAHIB SAID MANN JEETEY JAG JEET

I can only prove my name when i can controal my mind my mann and my name keeo encouraging me to prove myself. My daadi ji gave this name to me when GURU SAHIB GAVE HUKAM OF LETTER J

I remember that they wrote 4-5 names on parchian and folded them and choosed one and it was JAGJEET SINGH.

but my nick name SUNNY is the thought of my mom's cousin sister ( my maasi).

those days phones were not common ( 1986) and my masi wrote a letter to us and told to keep my name SUNNY, coz during that time a film of SUUNY DEOL was super hit.

and after four years when my brother born, then GURU SAHIB gave us letter M. and my daadi and other family members again i think used the same paarchian way and he got the name MANJEET SINGH lolllllllllll
