Is Any Religious Song Kirtan?

Sorry if I offend anyone by stating ‘song’, but I get confused over the difference and what is classed as ‘kirtan’ ‘shabad’ and other songs which are not from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib (are these simply referred to as religious songs?).

i have heard songs which are religious, but more like songs eg jazzy b, or hans raj hans, obviously these are not kirtan and can quite easily be distinguished but what about songs from the shaheedi albums, these are songs im guessing but can they be sung at the gurdawara?

also there is a song by mata pritam kaur called khanda wahylia amrit - is this kirtan and can this be sung at the gurdwara?

most if not all gurdwaras allow kabits about sikhi to be sung in gurdwaras. i have heard dhadis talk about Heer Ranjha on stage and link it to the subject etc.

obvioulsy you are not gona get the same impact cos of the musical accompaniment to the lyrics that you would get from the bhangra singers.

i remember once a guy on the stage said that only gurbani should be sung from stage, and some people had a go at him.

remember that there were 52 poets in Guru Darbar, who all recited thier works in Darbar. Now that isnt gurbani is it, but its along the lines of gurmat so it was allowed.
