Each weapon has its own damage level and ability to seriously hurt (depending on the mindset and skill of the user). Most people are untrained in weapons arts and therefore neglect the implications of using a weapon in a fight.

Firstly if you draw a weapon (including your kirpan) in public, you are liable to be prosecuted, if you use it and hurt someone then the implications become much more serious leading to criminal procedings. You kill someone and then you'll obviously be facing some jail time unless you can without reasonable doubt prove that your life was in danger. Beyond that there will be a knock on effect on the Sikh community regarding the carrying of kirpans. Up until now there have been considerations and acceptance of the kirpan, if usage of kirpans becomes a common occurance then these laws of freedom will have to be changed.

The best idea would be train in some martial art that teaches you street defence for a start, most thugs and crooks on the street are not trained fighters and have little or no skill, a few months of hard training can put you set for most situations in the street. Resorting to using your kirpan at the first instance you feel threatends is not the solution, even if thats what you do, it is likely that you can be manhandled and be stabbed with your own weapon.

If there is any weapon to be used, its your brain, the best form of self defence is not being in a dangerous situation in the first place, be aware of your surroundings and dont walk with your head down or up in the sky, keep an aura of confidence and that will deter most thugs.

Before taking any action, think in your head the implications that it will have.

Gurbar Akaal's comments are the best explantation I've read regarding the scenario! There's no simple yes or no answer to this.

Even though we wear Shastars, we should be equipped to defend ourselves without having to use them at the street level as Gurbar has said “minimum force” is required to get the job done. This being the most likely situation. Even in the eyes of the law minimum force constitutes a slap or a punch back etc. Using a Shastar has wider consequences with far reaching implications for the community…..but I still think upnai are hopeless fighters. I grappled with a “Gatka Ustad” a few weeks ago. No offence to Bhai Sahib or ant gatka practitioner, and I made my views known to him after to be honest and open, all I can say is if this is the art form that builds the backbone of Khalsa Warrior Culture I‘m very very disappointed. `

With great power comes great responsibility

Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962) - The first Spider-MAN story. :)

Anyways, not much a kirpan can do against a Smith & Wesson aimed straight at your chest!

I think this is a really hard question and yeh there aint a yes or no answer to it. I think only amritdhari sikhs can really tell you because our actions at certain situations would be different if we were part of the khalsa e.g someone who has not taken amrit can say yeh i will use my kirpan but only an amirtdhari sikh knows the real importance and value of a kirpan and i dont think he/she would use kirpan just because they felt threatned. Its easy to say sitting behind a computer that i would use it or not.

Peace

one must think a billion times b4 pullin it out bcuz it will surly start a huge uproar between the government if pulled at the wrong time and they'll start thinking twice themselves about keeping kirpans legal.

like above said

it comes with great responsibility.

use proper discretion just like the police in canada. reasonable grounds and reasonable force or else ur in deep dodo.
