Different Definiton Of Bani

but i came across another definiton for this tuk of bani

maaee maagath thrai lobhaavehi ||

You beg from Maya, lured by the three qualities

whats the sangats veechar on this??

imho the second one is more accurate word for word, that second sentence from the first translation, "the mind wants..." isnt really in that thuk at all :S

They both say the same thing except the first translation goes more in depth. If you read the whole Shabad, it will make sense.

Gurbani veechar - Great Post!!! We should have more of this - gets everyone's thinking caps on and hopefully will not lead to slander or any of the other distintigrations that posts tend to fall into.

I am no Bhai Nand Lal (that man was amazing - not only could he perform veechar of our Gurbani, he stood before the Mughal court at Delhi and outshone the greatest Mullahs and Qazis in Hindostan with his veechar of the Qoran).

Mai magat trai lobhaveh

Mai = The mother

Magat = adjective meaning desirable / pleasurable

Trai = three

Lobhaveh = To covet

So I would translate it as "The desirous Mother covets the three"

My question would therefore be 'what are the three? And who is the Mother?'

?Three senses

?Three traesures

?Mother meaning a supposedly virtuous person in society's eyes

Please sangat jee - add to this post and give your opinions. Has anyone studied at the Taksal or any other Gursikhi instituation in order to enlighten us further.

I think japmans right, one is mother the other is maya, and Jangal Da's on the right track as well.

The source for both is MAYA, as guru sahib says:

qRY gux dIsih mohy mwieAw ]

thrai gun dheesehi mohae maaeiaa ||

Those who are controlled by the three qualities are attached to Maya.

Bhai Sahib Singh translates that tuk as

mwieAw mMgdw mMgdw qUM qRYguxI mwieAw ivc Ps irhw hYN

There's many tuks mentioning "the three qualities" or tre gun:

qRY gux ibiKAw AMDu hY mwieAw moh gubwr ]

thrai gun bikhiaa a(n)dhh hai maaeiaa moh gubaar ||

In the corruption of the three qualities, there is blindness; in attachment to Maya, there is darkness.
