Sitting in his den, the lion prepares the betel leaves, and the muskrat brings the betel nuts.

Going from house to house, the mouse sings the songs of joy, and the turtle blows on the conch-shell. ||2||

The son of the sterile woman goes to get married, and the golden canopy is spread out for him.

He marries a beautiful and enticing young woman; the rabbit and the lion sing their praises. ||3||

Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints - the ant has eaten the mountain.

The turtle says, ""I need a burning coal, also."" Listen to this mystery of the Shabad. ||4||6||

:umm: sums up exactly how I felt when reading this Shabad too.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji may be describing the effect of worshipping Akaal Purakh. So the animals/images would be metaphors for the way things change when Guru Ji's Grace has been realised, and the way a person changes when they become a true Gurmukh.

Our minds are like the elephant (drunk with ego/lust), the oxen (who always needs beaten to get it to move), the crow (who thinks of himself as very clever). But after becoming devoted to Guru Ji, the mind develops pure love. (The donkey was stubborn and stupid but the mind no longer is, instead it dances to the tune of God's love. Even the great water buffalo now attaches its mind to Guru Saheb.) Everything has given up its desire/ego/lust/cleverness.

raajaa raam kakareeaa barae pakaaeae, kinai boojhanehaarai khaaeae||

Guru Ji has blessed us with this divine knowledge. The King of creation has cooked the barae (cakes) but the world mistakes it for poison/bitterness (kakareeaa). Only those spiritually awakened souls eat it and find the taste sweet - only the fortunate Gurmukhs utilise this knowledge and revel in it.

The mind has given up kingliness and aggression (the lion instead prepares the betel nuts) and the rat abandons its greediness. The turtle/tortoise abandons its fear of the outside world and instead of hiding in its shell blows the horn with confidence. The mouse similarly sings God's praises to the world. The mind is set free from its entanglements and is liberated through Guru Ji's blessing.

I don't know how accurate the translations are with regards to the next two lines (bans ko pooth beeaahan..) as there doesn't seem to be any mention of sterility? Someone please correct me if there is. The woman Bhagat Ji talks of could be Maya's son, who abandons his dual-mindedness and sin, instead marrying a pure daughter/virgin. The whole world blesses this union.

Bhagat Ji says that even the tiny ant has managed to conquer the mountain. It has overcome its ignorance and instead has adopted humility and true knowledge. (Mahan Kosh says that angaar here doesn't mean ember, but instead means atamgyaan.) Basically the Gurmukh who has instilled patience and virtue into his heart now encourages others who are searching for truth to do the same ,and as a result spreads the light of Guru Ji's knowledge.

No doubt someone who actually knows what they are talking about will now come and give a completely different angle on this intruiging Shabad : )

this shabad is on ang 477 og guru sahib ji, in Faridkot wala teeka this shabad is explained on page

1526 of PDF FILE , kABEER SAHIB JI normally explains many complex issues with metaphors and

satires , this shabad is fine example , the Feel (elephant ) is our ego, balas (the bull) our laziness

and the crow is our pseudo intellect .the donkey is our Kaami man which gets transformed into

proper person after wearing cholas of shame, and kakareas are our worldly wikaars which are

turned into bareys (pakoras ) of Bhaktee by the grace of god( raja Ram)

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!

    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
