lets be logical about it. Periods is just blood, if you had a wound and covered that wound with a plaster are u dirty??? No one is gonna say you cannot come gurdwara or that you cannot pray if you had a cut. There is nothing wrong with blood and likewise there is nothing wrong with periods. People are just worried about leaking and say u make things dirty when u leak but if you look after ureself then u shouldn't leak.

As far as I know - only Hindu's and Muslims say their women are dirty at that time....Sikhs are better than that and see no problem! Do seva and simran no matter what!

Fateh Jee - Vaaheguroo.......we are not muslims (no attack) - whether girls are on their period or not - how and why should it stop us from doing Paat? What is the difference between the cycle of blood leaving the body every month and a human urinating and excreting everyday? they are all extracts from the body. Anyone who says that a woman should not be allowed to do Paat (from a Gotkaa Saahb etc) or go to the Gurdvara should re-consider what they think as Siree Guroo Granth Sahib Jee says

BrIAY hQu pYru qnu dyh ]

bhareeai hathh pair than dhaeh ||

When the hands and the feet and the body are dirty,

pwxI DoqY auqrsu Kyh ]

paanee dhhothai outharas khaeh ||

water can wash away the dirt.

mUq plIqI kpVu hoie ]

mooth paleethee kaparr hoe ||

When the clothes are soiled and stained by urine,

dy swbUxu leIAY Ehu Doie ]

dhae saaboon leeai ouhu dhhoe ||

soap can wash them clean.

BrIAY miq pwpw kY sMig ]

bhareeai math paapaa kai sa(n)g ||

But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin,

Ehu DopY nwvY kY rMig ]

ouhu dhhopai naavai kai ra(n)g ||

it can only be cleansed by the Love of the Name.

Just becuase it says urine doesnt necessarily mean Maaraaj is talking wholly on urine. Humans have several releases; urine, poo, sweat blood etc etc.

We are supposed to simply wash and continue:

jil mil kwieAw mwjIAY BweI BI mYlw qnu hoie ]

jal mal kaaeiaa maajeeai bhaaee bhee mailaa than hoe ||

Scrubbing with water, the body can be cleaned, O Siblings of Destiny, but the body becomes dirty again.

When a woman is on her period she obviously knows to be respectfully clean, so when she is to do Paat - in blunt sense the Gotka Saahb is no where near her monthly period - so how does it affect her doing Paat? It doesnt. In regards to being on your period and going to the Gurdvara - girls naturally know that they need to keep extra pads with them and use them when needed - going to the Gurdvara is not going to make the Gurdvara polluted. What the Gurdvara gets polluted with is the filth in our minds, tongues, eyes, ears etc.

I heard in a Katha once (dont remember the Kathaa Vaa'chks name now) but what happened was this man was using cow pat (goh'haa) for the floor of his kitchen to like make as sort of flooring to it (punjabi style concrete thingy). Now Siree Guroo Nanak Dev Jee and Bhaee Mardhaanaa Jee we on one of their travels and they stopped for the night. Siree Guroo Nanak Dev Jee said to Bhaee Mardhaanaa Jee lets eat - problem was though they needed balun (wood) to make the fire.

Siree Guroo Nanak Dev Jee asked Bhaee Mardhaanaa Jee to go the house nearby (where the man was making his flooring) and ask for wood. Bhaee Mardhaanaa Jee did as he was told and ran over into the mans house and started asking. The man went FURIOUS!!! literally started shouting proper swearing at Bhaee Mardhaanaa Jee and start chasing his with a peice of wood with fire on the end - Bhaee Mardhaanaa Jee ran out of his house and straight to Siree Guroo Nanak Dev Jee. He didnt even know what he had done.

Siree Guroo Nanak Dev Jee asked the man to stop and asked him what was the problem? (Maaraaj is Jaanee'jaan (all - knowning) - he knew what was happening - but he asked to set out the lesson and teaching). The man said this man (Bhaee Mardhaanaa Jee) has ruined my kitchen - he has brought his dirty feet into my holy clean kitchen - I had just finished doing it (the concrety thingy).

Do you know what Siree Guroo Nanak Dev Jee said to him - he asked him your concerte thingy is made from cow pat (cow poo) you lather it all over your floor and you then call it holy - but now that a human who has the abilty to keep himself clean comes into your kitchen with supposidly dirty feet you are saying it is polluted...

The man realised the Truth. Cleaning the body etc is essential - practical and spritiual reasons - they can be done accordingly but such cleansing should not stop our spritiual growth. The story may have been told wrong by me so am sorry its been quite a while since i heard it so if i've told it wrong...you know - but you get the moral i hope?

Our job is to keep ourselves clean and importantly clean the filth of our minds.

igAwin mhw ris nweIAY BweI mnu qnu inrmlu hoie ]5]

Bathing in the supreme essence of spiritual wisdom, O Siblings of Destiny, the mind and body become pure. ||5||

p.s. as for the issue about tampons or pads - bhenjee's please stick to pads as mentioned before it is safer, keeping blood inside you that is naturally supposed to leave the body should be released as soon as possible. We may not realise its affect on us now but when we are older we COULD experience problems. Also, in very plain terms Gursikhs should limit their touching and looking at private areas as kaljug can strike at any time and you may be attacked by Kaam. Instead of us regreating afterwards stick to pads by which you dont even have to touch or see your private area.

Just my views - thank you!

Please refrain from posting such meaningless and nonsensical threads here. You should be directing such questions to the bibis in your family and not discussing such an extremely private matter with complete strangers in the cyberspace.

Moreover, please bear in mind that this is a family oriented website and the primary purpose of this foum is to discuss about Gurmat and sikhi related matters.I am disgusted to see too many sex and intimacy related threads on here.It shows where our younger generation is headed.

OK we really need a BIBYAAN SECTION ONLY controlled by bibi admins.. :umm: :o

but back on the topic - i havent really heard that tampons are not gurmat neither have I ever heard a amrit dhari bhenji saying so. But generally there are many risks using tampons. Plus they dont really work as well as normal pads. you still end up having a high chance of leaking more through them, they're more unreliable especially wen you want to go gurdwara without leaking. As for going gurdwara whilst you are on your period and using a tampon most gurdwara toilets dont have facilities for disposing tampons/pads, so sticking to pads is easier as tampons you have to no matter what change it after a few certain hours before infection or TSS occurs.

Impurity and Women

Sunday 23rd October, 2005

Singhnee's Corner Staff Writer

(KP) -

One day I was sitting with my aunty ji whom I respected very much and thought she knew more than me about Sikh way of life. Well what happened was, she randomly started talking about women and their menses. She said it was a curse for women. She told my sister and me a story about how we women were cursed. I laughed because few weeks ago another panji/sister had just told me during Asa di // meaning of the Gurbani which is discussed in one of the next sections. I didn’t say anything at that time, because I my self was new to the path, and felt uncomfortable arguing with an older person. The story she told us was passed down by my aunt’s mother and what made it more interesting was that my aunt’s mother was amritdhari. Then it made sense why my aunt took the story so seriously, without ever considering other sources to find out the truth.

We tend to believe whatever an older person, especially amritdhari (Guru-roop) says. They, because of the respect and trust we have in Khalsa, to us seem like the best resource. It should be that way, but what we forget to do is, has the person explained to us in terms of what Gurbani says on the topic/issue.

There are a lot of women out there who do not feel comfortable doing Seva especially during their menses. A main example is sitting on the ‘tabiyaa’ (Guru Ji’s hazoori) during this time. This topic is not frequently talked about as women themselves think they are “dirty”. Why do they think they are “dirty”? The above mentioned incident should explain the reason.

There is no rule in Sikhi where it mentions not being able to pray unlike in Islam where women cannot fast or pray during this time. Why can a woman not undertake the duty of Paath because of a specific time of a month? It is not restricted to a specific number of weeks a month. It is sad to say, but most of us who call ourselves Sikhs don’t know the teaching of our own Guru Sahib Jis. Also there are not as many Granthee women as there are men, which lead us to think that “may be” men are the only ones who should do this seva.

By some unaware/unconscious people, woman is still labeled “impure”. Well lets talk about what impurity really is? The answers are all in Gurbaani and it is clearly stated that “Sootak”, impurity or pollution is in those who do not have the Lord’s name dwelling in their mind.

ਸੂਤਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

The actions of those who do not worship the Lord are polluted.

The womb of woman that sheds the egg periodically is responsible for new life on earth and in this womb the Lord places the soul:

ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਿਆ ॥

He cherished and preserved you in your mother's womb;

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥

He blessed you with body and soul, and embellished you.

A woman is responsible for giving birth to all human life and nurturing it:

ਉਦਰ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਾਤਾ ॥

The womb of the great mother earth gives birth to all

Furthermore, some individuals forbid taking Amrit during menses. Giving this a thought, if the Lord created Raakt, and it is considered impurity, what about the rest of the creation? We all are born from it, (so in a sense we all are impure, and no one can ever be pure enough to take amrit or do seva. That is what Christians believe, isn’t it that you are born as a “sinner”? Are we implying the same thing? This way we all are impure, and we all should totally stop doing seva. Is this what Sikhi/Guru sahib ji is saying to us? We would if Guru Sahib Jis didn’t have anything to say about this, but He has. Every human life is made out of her Rakt Bundh and this does not make them impure. Women should accept the fact that it does not make a difference in the Love and devotion of serving the Lord. For she is pure if her mind is filled with True Love (for the Lord Vaheguru). It’s the state of mind. This is not only true for women, but for men as well. Seva is essential part of a Sikh’s spiritual life and if we deny that one of the most important aspect of Sikhi to a particular “gender” we will be doing injustice to the human kind as a whole, in addition we will be going against our own Gurus who are our only support in life. Thus, the Guru’s teachings that we so dearly were trying to keep intact, we our selves would be destroying it by not letting Kaur do seva at anytime. We will be taking away one of the right, which only our Guru Ji gave to the humankind. It’s our choice, either we keep the distorted belief we have and not let our daughters/sisters/wives do seva, or do as per Guru sahib ji’s hukum and let Kaurs follow Guru Sahib Ji’s hukum and make the janam safla (fulfill the life’s purpose). The importance of women is stated inRaag Aasaa on Angg 473 by Guru Nanak Dev Ji:

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥

So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.

ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੀ ਭੰਡੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.

Please refrain from opening such topics when it is clear from the title that it refers to bibian and an 'intimate' subject. Sometimes it's not easy asking bibian in your family when they are not Amritdhari, or when you don't live near or know any bibian. Rest assured that posting on Sikhsangat about this stuff isn't the first choice option, it's usually the last resort. Secondly we're not strangers, we're your sisters. Silly.

Moreover please bear in mind that these issues do occur to every woman on the planet and the primary objective of this forum is to discuss what the members want to discuss and if that means asking a question about bibis Rehat then so be it. It's up to the ADMIN to decide if we need a bibi's section or not but having one wouldn't stop boys entering and complaining about it.

I am disgusted to see that you think this thread is about sex, and it just shows where people like you are headed! God forbid our little sisters grow up to be woman who deal with such nonsensical biological issues that were created by Guru Ji himself.
