a party can be a simple family thing or a friends gathering.. to clubs...

Even if a sikh does not drink or eat meat but geos here ... is it ok ???

I think there is nothing wrong with a sikh going to a Party but there are plenty of things wrong with our parties. Having said that "if we are to go to these parties , why not treat them as an excersice to strengthen our faith in the Guru by avoiding all the temptations"

A shabad by Shekh Farid ji comes to mind

PrIdw glIey ickVu dUir Gru nwil ipAwry nyhu ]

fareedhaa galeeeae chikarr dhoor ghar naal piaarae naehu ||

Fareed, the path is muddy, and the house of my Beloved is so far away.

chalaa th bhijai ka(n)balee rehaa(n) th thuttai naehu ||24||

If I go out, my blanket will get soaked, but if I remain at home, then my heart will be broken. ||24||

Journey of the soul to waheguru will be difficult. But as sikhs we have to follow the muddy path but always remember that where we want to go.

I personally believe that most of the time, "parties" are OK. I know our community has lots of them, so this is what I do. I get ready, etc. and go them! I usually leave after supper is served or whatever, so that is before or just at the start of the dances, drinking, and other junk I want to avoid.

Remember, we are not supposed to live our life in isolation... we should have social interactions with others, but understand that we do have some limits and that we must find a balance.

Why would a Gursikh want to surround him/herself in sin?...at parties/clubs what you find is basically a Kurat-fest. People drinking, smoking, eating flesh, dirty songs playing, people dancing trying to impress the opposite sex...basically everything Guru Ji tells us not to do, is going on. Just avoid this place all together, and keep the honour of Guru Ji's Bana intact. We don't need to surround ourselves in this kind of negative atmosphere.

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

Daasn Daas: here are some examples from Gurbani and Rehatnamas which speak against this kind of stuff.

1) Dirty Songs--

i) thriyaa raag sunehi chith laae || sunahu laal so jamapur jaae ||17||

Those who listen to dirty lyrics and lustful tunes with attention, listen Nand Lal Jee, they will be punished by the angel of death.;----Rehatnama Bhai Nand Laal Jee

ii) maerae mohan sravanee eih n sunaaeae || saakath geeth naadh dhhun gaavath bolath bol ajaaeae ||1|| rehaao ||

O my fascinating Lord, may I never listen to the faithless cynic, singing his songs and tunes, and chanting his useless words. ----Page 820 Guru Arjan Dev Jee Raag Bilaaval

2) Drinking, smoking, eating meat etc..

i) jooaa khaelai madh peevai so narak mae(n) jaavai ||

Those who gamble or drink alcohol will suffer in hell.----Rehatnama Bhai Daya Singh Jee

ii) maanas bhariaa aaniaa maanas bhariaa aae || jith peethai math dhoor hoe baral pavai vich aae || aapanaa paraaeiaa n pashhaanee khasamahu dhhakae khaae || jith peethai khasam visarai dharageh milai sajaae || jhoot(h)aa madh mool n peechee jae kaa paar vasaae ||

One person brings a full bottle, and another fills his cup. Drinking the wine, his intelligence departs, and madness enters his mind; he cannot distinguish between his own and others, and he is struck down by his Lord and Master. Drinking it, he forgets his Lord and Master, and he is punished in the Court of the Lord-

c) kut(h)aa hukaa charas thamaakoo || gaa(n)jaa ttopee thaarree khaakoo || ein kee our n kabehoo dhaekai || rehithava(n)th so si(n)gh visaekhai ||

Meat, opium, drugs and tobacco. Ganja, wearing hats, another's woman and alcohol. He who never even gazes at these evils. Recognise them as my disciplined Singh.

----Rehatnama Bhai Desa Singh

There are many more examples from Gurbani and Rehatnamas out there, these are just a few i found at www.sikhitithemax.com

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
