Obama Inauguration

Recommended Posts

This is what Obama said in his inaugural address in one of his lines: "For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers."

Many Sikh forums I have visited since the inauguration are full of ire because of the omission of the SikhsSikhs were excluded and want an apology from him. :cry:

It is sad to notice that our spirit of hastily conclusion make us trip on our own mound of ignorance and shows although Sikhi teaches us to be open minded, how much parochial we still remain in our non-Sikhi

Following is what Thomas Jefferson said when the state of Virginia wanted to add Jesus Christ in its constitution.

Thomas Jefferson:

"[When] the [Virginia] bill for establishing religious freedom... was finally passed,... a singular proposition proved that its protection of opinion was meant to be universal. Where the preamble declares that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed, by inserting the word "Jesus Christ," so that it should read "a departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion." The insertion was rejected by a great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend within the mantle of its protection the *** and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo and infidel of every denomination." --Thomas Jefferson: Autobiography, 1821. ME 1:67

Many of them are planning to boycott Obama, writing petitions and demanding the reason why way of thinking.

Perhaps our parents should have deterred us to study history and philosophy instead of medicine/ law/ accounting, theology according to phantom nihang traditions and engineering !v :p

Have you heard the full speech? Obama when he failed to mention Sikhs was not quoting Thomas Jefferson. Its funny how many Sikhs are prepared to overlook the fact that Obama failed to mention Sikhs and look for excuses which aren't relevant. The failure to mention Sikhs is all the more surprising because that when Obama needed Sikh votes his campaign was so fast in replying to the Sikh questionnaire but like a typical politician he forgets as soon as he ascends to power!

The reason why Sikhs should be worried are-;

1. More that Muslims, Sikhs have been at the receiving end of hate crimes after 9/11. If Obama had done his homework he would have known that.

2. With the number of people who were watching his speech, it was an ideal opportunity for Obama to given his focus on minorities to have named not just Sikhs but also Buddhists, Zoroasterians and even Bahais.

Hey who cares about the Sikh victims of hate crime, after all there's a black president and everythings gonna be alright!

You are mistaken -his quote was directly from Jefferson ! Kindly supply your evidence as to why you believe it is not eg. know his advisors or you were the person who wrote his inaugguration speech, etc ?

However, rather than take a 'stagnant statement from 300'ish years ago' he should have said it and included the buddists and sikhs at the very least. So much for change.......

Related point: perhaps its time for the Sikhs to defend themselves (as per the american consitution) against these racist attacks -remember, we think we are american sikhs but that fact is the vast majority of USA sees us as arabs ! Or just move to the UK were it is common to have knock with the whites and muslims on a regular basis -the British Sikhs arent cry babies ! Be prepared ! We will always be different and proud of it !

You know I was speaking to some Kenyans and they told me that some Sikhs have not made a good name for themselves in Kenya.

Many of them are as racist as whites who they seem to emulate. I wonder if this is a factor? I mean what are relationships like betwen indigenous Kenyans and the numerous Sikh migrants over there? Could this be a factor?
