Khalistan dus NOT mean the land of the pure. Some Sikhs, during the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji, wanted their own homeland, rather than being a part of India, and they went to Maharaja Ranjit Singh with this request, saying that they had already thought of a name for this land, the Khalistan. But Maharaja Ji did not approve of this, saying that Khalistan means the land of the empty, Khali - stan, therefore we did not get our homeland. It is from there the work Khalistan came, but did not get accepted because of the meaning of the word. The word Khalis comes from arabic meaning pure, and this is where people get really confused. The stan always has to be seperate from the word before, therefore leavin Khali there, but people think that they can call it Khalistan cos Khalis is there, but it dusnt work like that.
