Punjab Drug Problem

Addressing a panel discussion after the screening of Reema Anand's documentary on drug addiction "Punjab: The enemy within" at the Chandigarh Press Club, Dua pleaded for saving the energetic Punjabis from decay caused by drugs.

Equating the syringes shown in the documentary to missiles that were destroying society, Dua said they were the symbols of death as over 50 per cent of the youth of Punjab had fallen prey to them.

"In fact, liquor is the first step to addiction in Punjab," Anand told mediapersons after the screening of the documentary. Drugs were the slow poison that effected the entire family and society and grandparents and parents are today fighting this enemy within in Punjab, she said.

The influx of the migratory labour had left the rural Punjabi youth with hardly any work. “With no work, they take to drugs and are ruining their lives,” she said.

Even the NRI money being pumped into Punjab was responsible for the sorry state of affairs and goes a long way in pushing the youths to drugs, she added.

Dr Jatinder Jain, DIG (Bathinda range), regretted that there was no national policy to tackle the drug menace. Criminal neglect on the part of the parents was the basic cause of the children taking to drugs, he claimed.

Sharing Dr Jain's sentiments, Dr Deepinder Singh from Ludhiana, regretted that society seemed to have accepted the use of drugs. Awareness, prevention and treatment were essential parts of the any strategy to tackle the menace, he added.

Prabhjot Singh, senior journalist, who moderated the discussion, said the connivance of the politicians and the police with the drug mafia had virtually led to the mushrooming of a parallel economy in the state and only a mass movement against drug addiction could save the present and future generations.

Meanwhile, the documentary showed heart-rending scenes of the farmers consuming poppy husk and youngsters puncturing their veins with syringes.

Premiered at Los Angeles in 2006, the documentary makes a mention of the rural population in Punjab, particularly in Malwa hooking onto "bhukki" (poppy husk) which had become the poor man's addiction and smack and heroin being used by the richer sections of society in urban areas.

“Punjabis struggled hard to fight with Central Government in the past but now they are up against a enemy within,” the narrator said in the documentary underlining the nexus between politicians-police-drug mafia.

any development which affects the society or state must start from within an individual...we should make sure that we ourselves are not using drugs in our family...make your children aware...the way we teach them to speak, to walk...let the drug awareness be also a part of agenda while bringing up our children...!

Further, state Govt. should stop issuing liquor licences to the vendors...no more theke and daaru dee hatti in Punjab...for this badal legacy is required to be broken...even captain is not a good choice...we should try to find a nice leader...probably a female leader...but like bhattal or bibi jagir kaur...parneet kaur would be fine...though she is wife of captain...but seems to be an educated lady...!

Another choice would be Mr. Simranjit Singh Mann...seems to be quite concerned person in context of Punjab state..!

it is impossible to stop alcohol in a state of Punjab...or anywhere in India...but yes we can reduce the amount of alcohol consumption by stop providing licences to fresh applicants...no alcohol served late night, sy after 12...and we need strict administration to apply these rules...again badals are not gud choice for this...!

rules mustbe reframed for the use of sukke nashe like bhukki, afeem, injections, doddey, smack etc etc...let their be no bail for drug sellers if caught...let there be anti drug wing or specialised narcotics department in every tehsil, district of Punjab which looks after these matters as punjab police is too busy with stupid matters like lookin for girl who ran with her uncle or boy who ran with her aunt etc etc...!

I may also like to add that these steps are practically impossible in current Punjab as long as we dont stop voting for idiots in the elections...captains Govt. has looted the Punjab to the core, while Badals are not trying anything to provide influx of cash to the Punjab...the state of Punjab which had highest per capita income india even after a hell lot of troubles for more than a decade...is now cash strapped...amongst the poor states...!

some people wud say that if this state wud have been part of khalistan...the situation wudn't have been so bad...i ask you guys...do we really have leadership to handle a country...since our leaders are not able to handle a small state of Punjab...!

this is not the practical aspect buddy, you have to pull the nail out of your foot yourself...there will be no divine lightning in the sky to pull it out...Waheguru has given you two hands and understanding that thorns embedded on foot should be removed by hand slowly...you have to move yourself for that...!

Regarding thorns of love and pyaar, well drug problems are painfull thorns not the so called "thorns of love and pyaar"...so face the reality dear...!

fateh jee,

so, you think this is the practical aspect??? haha

was it a practical aspect when dhan baba deep's SINGHS head was sliced off??? when he didn't give a toss about what happened to anything else, BUT he had so much shardaa so much pyaar, soo much, that nothing touched him. You would crap your pants if you saw a dog walking with no legs........don't small talk with me jee. you want to talk straight talk with pyaar, talk with love talk like you mean your going to talk. Because all I know is where there is VAHEGURU, there is nothing else but love and more loveeee and truthhh.

if you feel you are engrossed in this little world of practical's, then I cannot do anything. think however you want, if that makes you happy, then go for it, no use arguing with a manmukh like me. don't bother wasting your precious time with me, unless you want to......

bhul chul maaf jee

How do we reduce the numer of young people in punjab from consuming drugs?

Difficult question, most western countries have tried to stem the problem of young people abusing drugs and have mostly failed.

1. Educate them about the evils of drugs

2. Provide jobs and other forms of employment so they have something to do.

3. Encourage them to learn about their faith.

4. Harsher prison terms for those caught selling drugs

5. Better policing in schools and colleges.
