I was just wondering, why on earth has Sikh Channel agreed to show the 'banquet hall' advert??? There's only ONE thing wrong with it; the clip of the bhangra dancers that they show. As we know dancing is not permitted in Sikhi, I have asked sikh channel why they have this on and told them to take it off but no reply. I love sikh channel as well despite whether they doing any dodgey business, i dont care as long as the word of the guru is being spread, but the word of the guru does not reflect in a small clip of bhangra dancers. Guru Nanak Dev Jee says...

I think you are making too big of a deal of this...

seems like some people just look at EVERYTHING in a very judgmental way. Sikhs don't cut their hair, so should they stop showing monays on the channel too? Since "the word of the guru does not reflect in haircuts?" We need to stop being the Panthic Police all the time, and sometimes reflect upon the positives instead of all the negatives in life. Just my thoughts....

Come on guys its okay to dance nowadays - Sikh Channel says so! Soon they will start promoting Punjabi caterers so then we can openly eat meat, and then who knows, maybe Cobra beer and then we can really have a good time at the banquetting suite!!!

But seriously, such adverts shouldnt be allowed if this is a CIC company which is also funded largely by the sangats direct debits. But will Davy Bal really care when his pockets are overflowing with cash...? He can end this venture anytime and sell the much demanded Sky EPG on to the highest bidder... and no one, no matter how much you pay a month, will be able to have a say in that - and thats from a legal perspective too :)

There's a valid point here..banqueting halls do not promote Sikh values (and if anything they take us away from the very root of the humilty of Sikhi)....I think the Sikh Channel need to think about responsiblity to Sikh values when choosing advetising space...

I understand the Shabad, but I think you are taking it literally. Dancing could refer to foolish actions. I may be wrong, but Bani is many times is metaphorical.I went back and read through the Shabad Bani. It seems to be pointing out the dancing of Hindu Ritual Dancing is meaningless in the worship of God. One of Guru Nanak's key beliefs is criticism of empty rituals; I feel he does this in this Shabad. Trust me I am with on Bhangra, its screwed hella kids in the community. Its synonymous with alcohol and partying in California.

I read the Shabad, and to me (and I may be wrong), it seems that it is referring to 'fake Gurus' who dance and take money from their disciples ("They beat the drums for the sake of bread"). A lot of Bani is recited when Guru Sahib sees something happening that is not right, and recites Bani to teach the people. Maybe there is a Sakhi behind this Shabad?

If we want to just look at one line, then we should never laugh either, because the line says "Those who dance and dance and laugh, shall weep on their ultimate departure".

I am not in favor of dancing either, but I still don't think that we should just look at a single line in a Shabad and use that as our argument. Another question: what if someone put on a Dhol beat (no lyrics) and dances around for exercise? Does Sangat think thats ok?

Yeah i agree with you here, but maybe it could be taken so that it applies to everyone, because if you think about it, laughing is a waste of time, laughing doesnt help you remember god and it just wastes your breath... a lot. some people may think this is extreme, but i think that is the reality... no?

      Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.

      I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124

      That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.

      Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
