Rules Of Becoming An Amritdhari

Sat Sri akaal sat sangat ji,I've just come across the site and registered immediately as i have a few important questions i desperately need answers to.

I live in a small town in the north of the UK and we are the only sikh family here for miles. None of my family have explained sikhi properly to me and I have had to discover the beauty for myself. I feel the energy of waheguru within me and everwhere i look i feel his prescence. I have radically changed my lifestyle over the past 18 months since feeling this way. I now do not drink, am vegetarian, though have cut hair due to years of ignorance and uneducation on sikhi, something which i deeply regret now knowing the significance of such an act. I have been waking early to meditate on nitnem for around 12 months and am learning gurmukhi. I now feel as though I am ready to accept waheguru's hukam and take amrit, though i have a few issues and i do not know where to go and who to ask.

Firstly, i help my parents in our convenience store on a daily basis which means i am handling packaged meat products, cigarette packets and bottles of liquor! I'm relatively new to sikhi but i'm quite sure that as an amritdhari sikh i will be unable to carry out these duties, which in turn would mean i am not contributing to the household, as this requested as a pre-requisite to being a good sikh by guru nanak. For this reason do I delay taking amrit until we have sold the store?

Also i am 33 and am looking to settle down and get married, i am looking to marry an amritdhari girl with dastaar and no make-up etc. which i believe is as it should be, though if i myself am not amritdhari due to waiting for my family to sell ther store, i seem to left in limbo. The vast majority of girls drink, have busy social lives and are not religious.

I am also considering moving to amritsar to study sikhi in greater depth, and maybe could settle there if possible, though im sure this would be a huge wrench for my family, again something i wish to avoid given the fundamentals of guru nanak's teachings.

I would appreciate your comments.

waheguru ji da khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh (i hope i have spelt that right! I am now quite literally a sikh - student.)

Take Amrit now if you're ready for it. As for work, look for something else, and quit your old job as soon as possible. But until you find something else, it is ok to continue working there. There were various bhagats who had undesirable jobs such as a butcher. He quit his job as soon as he was able, but before that he worked b/c of his need for kirt.

We have/had alot in common!

Guru di kirpa naal, from the sant and mahapurakh i have had the blessings to talk to, they have told me that regardless of our situation, never delay a step in sikhi.

my understanding from them has been that..

you should take amrit now!!! :D :D

there are going to be many amrit sanchars in the uk over the next week. Infact theres some singhs from north east are going to a amrit sanchar next sunday, do you want to speak to someone or discuss anything let me know and i will give you a contact.

regarding the work you do, do ardas everyday to Maharaj that he bless you with sachi kirat. go to gurdwara, ask the gianis to do it. Make sure you go to the gurdwara and spend time in the sangat and meditate, take your family too.

you will find a way out from your current work. it might seem impossible, but there are many ways to earn a living, selling alcohol and meat etc is only adding karam and is against the principle of sikhi, the older generations were not into sikhi and had no problem with it, but the fact you are taking this step shows that Maharaj is with you and blessing you, and welcoming you into his darbar.

purpose of life is not to make money, and certainly not add to your karam. we can here to love Vaheguru and jaap his naam, instead we get atttached to this world. it is a test for you.

sometimes it takes time for family to change and understand, but Maharaj works miracles, there is no doubt, nothing is impossible.

you are right, you need to marry an amritdhari bibi, and your 33, so lets not wait any longer lol

if you want to go to india to learn about sikhi, obviously the family wont be happy. you will know what the right choice is, whether you want to move there or not. but one thing you can do is, go for 6-8 weeks (or longer) every year, even if you need to get extra staff to help run you business.

dont live in guilt, you were born into your family for a reason, Guru ji has blessed you to save your family and probably generations to come. by doing seva and having a sikhi jeevan your destiny changes, what was written on your forehead will change, and with the Grace of Guru ji you will be blessed onto the path of Khalsa.

human life is precious, lets not waste it away.

Paa Ji, you sound very similar to me. Whilst , I was growing up no one in my family was very religious. They are the best parents I could have wished for. NO one can take there place. Both my parents mum and dad were born in UK. The period they grew up in there was not much religious teaching / role models about. So it was also out of ignorance not choice, as my dad is a proper Sardar now. Not Amritdhari yet, but living the lifestyle of a true Sikh, he get's up at 2..45 and leaves for Gurdwara Sahib at 4.15 everyday. Also I just learnt to read Gurmukhi, last year. I am a snail compaired to you and you a Ferrari, I'm no where ready to take of think about Amrit just yet.

My grandad had a really huge impact on the way I view the world, he was born in the time when they had to look up to the 'faranghee's and salute the shaibs, give up their seats even if it was 1st class and they paid alot of money for' (his words). My paiya ji (pie - ah G (phonetic spelling),), was from a very revoltionary village, they belived more in socialism and revelotion more so than religion.

So I too am seeking Sikhi myself. Since the last year, when I took my kiddies to India. Also because of my parents.

My personal opinion is why would any faith stop you from earning an income to support family. You do not consume the items. I do know that it is against Sikhi consuming, but the meat issue there are many points of view from Amritdharis'. Smoking and liquor yeah you can't consume but I don't know about touching, maybe you can't.

I am also considering moving to amritsar to study sikhi in greater depth, and maybe could settle there if possible,

It's your choice what would you do for a living? How support your family etc.? But if you can and want too, like have your heart in it - best of luck. But paa ji, theres the internet and various other media, so you can still learn alot from home.

Regarding your store problem, it is just as wrong, if not more to sell alcohol and cigarettes. Some say your just trying to make a living and there is nothing wrong with it based on making a living. I don't know how they can convince themselves that its not wrong. To this the questions should be asked, then why can't I go and sell cociane or crack on the street and make anywhere from 1000 to 5000 dollars a day. I will be just trying to make a living and won't have to work as hard. Here is another one, I can become a professional killer, it'll be by night job and I can make a living. People might think the professional killer job is more extreme than selling alcohol or cigarettes or cocaine, but let me just put it in words people can understand. When you sell someone a drug, what did you just do to that person. You sold him something that will hurt him physically and mentally and spiritually. If he becomes an addict now you might have a regular customer, which is good for business, but your killing this person slowly and along the way this person is hurting others because of his addiction. Not to mention alcohol is a gateway drug to harder drugs like cocaine. Either way be it professional killer or alcohol dealer, your killing others so you can make money to live.

Now this is why Guru Nanak Dev ji when he told us the three pillars of Sikhi put HONEST infront of living. People get really mad when someone steals from them, but I don't understand why they get mad. The person who stole from you is just trying to make a living!!!! Give the guy a break he has a family to feed and their name is Johnny walker, and scott and mary jane. Another thing that bothers me is when people complain so much about wars going on. All these people need to mind their own business because don't you know the US previous leader had investments in a compnay that made weapons and a war just means more weapons sold, which means he was just trying to make a living. Are these people that whine going to pay for his expensive lifestyle. Let the man live in peace he was just trying to make a livingbiggrin.gif

Also selling meat is wrong, because it's not jhatka meat, as Sikhs are told only to eat jhatka meat. You don't have to sell the store just stop selling items like alcohol and cigarettes.

Lastly for those that want to be clever, don't bring up alcohol in the form as medicine bit or other drugs, because the key word is MEDICINE. Not to get a buzz or sh*tfaced

Not 100% sure but the cocaine / crack selling might be illegal in north of England, in my ends London every thing's cool, just you are taxed so much on selling class A's it's not really worth it. As for the killer thing being a night job, you really need stamina for that, cos bro night shifts are hard, mess your body clock up on weekends.

Do you shop in supermarkets? Use a car? Use petrol? Been on a plane? If so must have been to the airport?

All these places sell alcohol and tobbaco, so by visting those places you are supporting the people who endorse those products, agree to sell them and pay for their lifestyle. Why even live in a country that sells stuff like that lets make up "only fiveistan",you are the kiing but i've got dibs on president, we'lll ban everything like rationality aswell.

Look Only Five, maybe you geniunely believe stuff like that but come to the real world, like on another topic the 'spn truth', by the way you edited your message but did not say you did, anyway it still as amusing after the changes. Some random people / who later you named as a women from another forum you had a disagreement with followed you across international borders, followed your movements, and did not once approach you or say anything. Just told I did that. Knew your exact movements etc. Whats more ridiculous someone doing it or you beleiving it, and the other posters about if "singh thinks he's in danger, giving advice". If that is true are you a secret agent and what do you know? And whats them peoples agenda, who funds them and are they planning to take over the world? (soory poor english, it's late got to sleep now).

So if the Government says it's illegal then you won't participate in the behavoir, but when Guru Sahib tells us to make a honest living then it's justifable like you have tried to jusify it below with the supermarket bit. So, I know what your saying the Hukam of Guru Sahib can be twisted and bent and compressed so then you can say I am following Guru Sahib, but when it comes to government it is the final authority and in no way can you justify selling cocaine because the government said it is illegal. Final answer, end of discussion, no if, and, buts....... Thanks for telling us who you hold in highest regard and authority, The government.biggrin.gif

Gurds, and this is why we need Khalistan where we can live by not indirecting supporting any organization or person that is selling items that hurt others. When I buy products I am real careful not to support a organization that sells alcohol or cigarettes or other items. Corporations are greed, but that does not mean we drop our morals and values and start acting like them.

We live in a world today that is being more and more dominanted by corporations that are only looking for a way to make a quick buck. They have branched off into many different markets from foods to cars to computers all in the name of greed, but shoud we lower our standard as Sikhs. Is that what Gurbani teaches you and if so tell me which shabad it is so you can open my eyes.

Look Only Five, maybe you geniunely believe stuff like that but come to the real world, like on another topic the 'spn truth', by the way you edited your message but did not say you did, anyway it still as amusing after the changes. Real world, I haven't heard that one for a long time. Last time someone said that to me, they ended up telling me I opened up their eyes to the real world. Also you did not get my examples which I put up. When you are directly support or selling items that will harm others then in no way is it honest living and you will be punished to the max for this behavoir. When you indirectly support a company which would mean buying food from a corp. that also owns and sell cigarettes then it is unavoidable. Again we live where corps who are running for greed are taking over every means of living.

The way you want to approach this topic is complete disregard for bettering the way we live in this world. There is no jusfiication for directly selling alcohol or any other harmful product to others. Even the justification for indirectly supporting a corp. that sells harmful items is painful to say, but it's one step forward to honest living and not thousand steps back into dishonesty.

You can do whatever you like, but with your meantality, by now I could have had a 8 figure bank account balance and another 8 figures invested into corps.

Everyday is a stuggle, but the struggle gets that much less when you work toward honest living.

And whatever problem you have with the SPN thread, please share, what was edited by me and is dishonest. The sangat here knows about my character. Kalyug Singh, also knows about my character and SInghs help each other out when in need(me and him(Kalyug) had a big arguement on a different forum and we still don't go around following each other into different countries, but he's willing to give me a hand with my problem). Kalyug, other Singhs, and I don't have the mentality as your SPN pals.

If you don't believe me then it's your loss the rest of the sangat knows exactly SPN's character. If it bugs you that they are being exposed here then please pm me and we can discuss, if your reasons have creditability.
