Bhai Dilawar Singh National martyr and Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana Living martyr: Akal Takhat; Sikh bodies declare extensive protest plan

By Daljeet Singh…. Published: March 23, 2012

Sri Amritsar, Punjab (March 23, 2012): Sri Akal Takhat Sahib today declared Bhai Dilawar Singh as “National Martyr of the Sikh Nation”, and Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana is awarded the title of “living martyr of the Sikh Nation”. Bhai Balwant Singh is awaiting execution of death sentence awarded to him for assassinating Punjab state’s chief minister Beant Singh on 31 August, 1995. Beant Singh’s regime was responsible for mass level atrocities and physical persecution of the civilian Sikh population in Punjab.

A meeting of five Singh Sahibs, Jathedars of five Takhats of Sikhs, was held here today during afternoon and the decisions were declared by Giani Gurbachan Singh, Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat.

Five Jathedars have directed Punjab Chief Minister and Badal Dal Patron Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal (President of Badal Dal) and Avtar Singh Makkar President of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee to meet President of India and seek release of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and convey sentiments of the Sikh nation to the Indian state.

Akal Takhat Jathedar has also directed the Sikhs to close their work places on March 28 and mediate the Naam (Vaheguru) for Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana.

Meanwhile, the Seven member committee formed by the various Sikh organizations, including Shiroman Akal Dal (Mann), Akali Dal Panch Pardhani, Khalsa Action Committee, Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi, Dal Khalsa; has chalked out and declared the follow up plan after hearing the decisions taken by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib.

Sikh organizations have given a one day Punjab bandh call on 28 March, 2012 to protest against proposed execution of Bhai Balwant Singh.

They have asked the Sikh masses to organize marches from three Sikh Takhats situated in Punjab to Patiala city where Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana is confined in Central Jail, Patiala. Sikh organizations shall be organizing a mass level protest dharna at Patiala on 30 and 31 March.

As the date of execution is coming close the security around Central Jail Patiala and Patiala city has begin to beef up

The Akal Takht should press for the unconditional release of ALL Sikh political prisoners that have been held for years without justice. There is focus on attrocities of the past 20 years after a long time.

points to ponder-

1. Leaders or heads of all the sikh organizations should reach Patiala and stage a non-stop dharna. they should be ashamed as it is too late now. if the hanging goes ahead they should drown themselves somewhere quietly.

2. Leaders and sabha members of all the gurdwaras abroad or in India should reach Patiala and do the same.

If the leaders of sikh organisations, heads or main members of any sikh body including Guru Ghars cant do this then they should leave their positions immediately because they are mentally and physically impotent.

Normal sikhs should reach there if they can in largest possible number. But normal sikhs are looking at their leaders whether its a radical organisation, gurudwara head or any sect head or any dera head and if the heads are incapable then who will come forward?

Those people who are calling this decision of Akal Takht jathedar good, either lack enough political awareness or are supporters of Badal. Only good thing in the Hukamnama is that Bhai Dilawar Singh and Bhai Balwant Singh are declared martyrs. Jathedar had to do at least this much to save face. Apart from that they haven't done anything. They have asked people to pray for Rajoana on 28th and wear kesri Dastars and hoist Kesri flag on their homes. They know that this action can not politically damage Badal and this will also calm sikhs. But do we need a direction from Akal Takht to do these things. Many people are doing these things anyway. Another thing they have said is that Badal should meet president of India to resolve the issue. What was required was a direction to Badal to pass resolution in Punjab assembly to save Rajoana like tamilnadu assemby have done for Rajiv Gandhi's killers. But again this would have put Badal in a tight spot, so it was avoided. Now Badal can easily put the ball in president of India's court and can blame him for whatever decision comes out. Again it wont damage Badal's reputation. And why could Akal Takht jathedar not sacrifice his position to make Bhai Rajoana Akal Takht jathedar, well again Badal wouldn't have liked it.

Now Badal's supporters including internation panthic dal in UK , Sant Samaj led by so called Damdami Taksal chief Harnaam Singh Dhumma and Jasbir Singh Rode, Paramjit Singh Dhadi etc are trying to misguide people to beleive that Akal Takht decision is the best it could be. They are trying hard to make people beleive that Akal Takht Jathedar has directed Badal but they won't tell the whole point like I explained above. these very people were all involved in awarding Badal Fakre-kaum. Thses people are unwilling to criticise Badal for promoting Sumedh Saini as Punjabpolice chief. Anyone who speaks against Akal Takh jathedar, they label him as anti panthic and one who is dividing the panth. I am sure they are getting good favours from Badal's for what they are doing. How can such people of corrupt minds think of any good for Panth. Why don't real panthic people and leaders recognise this and boycott this group.

Another tactic this group uses is to link Akal Takht's superiority with its corrupt Jathedar. Akal Takht is an institution not a person. Jathedar is just a person and an interface between sangat and Akal Takht. Bhai Rajoana chose to meet the jathedar not because he thinks that he is a great sikh but because he wanted to surrender his whole body to Akal Takht and the only way to do this was through its Jathedar. It was his compulsion. This fact that Bhai Rajoana chose to meet Jathedar is also being used by these people to justify whatever Jathedar says.

I think sikh people should be more politically smart and recognise such people who are not easily recognisable and it is the responsibility of all true panthic minded sikhs to expose such people in front of common people so that sikh sangat doesn't get confused and doesn't get carried away with their false claims.

I don't see much hope untill we recognise that Akal Takht needs to be freed from such people. Otherwise everytime we will be asked to leave individual movements and unite under Akal Takht and then Badal's phone call will decide that united panth's fate. How many more such occurences do we need before we learn?

Guest KopSingh

the future of Sikhi will be decided in the next week.

cud u expand on wat u mean by ur statement, coz i agree, coz if rajoana is hung, then ppl will c infront of their eyes how much injustice n bias there is against minorities (especially sikhs), and start an uprising, BUT if he isnt hung, n rajoana is rightfully allowed 2 walk the streets of panjab, then he will start another campaign for khalistan, WIN-WIN situation, i say

@ HarminderSingh - I've read your post with interest and you clearly have a grasp of the situation in terms of the behind the scenes dealings.

My question is this: How can one hope to ever challenge the Akal Takhat jathedar without being slandered and labelled as anti-panthic? Do they not see that on other issues where they ARE correct (i.e. Dasam Bani) people will begin to question their authority on those issues as well?

The person heading the Akal Takhat institution HAS to be straight-down the middle Gurmat-wise and politically. I say 'politically' as in 'no political affiliations' - even the allusion of political affiliation is completely wrong and damages the institution of Akal Takhat.

A violent uprising is out of the question because it'll open a can of worms that will set a catastrophic precedent. So then what?

Harminder Singh, you have hit the nail on the head. It's a shame a lot of Sikhs don't understand. Until Akal Takhat Sahib is free from the clutches of Badal, the nation cannot move forward. The aadesh was very weak, it offers Badal a way out, it doesn't even mention carrying on the Khalistan movement started by Shaheed Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa. The 250 jathebandies at the meeting suggested that Bhai Rajoana be made the Akal Takhat Jathedar. The jathedars even admitted that we can resign from our posts, but the SGPC decides who becomes Jathedar. Another thing that we need to understand is that the power of the Akal Takhat Sahib is because the Panth is behind it. Today the Panth cannot choose the Jathedar or make decisions at Akal Takhat Sahib......and this all because of Badal.
