I used to be a mona and have now kept my kesh and become amritdhari over the last three years, When I do my nitnem I put a recording on in the background and read along with it from the gutka sahib, this has helped improve my prounciation of the path, Now for the past few weeks I really wanted to start doing Sukhmani Sahib but I did not know how because when I do my nitnem and put the recording on in the backround i read along with it in gurmukhi but as the nitnem Banis are not that long in length compared to Sukhmani Sahib I have sort of memorized the Banis and so even if I can't make out the word in the gutka sahib I know what it is, so as I never did Sukhmani Sahib before I would not be able to read along with it in the path, so I first put the recording on and followed through with the Gutka and listened to it but I did not understand anything, so for the past week I put the recording on in the backgroudn and followed through in English so I understand what is being said, I just wanted to know does this count then as doing a Sukhmani Sahib as I am reading it in english with the recording in the backgorund, and hoepfully one day with maharaj's Kirpa I will be able to do Sukhmani Sahib from the Gutka sahib in Gurmukhi with no mistakes, but has any of the sangat got any ideas on how I can learn to read Sukhmani Sahib in Gurmukhi rather then in english

Can you read Gurmukhi or not?- If you mean it's because you are going to be slow, just do a few pages and then the rest with tape, and then keep adding more on to read or something? Or learn how you did with your Nitnem?

I think when you get older, if you learn the punjabi alphabet and the sounds, it's not that hard to start reading, yeah you will be slow, but eventually you will get faster.

I do path like this sometimes and I believe yes it does count. For example when I do Jap Ji Sahib da path since I have it memorized I just keep reciting and I glance at the translations so I know exactly what I am saying. So do not worry keep your faith and keep going :biggrin2:

And for learning to do path from a Gurmukhi Gutka Sahib, I agree with bhenji above. Just do a few ashtpadi's and then continue in the way that is most comfortable with you.

http://www.gursevak.com/content/video-gallery this should help with learning pronounciations. read the bal updesh pothi while you listen to the recording. match your voice to the recording. it's a pretty easy and quick way to learn shuddh pronounciation.

If you can read Panjabi/Gurmukhi, it will be easier.

When I first learned Japji Sahib, we used to listen to the CD and follow the words on the page. After a while, you recognise how to pronounce the words. If you continue, you will reach a stage where you can read the bani fluently without a CD. I would only allow it to "count" once I'd reached that stage.

The way I started off with Sukhmani Sahib was.....1) Listen to the paath. 2) Do online Santhiya! 3) Do it in parts practically.
