Someone once asked me to sum up Sikhism in one word. I did it in two : Organised Compassion

Many European countries do of course better articulate the above Sikh ideals better than Canada. For example, in most of the northern European countries everything is free regardless of social status ; pure equality. The benefits are universal. Both rich and poor get the same welfare whether they want them or not. The same free education etc etc.

Not sure what the 'Canadian spirit' is but in essence doesn't history show us that it is being an American anglican who moves north out of loyalty to the crown at the time of American independence and has since then been ruled by a German monarch sitting in another foreign country thousands of miles away in another continent ?

Happy Canada Day :biggrin2:

How we forget so easily. This is a black day in history as this is the day Aboriginal people officially lost the right to live on their lands peacefully without foreigners telling them either shape up or face the wrath of our strike. Robbed of their culture, their children, their land, their families, their spiritual path, and oppressed to accept a foreign way of life. Systematically marginalized and to this day we see the same system rejecting them the right the Aboriginal people deserve after facing centuries of oppression. It was only in 1982 that all minorities including Aboriginal people saw any bit of hope, but that was only a paper document that made the colonizers look pretty in their British suits, vest, and ties.

Does this sound familiar to any person coming from Punjab? Let us know if you would celebrate after such treatment.

No doubt Canada has changed, but to celebrate Canada day is just another way reminding the Aboriginal people you are second class citizens on your own land and if you try to do anything about it. Well you will face the man made law which protects the rights of the foreigners (whites) who occupied your land with force. See how well this works out for you.

What do Sikhs say, we forgive but never forget.............well this just doesn't stop at 1984. Humanity is one regardless what way of life they follow and their is no tolerance for oppression.

If we celebrate anything it is when the Charter was written up and enforced, where Aboriginal people finally saw a ray of hope into helping themselves collect the pieces and try to put there community together.

Next time you see an Aboriginal teen on drugs, robbing, and selling drugs. Don't think criminal. Think systematically marginalized, killed, raped of his culture, land, religion, family, and community.

Aboriginal rights and honoring the aboriginal treaties remains a concern in Canada. However, ex PM Paul martin, bob rai and among other mainstream canadians have worked selflessly to create awareness about aboriginal right and treaties and jason kenney did excellent job revamping Canadian citizen ship test by including lot more aboriginal history in the canadian citizen material to create more awareness about aboriginal people, culture and their treaties.

There is not even single aboriginal group who is not celebrating today actually canadian day celebration starts with them traditional singing, dancing with traditional dress, they are willing to put their differences behind with politicians today and come together by celebrating canada day in their traditional way. Aboriginal way of life and culture is not against Canada day but against some of politicians unfair policies against aboriginal people.

Anyway, broader meaning of being canadian is to care and it is universal and i don't think its on the clash course with aboriginal values nor its on clash course with any broader immigrant groups i can think of.

Oppressor or oppression would be restrict freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of liberty, freedom of choice, last time i checked Canada cherish and celebrate all those, for most part aboriginals are practicing their freedom of religion, culture and tradition and they are also given well deserved funding. Yes there are treaty disputes with the gov't but you can hardly label gov't or whole canadian being oppressor oppressing aboriginal- even aboriginal don't think that extreme or have that kind of one dimensional thinking. But off course if people think Canada (liberal/conservatives/ndp/green party) promotes oppression then they are more than welcome to speak out in real life and bring change.

Nobody is taking anyone home now. How can you judge full nation, its people and patriotism now with actions of past anglo saxon european who attempted to destroy aboriginal culture with torture, rape, racist policies.

Canada now is made out of charter right and freedom of all by Pierre Trudeau.

It's like judging UK now based on actions of british umpire in the past and even better its like judging sikh race, or its people based on actions of few atrocities committed in 1947 against muslims.

Seriously, if people are not happy to be in Canada or UK by making loose statements like- they are oppressing or oppressor then they are more than welcome to speak out in real life and bring change or if they prefer different nation like -sweden, switzerland, norway ... india, pakistan, afghanistan they can simply move there. Most Canadians are generous, but they don't appreciate someone accusing canadians to be oppressors and at the same milking them- taking full advantage of their benefits, social services, welfare etc.
