Good, its step in a right direction. However, overall it seems like more damage control stunt -saving image of india- in front of public and international community than genuine move to root this problem. I hope they are serious about this and start fast tracking rape cases starting from cold cases, 1984, gujrat/kashmir case.

India would have done nothing about this incident if the world leaders didn't get involved. Indian PM, just sat back and thought this will pass over like all the other crap, which goes on in India. Personally, I think these arrests were made to show the world how quickly India can turn things around. Did they arrest the right people? Well, that's something we need to debate about and you may get the odd conspiracy theories.

India will never change as a country, a culture that has never evolved. The caste system still controls the masses and influences the political stance of each political decision.

Politicians use the caste, language, religion, socio-economic divide because we the people let them. But the winds of change are blowing....

The caste system is the fundamental thought process of all Indians, we people let them? Which people are you talking about, the high caste because I don't think the low caste have any say. How can you change the entire nations thought process, its been part of their development for 1000's of years. How can this change happen?

The southern part of India may change, southern Indians have a complete different mind set to the northerns. But these winds of change you speak about have been blowing for the last 30 years in India. India has continued to deteriorate, the only changes you will see are the Independence of the southern states from North India.

The caste system is largely become a rural phenomenon with the growing cities largely disregarding it. So, the answer is development.

Southern India is just bad, if not worse, than northern india in terms of caste. In this region, the intercaste problems are because the dalits (who make the largest community in the deep south) are subdividing themselves. Unbelievable! But true. The fisherman caste will not interact with the theluviar caste because they believe them to be lower. The irony is that both are classified as dalits.

Development of what? The caste system was in existence before the British Raj, before the Mughul era and Indians lived within this system.

How is this "development" you mention going to change this?
