Modern Family Structure

Is the family and extended family not as strong or valued as it used to be? f

I remember growing up I was very close to extended family and saw them regularly but as I have got older and with the changing times I am finding that I don't see the extended family as much. Not only that but we hardly see any of a close relatives these days either.

Is this to do with the modern times in that family is not valued as much as it used to be or is it rather that as we get older we become more interested in our own immediate family/career ect then our outer network of relatives.

Reasons include politics, jealousy; people believing they know more and are always correct. Education and money have corrupted many. However I don't think it's a bad thing if it brings you closer to maharaaj.

Do we not need family for support though? I mean Family should always be there for one another. Whereas Punjab family's tend to have to much arrogance and fight with each other over little issues.

I think we have all the support we need because Guru ji gave us the brotherhood and sisterhood of humanity, sometimes our Gursikh mai bhai give us deep understanding that our blood cannot

Potential theory:

It may have to do with less and less co-dependence. The parents would retire and depend on the sons/daughters to take care of them. One married couple may not be able to afford a house alone and would team up with brothers' or sisters' married couples to purchase a home and continue to use parent's resources - land and house in some cases - to make income and live in. Most nowadays are independently well off enough to be in separate houses. The children would take care of their parents due to passing on land or wealth and were obligated to take care of them (apart from those who genuinely want to take care of parents) to get their fair share of land or wealth. When the co-dependence is missing, there is no need to be together and families separate. Families that do live together now have a need to do so, and when they are wealthy enough to separate, will do so (and fight along the way until they make the step to separate).

But does family not make us stronger. So many families these days are split up with siblings not speaking to one another. In Sikhism does it not say families are important?

ie we must work hard to keep good relations.
