I think it was probably incorporated and 'standardised' during the Singh Sabha Lehar like a lot of stuff we live with today. European influence. -
Though if I explore this further. I think that when Sikhs were moving to New York in the 70's, it was a much rougher place than it is now. Manhattan is like Central London and people mainly lived in apartments and in those days it was a much sleazier place. Our people don't like living in apartments. We prefer houses. There is no way our people like to live in places like the Bronx (too many blacks), Brooklyn has too many blacks as well. So the only borough that may be suitable is Queens as it was probably more affordable, less crime ridden where there is more space and you could buy a house. Not a terraced house but a detached one with a basement. What you probably also note is that the demographics has probably changed. These boroughs of New York are quite big and Richmond Hill probably more Jews and Italians living there and probably less blacks Hispanics etc But over the years there has been a demographic shift. This might explain in part why we are seeing things happening. But there are likely also other factors.

I agree, and I'm also pretty sure most sullay there would lump all Sikhs with the Hindus too. -

I've never heard a single tarkhan whining about this in my entire life myself personally. But a certain other 'flying' caste who seems to want everything handed to them on a plate can't stop crying about it at every opportunity they get. Well, they seem completely useless. In any case like we can have any impact on those pendus back home. Have you met and interacted with them? They know everything already. lol! Truth is that most rural Panjabis have a normalised sociopathic mentality. That's why they always just say 'ehdhaan chaldaa eththay' (i.e. that's how it goes around here) to every last bit of backward behaviour and corruption. Which is ironic because a big part of Sikhi (historically) actually revolved around confronting and changing established practices which were deemed as unhealthy to society. So this idea in theory shouldn't be a big shock to pendus, but most clued up people know that in reality, what really dictates societal norms over there isn't any dharamic soch but rather pendu jut subechaar - which is why the place is such a underdeveloped sh1thole, complete with Gurdwaras you can donate toy aeroplanes too, to get Waheguru to help you fly away from the place............
