Learning in what historical context Gurbani was said is very important.   However, to say without a historical context a person cannot grasp the true meaning of the Shabad is being extreme and forgetting that Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is the complete Guru.  If the meaning of a shabad cannot be understood without the historical context.   Why didn't the Guru include the historical significance with the shabad in Sri Guru Granh Saib ji?  The raag was included.  We say and its known Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is the complete Guru.  Nothing needs to be added or taken away.   If you follow the Guru, you will attain liberation.   There is no uncertainty here.  So such blanketed statements cannot be true.  Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is the living Guru.  By living i mean, Guru sahib speaks to you through this world.  Guru Sahib answers prayers, gives wisdom and gives liberation and no historical context is needed to obtain these blessings.
