FUNERAL MARRED BY CLASHES

Community leaders in the US are calling for calm following the murders of a family of Egyptian immigrants.

There are fears the killings in New Jersey may have been motivated by religious hatred after threats appeared on an internet chatroom.

The bodies of Hossam Armanious, 47, his 37-year-old wife, Amal Garas, and their daughters, Sylvia, 15, and Monica, eight, were found bound and gagged on Friday.

The family, who had arrived in New Jersey in 1997, had been stabbed repeatedly in the throat and head.

Mr Armanious and his family belonged to the Coptic Orthodox Church, a type of Christianity followed by about 10% of Egypt's population.

Authorities are investigating the possibility they were murdered by a Muslim angered over messages Mr Armanious wrote in an internet chatroom.

A funeral for the family ended in violence as tensions rose between Muslims and Christians in New Jersey.

As the four coffins were carried to church, protesters carrying anti-Muslim signs and shouting anti-Islam slogans prompted several scuffles with mourners, who said the protesters had no respect for the dead or the grieving relatives.

Ahmed Sheded, president of the Islamic Centre of Jersey City who attended the ceremony, denounced the slayings.

He said: "We feel this is something that was very far away from our community. A real Muslim can't do that. Any religious person who believes in God cannot do this, even to an animal."

Sat Sri Akal:

Let us not jump to conclusions. The murderers have not been arrested and the cause is not completely known.

Not that these actions can be considered representative of all Muslims either. If a "Sikh" was to beat up someone unprovoked, we would not be calling him/her an accurate representation of Sikhism either.
