  1. ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫਤਿਹ ਜੀ I just watched a few minuts ago a small docu about the Bulp Bottle. It's about bringing light in the house without electricity. It just works in day light but still a usefull thing which safes money. The bottle gives a light like a 50 watt bulp. They said it will work 2 years. What do you need: - A Bottle - Bleach - Tools... U can easily install it in villages or on farms. Also a gud thing is in slums where the houses are very close to each other. Think about it... It doesn't cost any money at all... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R83yYEIbFT0 http://www.good.is/p...le-solar-bulbs/

  2. Hi guys, I'm doing a university mini project for my final year studying Law and have been asked to do a project in my International Law module, I decided to write about something that is of massive importance to me thus the question I am writing an answer for is (I had to think of the question myself), 'Were the Anti-Sikh Riots of 1984 in India a breach of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide' I'm having issues however regarding sources for it with direct reference to it, such as statistics and reaction to the riots from other nations? I would be very grateful is somebody could send me some links to any type of sources which highlight statistics, articles, videos, pretty much anything that will assist me. Also if anybody knows of any books which may help me. Thank You WJKK WJKF

  3. The title is possibly a little misleading, I'm not advertising an ebay auction (if the mods and sangat dont mind i may do shortly). Just wanted an opinion from veer n pehn ji's. I have a relative in punjab in who is a pretty brilliant artist (in my view), he sells some of his sikhi related artwork in the local town for pittance and this is generally his way of feeding the family. I was thinking of listing some of oil paintings and sketches on ebay as I'm sure if there are plenty of people like me out there that would like high quality work such his for very reasonable prices - at the same time he'll make a more comfortable living. Before I go ahead and list some of his images on ebay I wanted to know if I'm likely to face any kind of a backlash or if theres even a market for artwork? His artwork is generally of gurdware or modified reproductions of the images of guru's in the mainstream.

  4. Sangat Update and Press Release - 13 February 2012 Sri Akal Takhat Sahib issues further Aadesh regarding Gurdwara’s and party halls Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars are pleased to inform the UK Sikh Sangat that Sri Akal Takhat Sahib has issued a further Aadesh (edict) which re-confirms that no anti Gurmat activities such as parties with meat and alcohol are permitted on any Gurdwara owned or related property. Gurmukhi version of Aadesh: English translation of Aadesh: The Aadesh also confirms that all Gurdwara properties including educational, cultural or other places which have been built or run with the Sangat’s dasvand or donations made to the Gurdwara belong to the Gurdwara and cannot be sold or donated to another person or entity for anti Gurmat purposes. The Aadesh further states that the constitution, administration and management of Gurdwara Sahib’s is subject to and must accord with Panthic accepted Rehit Maryada. The Aadesh was issued to Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars and the Sikh Council UK by the Akal Takhat on 8 February 2012. Recognising the work of Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars and the Sikh Council UK, the Akal Takhat stated that it was pleased to note that Sikhs worldwide are seeking to promote the utmost respect for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Maharaaj and confirmed that maintaining reverence for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s Saroops and preventing beadbi from taking place is the primary duty of every Sikh. The original version in Punjabi signed by Jathedar Singh Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh and its English translation is attached with this update and can be found on the Satkaar Campaign blog at http://www.satkaarcampaign.blogspot.com. The Aadesh follows the unfortunate attempts by certain Gurdwara committees in the UK to justify the consumption of meat and alcohol in halls owned by those Gurdwaras by claiming the constitutions of those Gurdwaras permit such practices or by proposing to try to get around the issue by donating or selling at gross under-value those halls to third parties. Those Gurdwara committees believe that parties can continue to take place in their halls if they sell or donate them to some other organisation as they say the halls will have nothing further to do with the Gurdwara anymore as they will be owned by a separate organisation. Even though the misuse of the Gurdwara’s Golak funds for such anti Gurmat actions would appear to any common Sikh to be clearly wrong, sadly certain Gurdwara committees are contemplating selling their halls to non Sikh organisations for gross undervalue or even gifting them away for free. What this would mean is that the Sangat's money that has been donated to the Gurdwara will in effect be used to permanently subsidise meat and alcohol parties at the expense of the Sangat. Satkaar Campaign: Next Steps Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars will be forwarding a copy of the Aadesh to Gurdwara’s across the country. The Aadesh is a binding directive on Gurmat Maryada from the Akal Takhat and all offending Gurdwara management committees need to take immediate steps to comply with its terms and stop the gross sacrilege of parties with meat and alcohol on Gurdwara premises. Further steps also need to be taken as necessary to amend Gurdwara constitutions to remove all offending passages within such governance documents which must clearly stipulate that anti-Gurmat practices are prohibited in all properties belonging or related to the Gurdwara. To any Gurdwara committee that is proposing to sell or donate their hall or centre to some other entity to continue parties our message is clear: you cannot do this. We shall have no option but to report non compliance with this Aadesh by Gurdwara committees to the Akal Takhat for further action. We humbly request all Gurdwara’s, Gurdwara Councils, Jathebandees and other Sikh organizations to work together on a local and national level as necessary to implement this Aadesh and eradicate gross anti Gurmat practices from our Gurdwara’s. As the Akal Takhat itself stipulates in the Aadesh, maintaining Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Maharaaj and preventing beadbi from taking place is the primary duty of every Sikh. We are wholeheartedly thankful and welcome the support and encouragement from Sevadaars of Sikh Council UK in the matter of the Aadesh from Sri Akal Takhat Sahib. As the leading umbrella Sikh organisation representing the UK Sikh Sangat nationally and internationally, the Satkaar Campaign looks up to the Sikh Council in this regard and we wish to continue working hand-in-hand with the SCUK to promote Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj. What's been happening with the Satkaar Campaign in the past few months? A few months have passed since our last update but the Sangat can be rest assured that with its blessings, the Sevadaars have continued to work on raising awareness of Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. In the past few months two further Gurdwaras committees have stopped meat and alcohol being served on their Gurdwara premises. In these Gurdwaras, whilst the Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars were involved in liaising with and supporting the local Sangat, it was the local Sangat that took the lead and initiative to stop the abuse of Gurdwara property occurring. We are very pleased and encouraged that Sangat across the UK is now becoming aware of, and acting upon, their obligation to uphold Satkaar of Guru Sahib Ji's Saroops and Gurmat Maryada. Whilst we would like to disclose the location of these two Gurdwaras, local Sangat have requested us to refrain from doing so due to ongoing local sensitivities on this issue. Altogether, with Guru Sahib Ji's blessings and the continued support of the Sangat, to date, seven Gurdwara’s have stopped meat, alcohol, tobacco, dancing and parties at halls owned by or linked to such Gurdwara’s over the last 16 months following the inception of the Satkaar Campaign. Also, we understand that three Gurdwara’s that were planning to fund new party halls with Guru Sahib Ji's Golak have refrained from doing so. Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars will continue working positively with all Sikh communities to PEACEFULLY eradicate the consumption of meat and alcohol from the now few remaining Gurdwara premises throughout the country. Wider role for Satkaar Campaign? The Satkaar Campaign is a UK Sangat-led movement whose initial focus has been to raise awareness of the gross sacrilege that a small minority of Gurdwara committees in the UK are continuing to commit by permitting the consumption of meat and alcohol on Gurdwara owned or related premises. The Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars remain committed to continue raising awareness on this issue and our aim is to put a permanent end to such beadbi taking place in our Gurdwara’s in the UK. However, the Sangat may be aware that Sevadaars have repeatedly been requested and/or felt morally obliged to intervene in others matters besides party halls relating to Satkaar of Guru Granth Sahib Ji where the Sevadaars have been recently active. We will be providing further information on these matters and proposed new initiatives in the coming weeks. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

  5. I am an American Christian girl in a long term relationship with a Sikh man from Punjab. I don't know if we will ever marry but we do see our future together. What do I need to know about being the supportive Sikh wife even if I am never to be "wife" but just in that role?? We are deeply in love and hopefully one day he will agree to move to US with me. For now, we remain long distance. I just want to know what I need to know to be his biggest supporter and "wife" even tho i'm not Sikh but rather Christian. Thanks!!

  7. 1984 riots convict’s sentence commuted Kishori Lal (48), lodged in Tihar Jail since 1996, will soon be a free man. Lal, convicted of multiple murders in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, is serving life term. Acting on the recommendations of the state Sentence Review Board (SRB), Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) Tejendra Khanna recently commuted the sentence of Lal and 14 other life convicts to give them a chance to “reform and rehabilitate themselves” said a jail source. The jail authorities had recommended Lal to the SRB because of his "excellent conduct as an inmate and the fact that at 48 years of age, he stands a chance to rehabilitate himself," said the source. Lal and the 14 others need to furnish a surety and personal bond, each, worth Rs 10,000 to be released. The surety and personal bonds are to be submitted to the state revenue department. Life convicts, who have served a minimum of seven years in the jail, are eligible to get their sentences commuted by the SRB. The prison's spokesperson Sunil Gupta said, "This must be one of the highest instances of convicts' sentences getting commuted on the SRB's recommendations." "The SRB includes the chief minister, who is the chairperson of the board, a nominee of the city police chief, a nominee of judicial authorities, chief probation officer and director general of prisons," said Gupta. The recommendation for commuting a life convict's sentence is sent to the SRB by the jail authorities after procuring approvals from the concerned police and probation authorities. While Lal has spent around 16 years in jail, 13 others, including a woman, have served between 14 and 20 years and another convict got his sentence commuted as he is suffering from terminal cancer. Lal, a former butcher who stayed in east Delhi's Trilokpuri, had been accused of stabbing victims in the neighbourhood. He had been sentenced to death seven times by the lower courts. The Supreme Court, later, commuted them to life terms. Lal was among 25 people, convicted by city courts for offences connected to the 1984 riots. Source: http://www.hindustan...le1-810177.aspx could they rub any more chilli in the wounds of the widows and their kids, who are living in extreme poverty adn still demanding justice? why should lal and 14 others have a chance to "reform and rehabilitate"? Lal was a butcher by profession, he went on a murdering rampage killing MANY during the genocide. WE SHOULDNT FORGET WOMEN WERE RAPED AND KILLED, CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 6 WERE RAPED. but this isnt important because the people who did these acts need to "reform and rehabilitate". 10 000 SIKHS KILLED IN DELHI ALONE 10 000 KILLED IN OTHER PARTS OF INDIA WHERE CONGRESS HAD A STRONG PRESENCE. WHOLE FAMILIES MASSACRED. Politicians who lead the mobs and rewarded the mobs are still walking free. LAL has only served 16 years for MUTIPLE MURDERS of innocent sikhs. The victims have been KILLED, and their families are living in POVERTY and are probably drug addicts due to the culture of the widow colonies. (the widows also say drugs are supplied by the delhi police) while lal has only sreved 16 years for multiple murders of innocent sikh civillians, and is likely to be released.... WE HAVE SIKHS IN PUNJAB who have been imprisoned for NOTHING in 1984. They haev not even been charged with any crime, and the government has no intention of granting them release. fun and games for some... flamable powders left by indian gvt in HUGE quantities to burn sikhs with. hospitals in delhi were ordered to close their burns units (before the burning began). gvt massacre of sikhs delhi 84... vaheguru nothing to see here... keep on walking... just acouple more butchered sikhs sikh homes and businesses were burntout after they were looted, and anyone found within was repeatedly and publicly raped and/or killed one of 20,000+ killed... their crime.... being a Sikh in india singh holding photos of his family members...on the very right is a lady.... some lost as many as 40 family members... vaheguru wounds are still freash for some family massacred.... vaheguru a defeated widow... with a life of poverty ahead mobs burning sikhs delhi 1 day after the genocide, all is well lets get on with our lives widow protesting 25 years later....

  8. VJKKVJKF Jee The Vegan Society says: "...the fact is that animal manures and slaughterhouse by-products are used extensively to grow our groceries – especially if we buy ‘organic.’" (http://www.vegansociety.com/lifestyle/home-and-garden/vegan-organic-gardening.aspx) Specifically, agriculturists use 'Blood, Fish & Bone' (!!!) to give more nutrients etc to help grow the plants. Now, if we are trying to follow gurmath, then we shouldn't really be consuming fruit because we don't know whether they have been grown using 'Blood, Fish & Bone' or vegetarian nutrients. Now, I know there will probably be some people who are going to say that this level/depth of thinking is too extreme, but I guess everyone's entitled to their opinions. And to think we should now stop eating fruit, seems crazy! But at the same time, growing your own fruit seems quite unrealistic... I don't know what to think about this issue to be honest with you. =/ VJKKVJKF Jee

  13. Dear Sangat Ji, I hope this is the correct forum to post this message on. Your seva would be much appreciated in the creation of audiobook versions of the 6 volumes of The Sikh Religion, Its Gurus, Sacred Writings and Authors by Max Arthur Macauliffe. I have recently joined a website called Librivox (http://librivox.org), which site is used by amateur volunteers to create audio versions of books that are no longer under copyright and are therefore in the public domain. Each book is split into multiple sections and volunteers pick one ot more sections to record. The 6 volumes mentioned are no longer under copyright and are in the public domain. I have suggested on this site that they be turned into audio books and a member called Carl has kindly agreed to coordinate this project, taking one volume at a time. It looks like that I may be the only one reading these volumes and this is why your seva would be much appreciated, not least because I have the voice of a donkey :-). In order to help with this seva you need a computer, a microphone attached to the computer and some free software called Audacity (although you could use other software if you like). It's easy to get started on this site and all the members are very helpful to new members. So, if you can, please do help. Carl has already set up the coordination page for volume 1 here https://forum.libriv...auliffe#p700629 All 6 volumes are freely available online. Volume one is here http://www.archive.o...age/n7/mode/2up If you need any help, let me know. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh, Sachin

  14. The Leftover God Source: http://www.outlookin...cle.aspx?279267 karnataka: rituals The Leftover God A temple’s demeaning ‘leftovers’ ritual has all sides frothing Eat, Pray, Roll Over... During the three-day Champa Shasti festival, Shivalli Brahmins are served meals at the Kukke Subramanya temple of Karnataka Once the meal is over, Dalits, backwards and people from the local tribes are allowed to roll on the leftovers The belief is the ritual will cure the ‘devotees’ of ailments The ritual has got a lot of flak from progressive groups The state department that administers temples allowed the ritual, adding to the controversy *** The annual Champa Shasti festival held over November and December at the Kukke Subramanya temple in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka has an unusual tradition. On all three days, the Shivalli Brahmins are served a multi-course meal in seclusion in the temple precincts. And after they are through, instead of clearing the spread plantain leaves on which the food’s served, Dalits, backwards and local tribespeople are allowed to roll on the leftovers. The belief is this ritual will cure the ‘devotee’ of ailments, especially skin-related ones, and will gift a child to those praying for a baby. It’s also considered an ideal form of thanksgiving to the local deity after “wish fulfilment”. The ritual, called ‘maade snana’ in Tulu and Kannada, is said to be over four hundred years old but there are no written records to prove such a claim. As the tradition reinforces and ‘enacts’ caste hierarchies, where even a Brahmin’s ‘jhoota’ is bestowed with powers to cure people from subaltern communities, it had been catching a lot of flak since last year from progressive groups in the state. Especially as this was being allowed in a temple that belongs to the muzrai department, a state-run body which administers Hindu temples. Last week, though, saw protests heating up more because after the huge outcry last year, the local administration had promised to end this ritual which violates basic human dignity. Apparently, under “pressure from devotees”, the administration allowed the practice from November 28 onwards. Nearly 4,000 people joined up to roll over the leftovers. What took the row beyond the usual temple affairs level was muzrai and higher education minister Dr V.S. Acharya’s statement that it was a “faith-based ritual and banning it was tantamount to hurting the sentiments of the people”. People immediately started questioning not only his credentials as a trained medical doctor, but also his RSS roots. They began asking if he would similarly allow dowry, child marriage and other social evils as they are also faith-based? The fact that the Kukke Subramanya temple is in Dakshina Kannada district has also added political colour to the controversy. The district has been a hot-bed of Hindutva politics of late (in 2008, it even saw a number of attacks on churches). Also, many VIP members of the state cabinet like Acharya, Shobha Karandlaje and CM Sadananda Gowda hail from the region. A statement by Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of the Udupi Pejawar math, a VHP leader himself, has not helped matters. In a nonchalant manner, he announced that he neither “vehemently opposed nor strongly supported” the ritual. The complexity of the issue unravels itself when we take into consideration the largely illiterate Malekudiya tribe’s support for the ritual. When the local administration hinted at a ban, members of the ST community went on a rampage, even declaring that they would stay away from building the deity’s chariot, a traditional activity they have performed for years during the festival season. (If the chariot is not built, the festival will remain incomplete without the final procession of the deity.) K.S. Shivaramu of the Karnataka Backward Class Awareness Forum believes “the backwards, Dalits and the Malekudiyas are being pushed by the Brahmins of the region to perform this ritual. They are exploiting their ignorance. They want to keep the caste divide alive.” Incidentally, Shivaramu, who went on a fact-finding mission to Kukke on November 30, was thrashed by the temple workers. “Those who attacked me were all innocent backward class people. After they attacked me, they were felicitated by the temple’s chief priest who is a Brahmin. One temple worker from the Malekudiya tribe, Nagesh, was suspended for leading the attack. The irony of the situation is those who do the ritual are backwards, those who thrash me are backwards, those who are penalised for it are backwards and those who seek a ban are also backwards,” he says wryly. Advocate and ex-chairman of the state Backward Classes Commission, Dr C.S. Dwarakanath, sees clever commercial interests at play here. He also alleges that the ritual is part of the revivalist agenda of the Sangh parivar. “The Kukke temple, tucked away in the forests and controlled by Brahmins, was never as popular as the nearby Dharmastala temple controlled by the Jains. This controversy has helped them generate some further popularity for the temple and its powers. In recent years, the temple has seen VIP visitors like Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri and some very big politicians. It’s sad that these people visited a temple which perpetuates such human indignities.” Interestingly, except for the Left parties, no other political party in the state has so far spoken out against the ritual. “In this case, the secular parties like the Congress and JD(S) look more dangerous than the BJP. They are only worried about their votebanks,” says a frustrated Dwarakanath. Writer and activist G.K. Govinda Rao, however, feels it isn’t enough that political parties and the government push for a ban. The caste maths and pontiffs, who are otherwise so powerful, should unilaterally demand it. Some years ago, another heinous ritual called ‘Ajalu’, practised against the Koraga tribe, was banned by the government. ‘Ajalu’ had Brahmins giving leftover food as alms to them with an added bonus—a strand of their hair and a finger nail mixed in. Last Wednesday, after a week-long debate, the state government voiced an opinion—in a rather feeble voice. Social justice minister A. Narayanaswamy, incidentally a Dalit, said that they may consider banning the ritual. Till that happens, it will be a whole social ethic mucking about in the leftovers.
