  1. Good points made above by _singhni_. We must share parental tips, things that have worked, dangers etc. It needs to be an open frank debate, we're all in this together. We cannot lock our children up, we cannot pull the internet plug- but we must educate and protect in a manner never seen before. We have to learn fast, as technology has evolved, so have the dangers. I was speaking to a friend GP the other day, he said the presciption for anti-depressants for young people is crazy, getting younger and younger. The pressures on children is enormous, especially when it comes to exploring sexuality. For children there is no longer a clear line between what is acceptable and what is not. Please read this: http://www.dailymail...mmissioner.html This is very hard reading for young people only a decade older. But so much has changed in one generation, we must evolve too. Spend more time with children Eat Langur together, pray together, do ardas together. Share experiences, fun days out, talk, talk and more talk SANGAT!!!. make friends with parents with similar aged children who also believe in Sikhi values. Turn BullSh*t drama's off completely. eastenders, hindi dramas. these are all mind altering, don't care how much you think its just entertainment. Make the child feel comfortable in his/her own skin. NEVER make remarks about being fat/dark etc. "oh no one will marry you, because your so.." etc NEVER over-react when you see something you don't like. The child will think I am already the "black sheep" i might as well now go further NEVER take you child to a mixed faith marriage. Take them to Anand Karaj of Sikh weddings as much as possible. NEVER bad mouth other Sikhs, leaders, jathas, Sants, gianis etc. Children do not need to hear disheartening gossip. Never bad mouth family members. Child needs to think the family is tight and if he/she does anything bad the whole family will disapprove, but also there to support. Never have family row in front of children. NEVER use children to take sides!! Treat Daughters like you would treat boys. if you dont like your boys cutting their hair, the same should be for eyebrows. Soon as you have 2 sets of rules, your on slippery grounds. DO NOT SNOOZE!

  2. A SPECIAL 5 PART SERIES ON SANT BHINDRANWALE: LIFE, MISSION,MYTHS AND LEGACY. Part 3 focuses on one of the most inhumane and vicious attacks on a non military target and tousands of innocent civilians in recent world history, popularly known as 'Operation Bluestar'. Known to Sikhs as the 'Massacre' and to human rights groups as 'Genocide in Practice'. We are told that the reason was one man, Sant Bhindranwale. What was his crime? Was he at fault? Watch to find out.

  3. I knew a couple who did not have a child. So they started waking up at 2am, did full ishnaan and recited “Thir Ghar Baiso..” shabad for two hours. Then they did nitnem and Sukhmani Sahib. They did this for two weeks. I think after a month or so they found out the bibi was pregnant. I know some who have done abhiyaas of the same shabad for different reasons and they got what they wanted. So my recommendation would be to do abhiyaas of this shabad in the early morning in addition to your rehat and Sukhmani Sahib. Beginners set a time limit of 11, 21 or 30 days as a bare minimum and do ardaas at the completion and start it again. You can do it as you like but do it for long enough and then do ardaas and take hukamnama which should tell you the outcome. If more is required you would know and do another ardaas to start. Keep doing it and when you find out you have been blessed, continue to do as much Gurbani abhiyaas as you can. No one can tell you whose fault it was other than high spiritual gursikhs but I suggest you to not contemplate on it. Rather, focus on your future. It could be that your naam kamayee was not enough to receive the blessed soul destined to come to your house. Guru Sahib wishes to send souls of past gursikhs and shaheeds to families of Amritdharis and for that a lot of naam kamayee is needed. So maybe you need more. Guru Sahib will surely bless you with what you want. If it is not in your karma then Gurbani and Naam abhiyaas will change it. Just don’t lose faith. Guru Rakha

  4. Let me also post a story about Sant Mani Singh Ji. Look up his katha on youtube, if someone can post it would be appreciated, on mobile here. A Singhnee came, she had so many problems, and kept crying infront of Baba Ji. Baba Ji said what is the matter? She went through a whole list of problems, and wanted Baba Ji to miraculously sort them out. He looked at her, and said how can you complain? She was shocked....Baba Ji went further and told her exactly how many months and weeks she had missed nitnem for! She cried so much, Baba Ji told her, read nitnem, and accept hukam. If that doesnt change your karam, I am nobody to interfere in the Divine Plan.

  6. Elisabeth Meru is a very unique individual. She was born in Hamburg, Germany and now lives in Munich. She has written short stories, journalistic pieces and poetry for radio stations and several newspapers and journals. The Guru's miracle manifested in her life after 24 years spent searching for God when she visited the Gurdwara in Munich, Germany for the first time and first heard Gurbani Kirtan. In this moment she knew: "I'm coming home." Years of listening and seva followed. She converted to Sikhism (after 7 years) and in collaboration with other Sikhs, wrote her first book about this religion. Elisabeth Meru taught herself Gurmukhi. She also has a knowledge of writing, reading and talking Hindi. The book "From the Heart of Sikhism - Guru Nanak Dev Ji - In your quiet rose garden" was written by Elisabeth Meru for Guru Nanak Dev Ji's 540th birthday. This book contains legends about the ten Gurus, their wisdom and teachings as well her own poems, fables and a fairytale in German style. For her book "Sikhs und Sikhismus, Religion, Riten und der Goldene Tempel" ("Sikhs and Sikhism. Religion, rites and the Golden Temple", 2006) she worked together with other Sikhs living in Germany. On November 13, 2009, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, in Amritsar, Punjab, India, bestowed the Siropa on Elisabeth Meru in recognition of her work and her service to Sikhism. In her own words.... The Rainbow Road During my long search (24 years) for GOD I found Sikhism by myself, just as I adopted the Salvar Kamiz, my favourite clothes even when I am in Germany, without anyone influencing me. When I became a vegetarian more than twenty years ago, Indian cuisine was the logical thing to turn to. Among my favourite dishes are Mattar Caval, Makkhan Parantha and Alu Parantha. As I absolutely love sweet foods, my favourites, apart from German chocolate, are Jalebi, Kheer, Kulfi and a sort of small yellowish globules, whose name I keep forgetting. Once I turned to Sikhism, I regularly went to the Gurdwara. There I met a Sikh and we married. I taught him German and built a new life for him. Without either of us being aware of it, his immense knowledge made him my teacher in all things related to Sikhism, and I introduced much of what I learned from him into my first book, "Sikhs and Sikhism, Religion, Rites and the Golden Temple." But before I could write this book, almost seven years passed also with Seva. While I was still working on the book together with other Sikhs, my husband left me. Fortune will run its course, but I kept part of my Sikh-family in the Punjab and still have a home there. After I had finished my book, I parted ways with the Sikhs. I was on my own after that, but my heart kept crying steadily for Guru Nanak Dev Ji – maybe this was the reason that I was allowed to write the book "From the Heart of Sikhism – Guru Nanak Dev Ji – In your quiet rose garden." While looking for suitable illustrations I asked some Sikhs from the Sangat for help, without much success. After a long time I finally found all the pictures I wanted in the fantastic libraries of our Munich University. My book contains over thirty pages with full-colour illustrations, among them Wood and ivory mosaics in the Golden Temple, and Front Elevation of the Carved Door in Amritsar, Gates from the Punjab (17th century), flowers and birds. The oldest picture dates from 1749. Also included were many smaller illustrations. There is no market in Germany for books on Sikhism, and there is hardly a publisher that will invest in Sikhism. Therefore my mother, a good friend and her mother bore the expenses for my small team of collaborators, for the graphic design, the printing (the German version was printed in offset) and everything else related to my book. When my book "From the Heart of Sikhism – Guru Nanak Dev Ji – In your quiet rose garden" was published I got a wonderful flyer from my graphic designer. After that, I wrote my book "Sikhism – Wellspring of Love." This book also was paid for by German friends and with the help of an unexpected amount of money, but when I turned to the Sikh Sangat with my wonderful flyer, I received a surprising amount of help. In the end, two Sikhs sponsored illustrations. Then something incredible happened: A Sikh living in Germany had read my last two books and contacted me to offer me financial support for writing a new book on Sikhism. This book should be addressed to the young Sikh generation living in Germany who are cut off from their roots as a growing number of them speak only little Panjabi, cannot read Gurmukhi and can hardly speak enough English to be able to read good books on Sikhism. Thus I could write the book "Guru Granth Sahib Ji Essence and Sikh Terminology from A to Z", which I had already been working on but lacked the money to publish. My Sikh sponsor, who prefers to remain nameless, is not rich, and I asked him for money only for my small team and for costs related to the book, but not for myself. What could I have taken for work that lasted months? This book as well I regard as Seva. But the positive things kept coming: As I turned for help to the Sikh Sangat, the resonance was huge and a Canadian Sikh Institute translated about 600 names and religious terms from Sikhism into Gurmukhi script, as I wanted to give all these terms correctly. This was a huge amount of work. I then prepared everything for my friend, an Indologist who is fluent in Punjabi / Gurmukhi, but cannot check her translations. I should also mention my team, among whom are another Indologist, a translator with a Ph.D. in English Literature, a linguist, a musician and some students of Indology. But let me get back to the Sikh Sangat. I found the cover picture for "Guru Granth Sahib Ji Essence and Sikh Terminology from A to Z" via a Sikh Heritage. The important thing about this picture was that it did not pander to clichés, but I left the final decision to my Sikh sponsor. The next thing I want to work on is a book on Sikh martyrs, whose structure is already clear to me. Some of the chapters from this book have appeared here on SikhNet. ED NOTE: Here are Elisabeth's beautiful writings that have appeared on SikhNet to date: Bhai Mati Das ~ The Victory of Love Sahibzada Ajeet Singh and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh ~ UNFORGOTTEN The young Sikh martyr – Tender as a rose I am poor and live on welfare. That is not pretty, but I could never have immersed myself so deeply into Sikhism, my religion, if I had spent my working life in financial accounting. I spend my time reading and writing and pass on my knowledge by occasionally giving German lessons to students from abroad and proofreading term papers, master's theses and Ph.D. theses. In what I have written above, many years of my life are summarised. I had to face many difficulties and received many injuries, from Germans as well as from Sikhs. But that is what usually happens when something new wants to be born and looks for a firm foundation to grow on. At the present time, I am looking forward to the future and hope that I may contribute something for my religion, Sikhism, with pen, ink and paper, in never-ending love and humility for VAHIGURU JI. I can only continue my work if generous Sikhs support me financially. Because my pockets are empty while my heart and my spirit are overflowing with words and sentences that belong, at the moment, to the Sikh Martyrs. I hope that Sikhs will come towards me on my journey, for without them the road of the rainbow cannot exist. “Don't you know? No-one can walk over the rainbow!“ “Yes, no-one can, but...“ I close my eyes and surrender. Elisabeth Meru You may reach me at emeru@t-online.de If you feel inspired to support my writing, you may contribute to the expenses of the project via my bank: Elisabeth Meru DE 4970190000000 Account number 4202279 GENODEF1MO1 or via Western Union Bank to Elisabeth Meru, München, Germany http://www.sikhnet.com/news/elisabeth-meru-journey-home

  7. Downloaded some great Panjabi and Gurmukhi fonts last week. I have a fair number of Gurbani CD albums for which I can't find any official covers. So I decided to make my own in Photoshop. I don't like to see a blank album space in Winamp whenever I'm browsing my music so I decided it was the best thing to do. Here's one I made yesterday. I am strictly an amateur when it comes to PS but I'm pleased with the outcome. My first version was very dodgy, lol. But nobody needs to see that!

  9. Gurbani is a disinfectant. The longer we go without Gurbani , the more we become infected with maya. ਭਰੀਐ ॥ Bẖarī▫ai maṯ pāpā kai sang. But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin, <a class="dict" href="http://www.srigranth.org/servlet/gurbani.dictionary?Param=ਓਹੁ">ਓਹੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ Oh ḏẖopai nāvai kai rang. it can only be cleansed by the Love of the Name.

  10. WJKK WJKF, these events are very tragic for the whole Sikh community who have put their hopes and dreams for real parchar media and want education and understanding of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. OK there is always a power struggle and one-up-man-ship between some people that belong to different parties, which in this case is tv channels, but they should not use this to affect the whole community by trying to shut each other down! Rajoana TV is Fantastic and I only hope that this channel if not on the tv screen at least broadcasts 24hrs on the internet. If it is indeed true some people have cancelled their dd then I for one am very sad that unknowingly they are going to throttle another voice we had in this world that spread Gurbani .

  11. I think the indian media purposely tries to incite caste hatred between communities - especially trying to get "Jatts" to hate "phape" which is utterly stupid. Most people who try to flaunt they're jatt haven't done a day's of kheti and are sitting in England, USA, Canada. Even in Punjab most of these "jatts" give their lands out on tekha and have paiye doing all the labor. I don't think the youth do it on purpose knowing what they're doing. My first name on a Sikh forums (as a mona with below basic knowledge of Sikhi) was Jatt559 lol but soon realized how stupid flaunting something like that is. In the old days baniye/bahmans used to say, "Je jatt na hunde, bandeian nu kheti karni pave". Sikhs lack numbers and organization, creating such divisions that our Guru Sahiban abolished is exactly what someone who wishes Sikhs ill would want. Imagine if Sikhs began to recognize each other as Sikhs and mobilized to do sewa all across Punjab, India and the world. No one touches the dalits, but it's the job of the Sikhs to treat them as human beings like everyone else.

  13. That Natasha Behl dissertation sounds very interesting. I can't view the link in the OP with my browser. Can I get a pdf version of the dissertation from somewhere? Or read a html version online? It's heartwarming to read the comments of the brothers and sisters who have internalised the wonderful egalitarian principles of the faith and rejected false notions of caste. Any conscious and forward thinking Sikh knows that this ugly remnant of the past has held the Sikh communities progression back, being the direct cause of a lot of lowly, base behaviour amongst us. Not only this, but it makes our society look like a microcosm of Hinduism with its inherent inequality. I've also noticed that those who wish to perpetuate this nonsense always produce the same old, tired arguments about 'race', 'culture' in order to defend it. Heartlessly playing down the outright cruelty that clearly manifests itself as a direct consequence of such beliefs. The truth is that such people, despite their obfuscation, only do this because they want to preserve some perceived personal status, or perceived superiority from the dynamics of the caste system. And it is sad and telling that people still need to cling onto such things to make themselves feel good about themselves, especially when they have had the benefit of an education. Whilst you can half understand some ignorant pendu, thinking this way (as rubbish as it is), I still find it shocking that children of the 21st century can think this way?? But it will be a sad time for such mental old foggies in the diaspora (some of whom are surprisingly young - no doubt brainwashed by older casteists), because they will increasingly see how the social landscape of our society, will change rapidly (IS changing rapidly!!) around us. A lot of us are bright enough to see the writing on the wall. The way things are going, pretty soon [for those who haven't got there already], most Sikhs will be sighing a massive breathe of relief when their daughter marries a fellow Sikh regardless of caste. But I have noticed another trend lately as well, where some ignorant apnay actually seem to prefer their daughters marrying say a gora, rather than them marrying into another subsection of the Sikh community whom they deem to be inferior. I'll put my money on belief and faith in the eternal outlasting any 'race', 'genetic' based ideologies, which come and go. No 'race' of people, however 'grand' their empires or achievements, or however great they have considered themselves haven't been brought back down to earth, sometimes with a dramatic drop. Maybe this is what dasmesh pita meant when he described Rabh as 'Garab Gunjan' or 'destroyer of pride' in Jaap Sahib? Those wishing to preserve some 'pure blood' should remember the last little Austrian <banned word filter activated> that was obsessed with such ideas and the holocaust he let loose on the earth because of it. If a Sikh thinks that 'preservation' of some genetic material is equal to, or worth compromising the preservation, cohesion and progression of the Sikh community - which is based on belief despite shrewed political moves in the UK to turn it into a ethnic identity, I seriously doubt they have any genuine affection for the underlying principles of the faith. Like caste, I imagine the Sikhi of their imagination is just another plank to prop up their ego - which is ironic, because as already pointed out, subduing the ego is one of the central goals of the religion. We've got a fair few battles ahead of us, on a number of planes, against both external and internal forces. A conscious Sikh probably already knows that one of the big internal fights is against the thinking that results in Sikhs creating hierarchies amongst themselves based on unSikhlike principles, chief of which is casteism/clannism/ethnowhateverism (whatever the heck people are packaging that crap up as today!) Don't excuse it, don't ignore it, confront it, fight it, defeat it! Big respect to the Jakara Movement people for taking the steps they have. Salute to all the Sikh brothers and sisters who dream of a begumpura in their hearts and take action to realise this dream. No ethoracial, clan, caste jibberish should stand in the way of our people realising a fair society amongst ourselves. It's what our Gurus strove for. Achievements we make in this domain will be one of the best things we could pass down to future generations. YOU KNOW it's a cause worth fighting for.

  14. Sri Akal Takht Sahib needs to make this meeting take place. Gyani Sher Singh ji will only agree if Sri Akal Takht Sahib tells Gyani ji to show Dhunda's true colors. But first Dhunda needs to be summon to Sri Akal Takht Sahib to receive punishment for his slander toward Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj.

  15. Guru Sahib blessed us with Bani first then with his kirpa we can lift the sword. Those that want to beat Dhunda up or send him off to Jamdhoot are only going to cause more pain in the Khalsa Panth. The goal of the Panth is to stay together and not split into two. If your blood brother is wrongly advised by a cunning person and your brother slanders your father. Do you cut his head off? ONly a fool would do this. Dhunda is trying to make two blood brothers fight. The only way you can send Dhunda to the Jamdhoot is by educating the ignorant brothers and sisters of what Dhunda is and show the illogical reasoning of his side. So educate yourself on how to counter Dhunda's twisted katha. Send letters to Sri Akal Takht Sahib of this new occurence and let them deal with it. Don't play into Dhunda's hands. Be smart about this.

  17. Borat Jee, it is a shame if you believe in the sham of casteism. Our Aatma has no caste or race. How many janams were you a Jat, Chamar, Churha, Brahmin, Habshi or Tarkhan you may not even realize yet you are identifying with the false notion of caste. To identify with one's caste means you are identifying with your body. But YOU are not your body. YOU are your aatma and Aatma has no caste affiliation. The aatma changes bodies as our bodies changes cloths. Once a person realizes this truth caste identification seems very superficial and frankly stupid. Besides, this caste system has done much damage to our Qaum. It is holding us back. In fact it has stunted our growth as a religion. We need to discard this system as soon as possible.
