  3. One day during a ride, the Guru halted and knocked at the door of a poor woman and said,"Good lady, I am very hungry, bring me the bread you have prepared." The woman, throbbing with joy, brought out some coarse bread which he partook on horseback, without washing his hands, and relished it very much. He then blessed the woman and cut off the shackles of her transmigration. Next day the Sikhs prepared dainty dishes with great attention to cleanliness and offered them to the Guru at the same hour. He laughed and said,"O Sikhs, I ate food from that woman's hands because she was holy. This food which you have prepared with attention to ancient ceremonial is not pleasing to me." The Sikhs asked,"O true king, yesterday you ate bread on horseback from the hands of an old woman whom you did not know. There was no consecrated space and the food was in every way impure. Today we have prepared the food for you; no impurity is attached to it, yet you reject it. Be kind enough to explain the reason." The Guru replied," The woman with great devotion and faith prepared food for me out of what she had earned from the sweat of her brow. On this account the food was very pure, and I partook of it. The Guru is hungry for love and not for dainty dishes. In the matter of love for God, no rule is recognized. It is not what man eats that pleases God, it is man's devotion that is acceptable to Him."

  4. I agree. The government isn't force-feeding drugs and alcohol to anyone, they aren't forcibly cutting anyone's kesh, they aren't forcibly stopping anyone from going to Gurughars or to Keertan Samagams or to Amrit Sanchars. If they are attacking our psyche, its time to cement it and respond by doing what Gurmat and Gurbani asks us to do, not what sarkaar wants.

  6. waheguru ji,,,,,this pankti means only with true, selfless, humble, egoless love, you can attain HIM.....because HE HIMSELF is like this.............. .........so for us to merge with HIM, we have to become like HIM, HE won't become like us.....

  7. Great idea! I was thinking of starting a similar thread but backed out, lol. There's a few words I struggle with and I'll get a hold of them and post them later. Here's one example: Okay, so I understand the word in fig 1 is 'Naam'. That's fine. I also understand the sound made by the 'aunkar' circled in fig 2 and fig 3 is 'Au'. So can someone please tell me how I pronounce the words in fig 2 and fig 3? Surely it can't be 'Namau' in fig 2, and then 'Naum' in fig 3? Some help is much appreciated.

  9. Important point to note, this is an open prison. So the inmates only stay at the jail during the evenings and are subject to much less intense jail environment. Also Guruji has given the role of parchar to the Gursikh. we are not doing parchar by leaving a saroop of Guruji at the jail. Thats shear laziness and leaving the problem to Guruji. Its about the sangat stepping up with the parchar in the jails, that will create an impact and change lives.

  10. Although you may get headaches. I jest. I suffer from this nonsense as well. It annoys me. What I do (or try to do) is to focus on every word and try to READ the bani instead of just repeating the words. I guess that's where the study of the meanings behind the Gurbani enters. You're obviously going to want to read something if you understand what it means.

  11. Does anybody else like it when the complex around Darbar Sahib featured greenery and trees? It seemed a lot more natural and old-school that way.

  13. Yea you can do it a little bit at a time until you are comfortable at doing the entire paath in one sitting. I learned the five banis from my nana ji whos a strict Amrit Shari and he would sit with me until I was reciting it properly and was able to do the entire paath on my own. When I started to do the sukhmani sahib it was really hard for me because of the wording. So what I did was I had the audio nitnem app and the sunder Gutka app on my iPod and I would read along as the baba ji was reciting the paath and some words that I couldn't pronounce I was able to. I usually did that at night when u was gonna go to sleep. Then jn the morning I would do as much as I could and then mark it where I left off and o that the next morning. And then slowly following this I was able to do the entire paath in one sitting. I don't think there is anything wrong in doing this. Guru ji would want you to do as much as you can and slowly work your way up so your not overwhelmed. I wish guru ji gives me enough memory and strength to memorize the paath withou the Gutka sahib one day.

  14. Gurbani can be sung and recited in many ways. Maharaj didn't say "Recite Gurbani my way or the high way". It says Gurbani gaavoh HOWEVER YOU CAN. Just recite it! ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨੪॥੫੭॥ Nānak nām salāhi ṯūʼn anṯ na pārāvār. ||4||24||57|| O Nanak, sing the Praises of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; He has no end or limitation. ||4||24||57|| If listening to keertan reminds you of Hindi tunes... maybe you should question why it does so? Maybe you should stop listening to Hindi songs?? Then you would enjoy the keertan without the pollution of Bollywood getting in the way. I listen to hindi tunes, I ain't gonna lie. That's why I can recognize when someone uses a Hindi tunes. I love music, it's a passion. So shoot me. Bhagat Naam Dev Jee and others that were of "low" castes who didn't know how to sing in Raags... did they not do keertan and reach enlightenment? Did they not reach sach khand because they didn't sing the praises of the Divine in Raags?! Encourage raag, I am not saying don't encourage it. But respect the art of these great keertanis and individuals who sing Keertan in whatever way. At least they are singing and providing a much more spiritual experience for thousands of Sikhs around the world rather than sitting on their behinds infront of a computer screen chatting rubbish

  15. I thought all the speeches were poor. really poor. the lawyer woman whose brother in law was killes in delhi riots was ok. other than that they were poor. really sorry to say this. last year was much better. what saddened me was that the videos on the large screen were also crap. we needed better english ones and much louder. before the rally hit trafalgar square goreh and kaleh and japanese asked me what was going on - they couldnt understand through the video. the whole point is not to preach to the converted. pointless exercise now. we needed much more leaflets and better quality speakers and videos in english

  16. Speaking from recent experience I wanted to learn Sukhmani Sahib da Paath, but it took me 3 hours to do just the first half of it! :blush2: So the first few weeks I had to split one Sukhmani Sahib da Paath over 2 days. Gradually I became accustomed to doing it, learning the correct pronounciations, etc., and finally managed to do one paath in 2 hours. So for me this system worked but I wouldn't like to say whether this is allowed. I did wonder whether I was doing beadbi by not completing one paath in one sitting, but I had no other choice. If you do choose to take it easy (for a while) like I did, even if it is not allowed, then don't worry we'll both get jootiya together. :lol2:

  18. Sant Ji says that this is the reason why 5 pyaareh seva is for men. Not because this seva is "meant for men." Its up to any bibi whether they think that they can do maharaja's seva I don't think anyone has the right to tell her if she can or not. Not to be explicit but that comment can also go towards people who have to use the bathroom while doing tabiya. They can feel the pressure to go to the bathroom at any time. So does that mean we all shouldn't do seva? I'm sorry but this point didn't really make sense to me. A woman can prepare herself if she has to do seva. She can wear proper protection before doing rol. When I am on my period I don't feel "unclean" in any way. A Bibi can do kesi ishnaan and make sure that no accident will happen before she goes for rol. I guess it all just comes down to personal sharda. I personally think that it should be a woman's decision. Not anyone else's decision. Guru Sahib did not prohibit us from doing seva therefore no one else should try to also. I do not think menstruation causes any problem to suchamta unless the woman goes unprepared. Usually women know around what time their period will come. I know that I need to be fully prepared. Especially if I am doing seva. These kind of issues shouldn't become a do or don't issue. We argue a lot of about do's and donts. Why not just go according to personal sharda?

  19. I don't think this happened.. A family bought a house built on a very old cemetery. The arial came off the telly and the little girl of the house was pulled into the telly while there was no transmission. Then a lady came and pulled the little girl out the telly with a long rope, and then said "this house is clean". I think the above is just fiction though.

  22. Ok due to Maharaj Ji's kirpa daas has a pic to show all of you's on here. Remember people Truth always prevails and if its for the right intentions it will be delievered. This is from the period after the Sarbat Khalsa and the seva continued on from then. This is not from the construction of the 'Sarkar Thakhat', as there are no boys in blue and no police present, also the aam sangat didn't take part in the construction of it either. Rab Rakha
