  1. hmmm....i dont think theres ne thing wrong with yoga. I really like it! I think its a great way to learn how to control your mind, so when you read bani, you dont just say the words with your mouth, you listen to them with your ears and understand them without your mind wondering off to various places. And I know lossa ppl who, while doing yoga do simran. They connect every breath with Waheguru...just my thoughts tho...but i didnt know it was anti gurmat....
  2. Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki Fateh! I would pick being a Sikh now, in 2005. Yeah I know we're in kaljug, and ppl are drifting away from Sikhi..but thats all the more reason for me personally to wanna be a Sikh. Its a challenge to be different, to excel in your spirituality, but i think it makes you a stronger person and all around better GurSikh in the end. We can really test ourselves during this era, or time, and ask ourselves..are we truely happy?..are we the model Sikhs that Guru ji wanted us to be...we're faced with so many obstacles, and so many hurdles within our community and ourselves, and ya our halat is bad..but i think that allows us to really do some soul searching, look deep into ourselves, and be the person we wanna be...I pik being a Sikh in 2005 cuz it really tests our love for Guru Ji, and helps us become better and prominent GurSikhs. :TH: Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki Fateh
  3. Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki Fateh Well girls dont wanna take amrit cuz..they "wanna live life to the fullest" and "try things" like drugs, and drinking and stuff, and if they take amrit they cant do that!! They also dont wanna take amrit cuz they wanna cut their hair, wear make up, shave, and go to clubs. Also..if they do take amrit..they're afraid no guy will ask em out LOL!! Ya..Sangat also has A LOT to do with it. I know when I first took amrit, all of mah frnds were non-amritdhari, and id look at em and be like yaa i wish i could wear a skirt or w.e...ya i know i was stupid..but it all changes depending on the ppl u hang out with. haha u always hear gurls saying that they will take amrit later on in their lives, wen they have experienced everything and have gotten married and have had kids!! HAHAHA LMBO HAHA!! ya..theres my 2 cents... Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki Fateh!!
  4. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! I have never done it my self...but ive seen my dad do it... You have to do agni peta next...so we just usually take the kesh to the garage and do it there..(dont worry..the smell will fade away lol) Then you just take the ashes and spread them in a river. We live in Calgary, so we just take them to the Bow River. And yaa..thats abt it!!..hope it helps Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!
  5. In the Calgary Herald there was an artilce in which the headline stated: "Where NASA ends, the Sikh Bible begins" ..sorrry if its kinda off topic..but juss thought it was very interesting sidenote...
  6. Guru Fateh I took santhya a couple of years back, and I remember that we came to a part which explained how kaljug is going to end. I dont remember what ang it was on, but the bhai sahib that was teaching us translated it, and he said something along these lines: Another Avtar is going to be born (dont know the place where, either India or China), and hes going to get people back on the right track to God. There are going to be many battles, and hes going to win all of them. But, all this glory is going to go to his head, and hes gonna get ppl to start worshiping him instead of God. I guess once this gets to an extreme, a black scorpio is going to bite him in his sleep, and kaljug will end upon his death. I dont really remember the whole story, but its something along those lines.... Bhul Chuk Maaf Guru Fateh
  7. I dont understand y ppl are trying to defend dancing...If Guru Ji says its wrong, and if Guru Ji says we shouldnt do it, then why are we questioning him?? Are we better than Guru Ji??..I dont think so. I mean isnt it enough that we're dancing through reincarnations? Dancing gives us no spiritual gain what so ever. So why waste our time/energy engaging in it??
  8. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! If you want to get good exercise why not do gatka??!! No spiritual gain is achieved by dancing, so y waste ur time and energy doing it? Will dancing get u closer to God? Will it make u a better person? Will it help you break ur cylce of reincarnation?? I dont know, I guess its your own choice if you want to dance or not, but this is what Guru Ji says about dancing: "...they dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain. By dancing and jumping, devotional worship is not performed..." "Jumping up and down like a monkey does not make the Lord happy" "Nachan Tapan Man ka Chao" "...O humble servant of the Lord, let your dancing be meditation on the Lord, Har, Har..." Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!
  9. wjkk wjkf If you have a outside wedding, where will the sangat sit??...I don't think they would wanna sit on the ground. You would have to bring chairs in, and thats not right!! wjkk wjkf
  10. where did you get this information from???
  11. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! Whatever happens...we should be ready!!! Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!
  12. I see why not...Gurbani is universal..as long as they are doing it with sharda and pyaar!!
  13. Yes its ok to wear kirpans at school. I live in calgary, and I wear my kirpan, not over my shirt, but its not tucked in either. So people see it and they know I wear one. Nobody has ever asked me to take it off. Kids often ask you what it is and why your wearing it, but when you tell them they're like ohh cool...and they treat you with lots of respect..so..dont worry!! :TH:
  14. My friend told me about a year ago that Hollywood is recruiting Singhs to get into the "film business", and once Singhs get some name, they are gonna start recruiting Singhneeya as well!!!..guess she was right..but she also told me that they are getting the Singhs to trim their beard
  15. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! Ya I have been really confused about the tablas, but the reason Guru Ji told us not to eat meat is because we have no right to kill one of God's creatures for our own taste. These animals are killed to get their hide/fur. So i duno, if Guru forbid us to eat meat because we're killing an innocent animal, then I don't think wearing one is okay either! If you want a leather look, you can buy pleather (fake leather). Its cheaper and looks the same too! (But i dont think its too warm!!) :TH: Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!
  16. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! This is what I have heard: Hair gets us to God, when we do simran it should penetrate through our hair. We cover our hair because of this. Hair is very special because God dwells in every strand . Covering hair conserves the brain's energy, which leads to more concentration and a sharper mind. By covering our head we are not only showing respect to God, but also making the statement that God is Supreme and Superior to us. We wear a Dastaar to keep out filth, and dirt (in our minds and hygienically). So, not only do we have to cover ours heads during naam simran, we have to keep it covered all the time. I think the Hindus use to do "prayers" to their gods while dancing around with open hair, and Guru Ji refrained us from that. Sikh Rehatnaama says: "Those who walk outside, eat or distribute food without their head covered will be punished severely." -Bhai Nand Lal Ji Gurbani Says: "With every hair they utter the Lord's Name, and every moment remember they their Lord" - SGGS, 1247 "With every hair, every hair of mine, I meditate on the Lord through the Guru"- SSGS, 443 "In every hair, Dwells the Lord, the annhilator of pride"- SSGS, 344 Hope this helps, Bhul Chuk Maaf Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!
  17. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! Just a question...what does it mean to be a AKJ?? I hear lots of people saying "yaa I wear a dastaar because I'm a AKJ", or " I took AKJ amrit." What does that mean?? How/Why are AKJ people different from the rest of the Amritdhari Sikhs??? Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

  19. Thank you all soo much for your posts...i e-mailed the person back...with really good arguements..so thank you all!!!!
  20. Well..this is what the person said to me.... Wahe Guru Ji ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru Ji ki Fateh Thank you for your opinion. But it is just that; an opinion. Unless you can point me to the sentence in our our great Guru Granth Sahib that the use of tables and chairs is totally forbidden in the langgar hall. Otherwise, it remains a cultural issue not to be confused with spirituality. Granted that tables and chairs were not used in the old days. But does it make it wrong to have them now? There were a lot of things that were not done on the old days that we do now. For example, we have the Guru Granth Sahib on CD, we use gas to cook in the langgar, mechanical dough mixers etc. Should we go back to the old ways simply because someone thinks that this is somehow a disrespect towards the Gurus? To me, our Gurus were very sensible and modern people. That's why we have a great and democratic religion that we can be proud of. I can imagine how irate it would have made people as opinioned as you to see the Gurus open the langgar to all castes and treat both genders equally and do all those things that were alien to the thinking of the times. To me, it is more disrespectful to our Gurus to be rigid in thought and follow the masses in mindless practices because that was exactly what they were against. And this is clearly spelled out in several places in our Guru Granth Sahib. Still, in the spirit of openess, I have forwarded your message to the people in charge at the Gurdwara in Penang. Perhaps they have a different opinion from mine. For your information, these table and chairs were introduced more than 50years ago. So, either we are far ahead of our times or you are stuck in the middle ages. All the sangat sit on the same simple humble wooded benches. Even the permier of the state is sits on the same bench when he visits. Dirty beggars and vagabonds sit on the same benches in the same laggar hall. All are treated equaly. So, we are following the Guru's teachings of equality. Furthermore, I have found that serving food to people sitted on the floor requires one to bend ones back dangerously low when carrying a heavy balti. Its a fact that these days people are not as fit as they used to be. Why do we want to subject our sevadars to the pain and hazards of bending low for long periods when the use of table and chairs can solve this problem. Our Gurus do not condon the practice of subjecting ourselves to pain as a means of achieving spirituality. Whoever changed the rule on tables and chairs does not seem to respect the many issues involved in this case. It has also caused much enmity in our otherwise united community. In my opinion,he should be taken to task by the sangat for behaving like the arrogant mahants who were thrown out of the Gurdwaras years ago. Remember, there are no priests in our religion who can dictate to the sangat unlike in the Christian and Hindu religions. There are only sevadars and these people should not behave like priests and make laws that are clearly against a great number of our sangat. The "high priests" at the Akal Takht should not use the Rehat Maryada to display their "strength". The question of serving meat in the langgar does not arise. Most people associate vegetarian food with simplicity and therefore spirituality. Even in these "modern" times this is common sense knowledge. Once again, thank you for your opinion. Do not take any comments in this mail personally. Let's have a rational look at the issue and not get carried away by all the rituals and cultural rules. Let's get back to the basics of the Guru's teachings. Just as importantly, let 9;s not disunite our people with hyper opinioned thinking. ...... I still dont agree with him...but what do I say to that????
  21. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Wahgeguru Ji Ki Fateh! I have a question about having tables and chairs in the Gurdwara. I know lots of people are against it...yet lots of ppl are for it as well...I was having a discussion about it with someone, and I told them I dont agree with it, and explained my reasons. They put up a really good arguement...and well...I didnt really know how to defend myself...so... Is it okay to have tables and chairs in the Gurdwara??...If not...why??!!!! :T: Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Waheguru Ji Kee Fateh!!
