BHANGRA MELA

Guru Nank school in hayes is having a summer mela

www.schoolmela.com

what are these people trying to teach our children, that bhagra parties are a good thing, all in the name of Guru Nanak ????

Have you seen the adverts for this event. They emphasise at the end NO ALCOHOL. The organisers need a clip round the ear, unless of cause the singers are being going to be singing dharmi songs. Hans Raj, Shinda etc are due to perform. I doubt Mona Singh etc are going to be doing dharmi numbers.

This only gets better. They have Dhol Blasters booked. If the Dhol Blasters web site is correct then they are linked with Gurcharan Mall who was happily performing at a naraqthari function not too long back. "www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?showtopic=10001&hl=" (remove " ").

Is this school only teaches children about Sikh dharam? Or is this school like the ordinary school of UK Education system.

If its only reserved for sikh dharam then the function is wrong. But if it's just like any other ordinary school then i see no problem of school holding cultural events.

i don't really have a problem with the mela, it isnt really promoting anything bad, just music and a nice day out for students and their families. I went to Guru Nanak school for 6th form, and i attended many relgious events there and it was nice to have a cultural event to go to, it made a nice change.

I think it's important to give the students variety in what they see. A bit of light hearted fun does not take anything away from the school.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

This is just blatant stupidity. Whats the School got to do with such melas? The reason why the poster might have to state that no alocohol allowed is because what these singers promote is a Punjabi Culture that has be totally overtaken by Drinking and Lads! They arent promoting anything else. The Sikh School know this but out of complete stupidity the wish to organise this event.

Why can they organise a Sports Day, a childrens kirtan, a boot sale for God sake!!! There are many other ways to raise money. Baba Amar Singh should think twice, did Baba Nand Singh organise bhangra melas to build Nanaksar Jagron?? Did Baba Attar Singh prefer to do a Bhangra Mela to build Baru Sahib Academy??

The Hayes School has no faith in Guruji. They dont believe that Guruji will provide the money they need so the will go out and get it any way possible, even if that means bypassing promotion of Sikhi for a bunch of famous Bhangra Singers!!

Practice what you preach, only then will a Sikh School benefit the Community. The SOLE aim of the School is Sikhi promotion!!! Or is it??

I don't understand, whas wrong with partaking in clean culture?

It confuses the youth We have Sikh religion on one side and the punjabi culture on the other.

Would you see bhangra/quali mela at a muslim madrasa? No, there are plenty of other things that would entertain the children! Kirtan/sports/gatka etc etc

A general question.

Do younger sikhs who are not amarti associate bhangra music as an identity as being a sikh?

Although they may not go to gurdwara as often as they should but they feel by participating with the bhangra culture, be it gigs etc, they are still part of the sikh hertitage.

When I was at University some 10 years ago in Manchester gigs were a way that sikhs got together (not amartis), The Punjabi society then was to get students to go to Gurdwara as much as possible, which we students then did do. Also the other adgenda was to get students to associate as much as possible. The way forward here was to arrange as many bhangra gigs as possible.

It seems as 10 years on, today sikhs are more into the religion than to participate in gigs etc with alcohol.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
